Rad Mobile may have been technologically superior, but honestly it’s a much less fun game to play (soundtrack is also kinda forgettable). I’ll take Power Drift any day!
I haven't done them all yet, but I challenged myself to do arrangements of all the songs in this soundtrack, one way or another. What makes it so tricky for me, yet proves why the whole soundtrack is beyond amazing, is the use of syncopation and offbeat emphasis in the music. So many first notes in each phrase actually begin on the "and" of beat 4.
This is it !! Thank you so much ! I have also learn that hiroshi kawaguchi is also known as "Hiroshi Miyauchi". Great musician (Out run, space harrier and even dynamite dux have great musics)
I never realized until now that the sound chip used is basically a YM2612 (MD/GEN) with a couple more channels for samples and FM. Edit: The PCM chip they used along with the YM2151 chip actually had several more channels, however you can split the PCM channel on MD in software and/or combine some samples on one channel to get pretty close, and not all of them are used here.
Studying the vgm files some more after that comment, some of the leads are samples in this game (and the samples are higher quality than on YM2612), but the FM synth is still 4op FM. There are only some minor differences in effects you can apply to an insrument which affects the timbre a bit but I'm pretty sure aren't used here. The reverb, IIRC, on leads is often done with two channels playing the same thing while stereo panned and slightly detuned for a chorus effect, then a third channel playing with some delay and lower volume for an echo effect. Having more channels let them do this more easily with the YM2151 chip.
Actually this upload might be a soundtrack release as it sounds a bit filtered and sounds like it might have a little bit of reverb added. vgmrips net lets you listen to the vgm files directly, though it is emulation so I'm not sure which is more accurate to the real arcade machine.
Not true. The Sega Y Board that this game ran on used the following sound chips: Yamaha YM2151 - 4 MHz, FM synthesis, 8 FM channels SegaPCM (315-5218) - 4 MHz, PCM sampling, 16 PCM channels, 12-bit audio, 31.25 kHz sampling rate This is significantly more advanced than the Mega Drive's YM2612, which only had 6 FM channels, only one of which could be converted into a PCM channel.
You gotta love finding more good old game soundtracks you never heard of that still sound so fucking good in this day n age. Glad I accidentally bumped into this song.
The producer who made the Rin remake is called Hiro and they’ve made other covers of older Sega songs too! They’ve done After Burner and Magical Sound Shower which are both in Project Diva, I’d check them out they’re good 😊

I FINALLY FOUND THIS DAMN SONG
How have I never heard this amazing track before? This game looks amazing for a 1988 racer.

Heard this first in Fist of the North Star Lost paradise. Its such a catchy theme. It almost sounds like a megaman song
SEGA SOUND TEAM FTW!
This is it !! Thank you so much ! I have also learn that hiroshi kawaguchi is also known as "Hiroshi Miyauchi". Great musician (Out run, space harrier and even dynamite dux have great musics)

not more sound channels on chips, it was actually more chips as in 2 or 3 on boards.
Wrong.

Kagamine Rin, a japanese vocaloid, made a special version to this song where she sings but the sound to the song isn't too retro as it is now.
Rin! I actually heard that one first and someone in the comments brought me here. I like both versions honestly.
Minecast Productions (MCP) yes both versions are very good. it's nice to see that vocaloid can make even old video game music cool
Silver akemi
Yep!
Now there just needs to be a Vocaloid version of music from Panzer Dragoon, Ecco the Dolphin, or NiGHTS into Dreams and we'll be in business.
This and Meiko's version of afterburner are both great

The song title is actually called Like The Wind too ....go figure

Things are coming up, as they say… “Milhouse”
Would have loved to hear the 32X take this on like Afterburner.
Genesis32X was made for this kind of music. No redbook needed. All chip, like the Arcade and not like Saturn.

This has Street Fighter II staff roll theme vibes, although it actually predates it.
Many arranges exist, but I am sure that the original is the best.
