Thank you for your great review. The Ultimate64 does not have a frame buffer. The actual lag is near zero. This is why you do not measure any difference between S-Video and HDMI output. The lag you are measuring is actually coming from your LCD screen itself. ;-)
Hi Gideon, thank you very much for the feedback :) Yes, the lag is coming from the display, therefore it's the same for the MK2 as well. I think I forgot to mention this. Anyway, I very much enjoy the board and I'm pretty sure I haven't even covered half of all the features yet.
It's great to find another authentic 'Sid Chip sound' enthusiast - Nothing less then playing C64 music and games on a real C64 Sid chip will suffice for me.
Yes, indeed. Although, I tend to use more and more replacements like the FPGASID or the ArmSID, just for casual usage I like to preserve the originals, we won't get any new anymore :)
Great video! I have to agree about the "power button", but that can be solved some what, by using a 3D printed mount. It really does cut down the wobble. Your viewers might like to see it actually mounted in a breadbin and C64C (the type that needs mounts for the keyboard) case. With mine, I have 3D printed stands for the keyboard and the side power / button / joystick ports. Please show off the telnet/ftp functions of the U64. I'm looking forward for the userport to be functional so I can use my wifimodem with screen again. I know there's talk of the internal wifi to be used as a modem one day, but I like having a screen.
@@kduhtdkzrt I'd check the Facebook group if I were you. There's a few different ideas on solving the problem. I then downloaded the ready made 3D files, and uploaded them to a 3D printing service.
Thank you for the feedback and the info. Putting the board into a case will be the next step when I have done most of the on-board tests. I guess I will get such 3D printed parts as well. Telnet and FTP is planned too, I just need to get a Lan cable to my desk since I use Wifi only actually. I have prepared an user port adapter by myself too, will be covered soon.
I've been watching your video as I troubleshoot an issue with SwinSIDs in my setup. The SID addressing is relevant when using applications such as MMSIAH. MSSIAH expects the 2nd SID to be at address $DE00.
I received my Ultimate64 board yesterday and I was hoping to find an option to set the aspect ratio to 4:3 instead of viewing everything stretched on my 16:9 monitor. Does anyone know if such an option exists or if it might be planned for future firmware updates? Thank you for taking the time to record all your thoughts and tests of this very exciting project!
Thank you very much for your kind comment :) The output of the Ultimate64 is a standard 4:3 picture but a lot of monitors/tv sets do not scale while maintaining the aspect ratio. This can't be solved by a firmware upgrade on the Ultimate64 side, unfortunately. I guess HDMI should transfer the information about the aspect ratio but if this is ignored on the display side then it won't help. It would be really great if the Ultimate64 could output a full HD picture with the C64 pic embedded with the correct ratio.
The mouse/paddles are working independently from the SID on the Ultimate64, basically, it is done by the board itself and it works very good, better than every real SID it could do. It's very similar to the FPGASID, no shivering nor shuttering, very smooth motion.
@@c64customs Thank you for clearing that up. One more question: does Ultimate64 has a "printer emulation" feature? It exists in 1541 Ultimate-II+, but I haven't noticed it in any of the menus in this video (or any other video or screenshot on the web).
Great review. I have received my Ultimate64 and love it. Can you tell me what adapter/board is plugged into the joystick ports to allow you to use what appears to be a wireless controller?

What is that little board sitting on the Ultimate-64's joystick ports? Does it allow to use digital USB game controllers (such as the TheC64 Joystick) to be used?
The quality of the output is hard to compare since the Ultimate64 is not using a normal VICII which influence the video signal the most. In my opinion, the Ultimate64 is superior to other boards although the MKII and modded Commodore aren't bad either.

What an excellent review (and thanks for checking the Tapuino)!
Thank you very much!
I just ordered one. I can’t wait for it!
I bet you'll love it :)
Thanks for your comprehensive review and giving your thoughts about how it compares with the MK2. What is the primary reason you use JiffyDos?
Mostly the fast loader which works very well with many games and demos and if not it isn't interfering with soft fast loaders most of the time.
Nice review and comparison video. Very interesting info here:)

Is it possible to use USB joystick with the ultimate64?
Unfortunately, not yet. Perhaps later with an updated firmware.
Thanks for the quick reply and excellent review!
I hope support for USB controllers is added. I'd love to try out an Xbox 360 controller with the Ultimate64!
