I love the showing a characters tragic backstory through a series of recorded tapes where in each one you see their deteriorating mental and physical health trope. This is the third time I’ve seen it and it is never not fucked up.
i adore chujin's sprites in his tapes. so much emotion conveyed through only body language. i especially love how his hair is visibly frazzled in the later tapes, it's such good visual storytelling

You're not here to recieve a gift, nor have you been called here by the individual you assume, although you have indeed been called. You have all been called here, into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune. A labirynth with no exit, a maze with no prize. You don't even realize that you are trapped. Your lust for blood has driven you in endless circles, chasing the cries of children in some unseen chamber always seeming so near, yet somehow out of reach. But you will never find them, none of you will. This is where your story ends. And then, what became of you? I should have known you wouldn't be contempt to just disappear, not my daughter. I couldn't save you then, so let me save you now. End Communication.
When I heard that AXIS had killed the child, I had a sudden panic attack. It scared me to think that a murderer was following us in the Steamworks. Seriously, that is a genuineley horrifying thing.
How Axis saw it: "It's a shame I was forced to neutralize that human" How it actually happened: Chujin "Alright Axis, I need you to capture a human that's loose in snowdin and bring them back to me" Axis "BLOW THE HUMAN'S BRAIN OUT, UNDERSTOOD" Chujin "Wait, what? No!"
@@thomasdevlin5825 How I'd interpret it: So, Axis has certain criteria for how threating someone is, as we can see from his encounters in the Neutral and Pacifist routes where he views Clover (and Ceroba) as not threatening enough to be killed. In the Genocide route, the threat level of Clover is a 10, which is one where the threat is immediately terminated. In the Genocide run after Clover shoots him, he perceives clover as threat level 9999999 which causes fear. With that being said, my interpretation is that Intergrity somehow had a threat level of 10, possibly due to killing and/or injuring monsters in front of Axis. Now there are a few holes in this theory, such as Axis not immediately terminating Clover after Clover enters Steamworks on a Neutral or an aborted Genocide (where Ceroba isn't fought) route, or Axis somehow knowing about what Clover did in the Genocide route, especially when the steamworks have been abandoned for years at this point.
It’s even worse because Axis looks like he has no remorse for his actions unless it’s a genocide route. He didn’t even care that his systems saw you as not a threat, he purposely got around his system just so he could harm you, a child that had only been running away from him at this point. Sure you did stuff to Axis but it was in the name of self defense. He purposely escalates situations so he’s justified in harming you and Ceroba
Like up until now you’ve faced a mentally challenged ruins hermit who was confirmed to have had his shit kicked by a human before, an incompetent royal guard, a cowboy larper experiencing a mental breakdown And suddenly now you’re facing off against a robot who has killed a human child, now locking the doors and setting his eyes on you
If I ever run a D&D campaign and the player characters had plenty of oppurtunity to stop the main villain, but just didn't pick up the red flags, I'll play this at the grand reveal.

The fact that this plays when Chujin interrupts Martlet during the flashback in the Zenith Martlet fight, because he was telling her nothing but the truth.
…holy shit Chujin’s whole mindset of humans coming from his own bias and experiences (lacking any proof of good humans or good interactions), now being entirely proven right by clover in that route
I love how Chujin's backstory was slowly creeping up on the narrative as we moved forward and by the time we reached the tapes I was amazed and in the same time finally realized Ceroba wasn't gonna be just some side character...and what you know we're at the pascifist boss fight
"This is Chujin... I am... at a loss for where to start. There's a lot to say... I suppose I'll start at the beginning... It started when an alien device did what it did."
I love how the theme escalates and adds more and more piano, to show how Chujin's condition become worse in every next log. At the and, when final piano part starts playing, it always reminds me of Jevil's theme - circus. It's final part sounds definitely like circus, but without circus motives and with more melancholic piano. Absolutely genius soundtrack

Not sure if this is intentional, but if this is, DAMN they were clever. I ended up translating Chujin's name since it sounded Chinese. Since kitsunes (in this case, fox spirits) also appear in Chinese mythology, it wouldn't be far off to translate it to Chinese. Turns out, it gave out a word: "Exhaust" In one way, this can relate to his experience as a Steamworks engineer, as there's likely going to be exhaust pipes in the Steamworks. Steam and all; gonna need pipes to redirect all of it. In another way, it could also be interpreted as tiredness; in this case, through "exhausting" of resources. This also reflects his deteriorating options and resources (such as his job); his main resource being TIME. With his life was running out from Kanako, he told Ceroba to carry out his final wish to continue his soul research and... the rest was history.
It's not just Kanako; he could've easily grown old and seen her reach adulthood if it were just that. In large part, it's the experiments he conducted on himself that shortened his life; he wore out his own body, damaged his own SOUL, in pursuit of his ambition.
everybody talks about ceroba's secret room and for good reason, but this song playing halfway through z martlet was genuinely haunting. chujin might be dead, but he haunts every inch of the game.
Great, i can't unhear it now. I just imagine this plays where either the witness or the accused just doing the biggest lore drop that ties in to the real murderer.
I just noticed i have no idea if this is a coincidence or not but the leitmotif that plays half way through the song/near the end sounds like "alphys" from undertale

You know, there's been many characters, and I can't really pick a favorite between the main people, so it's weird that for me that I feel like Chujin is easily the most interesting and mysterious. Somehow I can't get a grasp of him. His death, his creations and rsearch set so many things in motion. This plays with my favourite concept of "this character is no longer with us, but he moves the story in unspeakable ways." And Chujin is the embodiment of that. He is beautifully orchestrated and the biggest thing about him is that...I can not for the love of me grasp whether he is a positive or negative character. He has done terrible things and seems like he does not experience even a small bit of guilt about it. Yet he did so much for the monsterkind too. This game likes to play a lot with the "Gray Area" of morals and justice (doing what is right), prime examples being Ceroba, Clover and even Martlet, but I feel like the very embodiment of that concept in the game is actually Chujin.
Yeah, lol. I would guess that comes down to how when you do science, you have the possibility to cause massive effects in the world. Sure, a soldier may do a lot of killing, but they don't have that massive overarching power that a skilled scientist has. And of course, we only find a lot out about the interesting scientists, and the interesting scientists usually are the ones that made large discoveries. So it is a combination of the nature of the work and the nature of storytelling that comes together resulting in most fictional scientists being people of the greater good. It might also have something to do with how calculating and logical a lot of scientists are, making them more willing to do things that they believe are good for all but hurt a few. However, I will note Chujin didn't really do much inherently wrong. Most of the harm he caused was on accident, or just straight-up not him. He was unclear with AXIS about what to do with the human, which led to their death, but that was only partially his fault, and even if he intentionally killed them, that would still, in my opinion, have been the right thing to do, seeing as they were murdering monsters. He SPECIFICALLY told Ceroba NOT to test anything on Kanako, which she promptly ignored, why I have no clue, maybe she was over-confident and thought it was sure to work. But other than that, he didn't do much that could even be interpreted as evil. Maybe stupid, such as experimenting on himself, but not evil. One could interpret his instructions to obtain the soul of the next human to fall down as evil, but his only experience with humans was that they were evil and trying to hurt monsters. So, in summery, he didn't really do anything evil, morally dubious or stupid at worst.
Gaster fell into his own creation. Alphys made one fatal mistake that cost the lives of those who had fallen. Chujin had been consumed by hate, and fell into a hell he had made. His forgotten essence. Her nervous lies. His final wish.
Everyone talks about the scene in Pacifist, but nobody talks about that flashback cutscene in Genocide. One of the most impactful and tragic (if you think deeply about it) scenes in the entire game, as Martlet genuinely believed she wouldn't encounter a human, let alone a very violent one.

The way I was expected to see deep and meaningful comments under my the most favourite soundtrack in the game, but instead I see a bunch of jokes about anime, backflips, apology videos and sans... This killed me... (In a good way, I laughed so hard)
I am commenting on every single song of the Undertale Yellow Soundtrack playlist! (Read this knowing I discovered, explored and played Deltarune (in 2021) before Undertale (in 2022), which to the current day of this comment I have only watched the entirety of, but not actually played. Hence why I assume that I like Deltarune more than Undertale, because it was personal and... new, in a way, but can still feel what I would call a "fake" nostalgia from Undertale despite that). I played Undertale Yellow one time. My playthrough went across from 10/12/2023 to 26/12/2023, during a total of 15-16 days. I played it, aimed for the best, and got True Pacifist. When I finish it, I tell Flowey to wait. And get off the computer for the day. Some days pass by, and I finally start watching a True Pacifist route on YT. Some days pass by again, and I gain the courage to watch the not-so-dark path, and then the truly dark path. Some time passes once again, and I finally watch the end offered by Flawed Pacifist. The static disappears. A silhouette appears, cloaked in shadow. Few features of them can be recognized. The reflection of their goggles shine through, brightly. "Greetings, this is Chujin." Oh...MAN! How am I gonna do this?! I am not prepared for this, at all! I... ...Y'know? Why don't I let the scene speak for itself? I am sure HE has a lot to say, a truth... to reveal... The first video tape serves as a test. Chujin has a lot to tell, and via this format, everything will be heard, loud and clear. Throughout these tapes, his predicaments shall be told, all of them. One day, him and Kanako visited Snowdin, eventually separating due to Kanako's curious nature. That would be a fateful day for this family, however. A hostile human had appeared and relentlessly started terrorizing the area, attacking Kanako's playmate, almost getting a hold of her, too. Fortunately, she was not injured, but the impact of this occurrence would reveal to be the starting point of the downward spiral that he would put himself into. Determined to change the course of the war between humans and monsters, he would set in stone his plan for the future, a future much brighter for the monsters. Things would not go so successful for the next steps. Left and right, his concerns for the state of monsterkind would result in nothing but more drawbacks. Kicked out of a golden opportunity to show the possibility of retaliation against the humans, more problems would arise if his close one knew. And so, when one door closes, a window is opened. That window would be the path. The path to a new plan, a plan of faith... or failure. Eventually, a solution would come. Boss Monsters would be the ultimate key. Beings with strong, persistent SOULs, capable of immortality if fertile. Even in few numbers, one would be capable of outdoing the capabilities of various humans. If a single human SOUL and a Boss Monster SOUL were to be combined, the result would come in a serum, whose essence would be powerful enough to give great power to any and all monsters if infused into them. The risks of this experiment are unknown, for now. As the only visible way to go about the circumstances, it can't be discarded until new results come to light. The future of this war is at stake. Desperate for immediate outcomes, the scientist would be his own test subject. A decision he would soon be eternally regretful of. Bearer of an unparalleled SOUL, the effects would rapidly propagate, showing themselves more each time the sun sets and rises again. Although, soon, it would not rise for him, not anymore. Given the constant failed attempts, someone else would have to carry on the experiment. It would be up to her, and only her, to hold and honor his legacy in her arms. She would watch attentively for the next human, a human, hopefully, with an unmatched, flawless goodwill. After that, the only component left, the Boss Monster SOUL. The two would be near one another. From one willing individual, anyone, anyone... besides her. Kanako will not be part of this. Kanako will have a good life, regardless of anything else. Kanako will be happy, in a new world. "That is my final wish." The screen cuts to endless static. Now, that's what I'm talking about! A proper, well-conceived, perfectly executed... Ladies and gentlemen, LE LORE DROP! This music, this moment, this everything! I wouldn't be surprised if this track was called, I don't know, "Apex (Reprise)" because this truly is the embodiment of an apex! Still, "Nothing but the Truth" is undeniably a masterful title. It's all thrown to you in one go, no stuttering. Suspicions and assumptions could have already been floating around, but when the truth is revealed like this, with barely any preparation, using only and ONLY the feeling of uncertainty, the feeling of "something is about to happen, something big, but you have nothing on it, nothing can prepare you for it"... it's overwhelming, intentionally too much to make you question all that has and can still happen. It's upfront, direct, and any expectation couldn't do it justice. It's more than just "the truth", it's nothing BUT the truth, because something as grand as this, can't simply be put into other words like some throwaway fairytale. It's a life-changing reveal. I can't imagine Clover's reaction to seeing all of this, to see that someone who befriended them, someone who agreed to help them in exchange for their help too... was nothing that they showed to be. Or at least, someone whose motives were way darker than what they were told to be. Even though I felt a bit lost at that moment, that doesn't mean I wasn't in awe when observing this play out. It was frightful, abysmal to watch, chilling. Again, it's not even about the subversion of expectation, because very few indicators were out there to be seen and analised. It's purely shocking to behold all of it in such a short amount of time. I just sat there, viewing it, unsure of what to think, as the information given felt totally unbelievable and made-up, but right and sensible to some extent. It lines up. Unfortunately, that's not at all a good sign. And all of this is fundamentally perfected by the music and how gorgeously convenient it is for the visual representation of a "plot twist". The progression of the song is slow. A sequence of four notes grows louder from the shadows. Those of which, will repeat for a good while. Not in silence though, a windy background ambiance makes it company. The four notes repeat again and again, until slight modifications start to appear in them, momentarily distancing from their original sound. Suddenly, a growing choir joins in, together with short piano sequences in the back. The chilling choir grows louder and louder, the piano alters its notes at many moments. As the crescendo rises, a familiar set of notes vibrates through. The Ketsukane's motif. It plays dramatically, as if it had a life of its own. Not satisfied yet, the long motif plays once again. Even more dramatically, more severely, more tragically. The choir extends, the piano keys play higher than ever, until... ...The four notes reappear, now lonely. They repeat, fading out of sight and hearing, disappearing into the darkness. After the consuming silence, they return, repeating, one after another. I believe this track to be a true work of art. The echoing choir is menacing, it sings to no end, the owner of the creeping chills I get when listening to this. The constant four-note sequence can be seen as unusual right from the beginning, masterfullly set up throughout the entire piece. The reoccurring intercalation between high and low points in the song keeps your attention locked in it, it's vicious, and the vibe of unsettledness looms over, at all times. The recognizable melody of the Ketsukane's fateful story is downright stunning to hear, without a doubt, the most emotional, tragic, and even scary iteration of this motif ever heard to date. Even the beginning and the end of the track resulting in identical ambiance, but meaning so different things: at the beginning, feeling uncertain and anxious, and at the end, feeling defeated in fearful awe. The cyclical relation between the before and the after of the climax of the song, driving me to note the similarities the two share, leads to the thought of "what now...?". Well, simply put... There is no going back. The cold and bold truth has been revealed and is already in the hands of those who shouldn't know it. Time is ticking.
"Nothing but the Truth" speaks for itself. It feels much more than just a song, an emotional/psychological test is what it seems like, when paired with the viewing of those tapes. And, if you really just stretch it down to the song itself, it is one that you have to FEEL more than listen to or talk about to really comprehend it. That seems to be the reason why I think I didn't particularly express myself as much as I would like to about this magnificent piece. The strong feelings it emits on me mean much more than what I can put into words, really (that might also be why the story-telling portion at the beginning turned out to be a very fitting way to tell the tale, in my eyes at least). The last line sticks in Clover and Martlet's mind. A few seconds in silence, still daydreaming of what they witnessed, the two snap upon Martlet's shout to zip out of the house. Just out of the house, the Feisty Four patiently wait for input on the situation. Martlet gives out the horrible news, making note of the plan that Ceroba had to gather Clover and Kanako's SOUL. Their confused and worried reaction prompts a clear explanation to Martlet of the previous events she still wasn't aware, which was that Kanako went sent to the Lab soon after she fell down, information that leaves Martlet justifiably surprised. However, she doesn't lower her guard and quickly interrogates Ed about Ceroba's current location, to which he protests, arguing that taking Clover too close to her would be the worst option. His statement is backed up by Mooch, who agrees that the hatted human should stay safe at the Wild East, away from Ceroba's reach. Martlet impatiently reinforces that the kitsune won't be successful in her twisted objective. She also points out that the royal guard is probably already aware of the human presence, given all of the fuss that the Wild East is known to be, which would prompt them to raid the village at any given moment and easily get Clover in their hands. Ed proves to have an impressive resistance against the bird's idea, hesitant to trust it. Even more impatient, Martlet asks directly to Clover about the wanted destination, and so they consider what they saw in Hotland, the royal Lab. Ed's complaints are weared down by Ace, who advises that Clover might just be the key to finish this conflict for good. After some deliberation, Ed finally agrees with the plan, recommending a quick path to Hotland through the Steamworks. Ace gives a piece of advice, to ask the residents of the area, given that the CORE adn its surroundings are pretty crowded. Moray tries to go for a positive approach and offers the help of the gang on the issue, but the bird guard insists on their stay, fundamental to keeping the town safe and sound. They obey the authority, and Martlet gives a final farewell to the Feisty Four... as well as a reminder of the application of their deliberately helpful method of prolonged jail keeping on her. Moray and Mooch jokingly comment on the fun time they had, regardless of the present circumstances. Before flying up in the air to the speed of an arrow shot from a bow, Martlet lets Clover know to meet her in the UG Apatments facility. After the bird takes her leave, only the feisties and the young gunslinger remain. The four individually wave a momentary goodbye to the deputy. Ed wishes them good luck on the mission. Moray reminds them of all the adventures they'll still live together. Mooch assures that there will always be a place for them in the Feisty Six's official nap time. Ace advises them to be keen when the moment comes. "See ya later... Deputy", consents Ed, before all of them leave the front of the house, back to their home town. At the distance, Moray waves happily to Clover. The proud deputy nods their head, in respect to their true friends. Soon after the gang's leave, Clover too starts to walk down the path out of the house's domain, when suddenly... ...Flowey appears right behind them, cheering in his high-pitched accent, as always. Pranking Clover with his past right statements, they are surprised to see that Flowey isn't pushing them aside their current path to meet Martlet and encounter Ceroba. In fact, he incentivizes the human to confront the situation head to head, successfully, as they've always been able to with the help of their best friend! This unusual agreement and positivism doesn't bother Clover too much, as they are too focused on the objective, as well as a bit lost regarding what they watched in that hidden basement. Flowey wishes, too, that Clover can and will succeed, before going underground mode. Thankfully, Flowey's apparition made Clover realized they didn't check what was on the northwest way of the house. Given their ample but also slowly-shrinking break time, they don't see the point of not doing it. Running up the sandy corridor, they notice the light going dimmer and dimmer. Finally reaching it... ... a grave stands in their way. Going up to it, it is carved "Chujin Ketsukane. The best of us.". Clover admires the tombstone, placed front and center in a lushful landscape where the glowing stone that enlightens the Dunes doesn't shine as bright, just unlike his daughter's bed. Most of the light comes from the candles spread around. A sakura tree grows tall, almost reaching the top of the grave. The young human looks of into the infinite horizon. Though hard to see the similarities, Clover gets nostalgic of their time in Snowdin, the Honeydew Resort, specifically. A feeling of dismay invades their inner being. Could they really make a difference? Are they really capable of changing Ceroba's heart, and push her into the right track...? ... They remember their journey too, their closest friends too. Dalv, Decibat, The Shufflers, Martlet, Starlo and the Feisty Four, Guardener, Axis... Clover deeply reflects on the importance they on them. They realize that, often times, they would get lost in their mission, lost in the trials and tumbles they've endured, in the friends they made along the adventure. After a prolonged stay near Chujin's grave, a stay way more thoughtful than they could've predicted initially. First Ceroba, then after, the missing humans. The plan is set. Clover hops back on their feet, taking a deep breath before leaving the private graveyard. No looking back. Instead of using the laundry chute in the Steamworks or the shipping service of the mail whale to get to Hotland quicker, Clover decides to go on foot. Gives more time for personal reflection.

@@umbreonmaster8921 Correct.
Literally my first thought when listening to this in the post LOL
Beautiful
When I heard that AXIS had killed the child, I had a sudden panic attack. It scared me to think that a murderer was following us in the Steamworks. Seriously, that is a genuineley horrifying thing.
Agree. Such a cool reality check
How Axis saw it: "It's a shame I was forced to neutralize that human"
How it actually happened: Chujin "Alright Axis, I need you to capture a human that's loose in snowdin and bring them back to me"
Axis "BLOW THE HUMAN'S BRAIN OUT, UNDERSTOOD"
Chujin "Wait, what? No!"
@@thomasdevlin5825 How I'd interpret it:
So, Axis has certain criteria for how threating someone is, as we can see from his encounters in the Neutral and Pacifist routes where he views Clover (and Ceroba) as not threatening enough to be killed.
Like up until now you’ve faced a mentally challenged ruins hermit who was confirmed to have had his shit kicked by a human before, an incompetent royal guard, a cowboy larper experiencing a mental breakdown
And suddenly now you’re facing off against a robot who has killed a human child, now locking the doors and setting his eyes on you
If I ever run a D&D campaign and the player characters had plenty of oppurtunity to stop the main villain, but just didn't pick up the red flags, I'll play this at the grand reveal.

Ceroba: "Okay." *Uses it on Kanako*

Ah. Ceroba. Welcome to the afterlife. We have much to discuss. Specifically... I you NOT to test the serum on our daughter. Not. As in, 'this is something you should avoid doing at all costs.'
But you did it anyway.

Well, till death do us part, so no divorce needed!
Serum... Use... Daughter
Not sure if this is intentional, but if this is, DAMN they were clever.
I ended up translating Chujin's name since it sounded Chinese. Since kitsunes (in this case, fox spirits) also appear in Chinese mythology, it wouldn't be far off to translate it to Chinese.
Turns out, it gave out a word: "Exhaust"
In one way, this can relate to his experience as a Steamworks engineer, as there's likely going to be exhaust pipes in the Steamworks.

“This is Chujin.”

Scientists have a tendency to be people of the "greater good", don't they?
Well once you get the knowledge, you can help more people, and that can make you a bit more ambitious until it snowballs

A labyrinth of misfortune,
A maze with no prize.
Favourite ost, peace of masterpiece

"Greetings, this is Chujin."
Oh...MAN!
"That is my final wish."
The screen cuts to endless static.

Connection terminated. I'm sorry to interrupt you, Ceroba, if you still even remember that name, But I'm afraid you've been misinformed. You are not here to receive a gift, nor have you been called here by the individual you assume, although, you have indeed been called. You have all been called here, into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune. A labyrinth with no exit, a maze with no prize. You don't even realize that you are trapped. Your lust for blood has driven you in endless circles, chasing the cries of children in some unseen chamber, always seeming so near, yet somehow out of reach, but you will never find them. None of you will. This is where your story ends. And to you, my brave volunteer, who somehow found this job listing not intended for you, although there was a way out planned for you, I have a feeling that's not what you want. I have a feeling that you are right where you want to be. I am remaining as well. I am nearby. This place will not be remembered, and the memory of everything that started this can finally begin to fade away. As the agony of every tragedy should. And to you monsters trapped in the corridors, be still and give up your spirits. They don't belong to you. For most of you, I believe there is peace and perhaps more waiting for you after the smoke clears. Although, for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole, so don't keep the devil waiting, old friend. My daughter, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It's in your nature to protect the innocent. I'm sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours, and then, what became of you. I should have known you wouldn't be content to disappear, not my daughter. I couldn't save you then, so let me save you now. It's time to rest - for you, and for those you have carried in your arms. This ends for all of us. End communication.
