The Founders assumed only men of honor would take a break from their REAL job to spend 6 years serving their Country as a Representative for their State. The problem is unanimous consent, where all members of that particular chamber of Congress agree to allow a vote on the floor. If a member withholds unanimous consent the matter has to be voted on in regular order, which in the Senate requires 60 votes to avoid a filibuster. I believe that we should have to have actual filibusters, where the person or persons filibustering have to actually speak rather than just say, "We can't get to 60 votes". Usually, there is enough pressure brought to bear on the member of Congress who is withholding unanimous consent to make him give in within a couple of days.

Also a Canadian, but as I understand it, the principle behind it is to give an individual the power to put senate approvals on hold for further discussion. Historically, this was done for individual promotions/appointments. Then, Tuberville came along and abused this power to hold everything up.

They are a rubber stamping but the votes must be unanimous. If not they have to do them individually which is what they did for the 3. So he is holding up the batches of 100 and the GOP is telling Schumer 'well, go individually!'

Lawrence, you should have named and shamed those Senators who voted against General Brown’s promotion, as you did for the other two. Also, those promotions are not just about the money: blocking them means that there are gaps in high level military management, decision making, and leadership. That potentially creates real risks to national security. Have Tuberville’s financial records, sponsorships, business dealings and social media been through a deep dive investigation?
It should not be allowed for one person in the Congress to stop any legislation on their own. It brings to mind Manchin and Sinema who alone stopped many bills and laws from passing in Congress. It should never be ok for one person to black mail Congress. They need to somehow fix this.
Manchin and Sinema were deciding votes and were Democrats who often voted with Republicans. That's different from this. Believe it or not, it is actually possible for one Senator to block things -- not because he is the deciding vote, but before a vote is even taken -- and even if he is in the extreme minority. EG ALL the officers you referred to is just the tip of the iceberg bc all the slots they vacated have to be filled by their underlings right on down through the ranks. It may just be my years of working for attorneys speaking here, but i think tgis is a great opportunity for a class action lawsuit. Idk if that's possible but it darn well should be possible.
Also held up are the promotions of those who will be promoted into the positions vacated by those 300+ members of the armed forces awaiting Senate approval, when they finally do get approved. A whole chain of command moves up when someone is promoted. And each of those upward moves are accompanied by pay raises. I live in Canada, so something like this is completely foreign to me. I genuinely would love for someone to provide a brief explanation as to how it is possible for one man to have this kind of control/power over the entire US Military. Even as I type this, I find it unbelievable. Shouldn't there be a committee or group of some sort that makes decisions like this? Apologies for my ignorance. I sincerely want to be educated on this. With appreciation.
Also a Canadian, but as I understand it, the principle behind it is to give an individual the power to put senate approvals on hold for further discussion. Historically, this was done for individual promotions/appointments. Then, Tuberville came along and abused this power to hold everything up.
Our outdated Constitution needs a major overhaul.
@trishhunt4085 From another Canadian, it was explained to me that every year there are these promotions which are grouped in sessions of 100 to go faster. They are a rubber stamping but the votes must be unanimous. If not they have to do them individually which is what they did for the 3. So he is holding up the batches of 100 and the GOP is telling Schumer 'well, go individually!'

Lawrence, you should have named and shamed those Senators who voted against General Brown’s promotion, as you did for the other two. Also, those promotions are not just about the money: blocking them means that there are gaps in high level military management, decision making, and leadership. That potentially creates real risks to national security. Have Tuberville’s financial records, sponsorships, business dealings and social media been through a deep dive investigation?
I'd settle for a very detailed audit by the IRS.

It should not be allowed for one person in the Congress to stop any legislation on their own. It brings to mind Manchin and Sinema who alone stopped many bills and laws from passing in Congress. It should never be ok for one person to black mail Congress. They need to somehow fix this.
Manchin and Sinema were deciding votes and were Democrats who often voted with Republicans. That's different from this. Believe it or not, it is actually possible for one Senator to block things -- not because he is the deciding vote, but before a vote is even taken -- and even if he is in the extreme minority. It is appalling that Congressional rules allow this. I think we're the only country in the world whose legislative branch has that kind of ridiculous rule.
Edit: I looked this up. He's blocking these confirmations as a protest against the military's policy of allowing service women to go to any state for an abortion. What a JERK this guy is!

EG ALL the officers you referred to is just the tip of the iceberg bc all the slots they vacated have to be filled by their underlings right on down through the ranks. Additionally probably hundreds maybe thousands of lives were put on hold bc of the uncertainty of not only re permissions but also moving expenses, changing schools , landlords and real estate bids& closing. The disruption and expense are all immeasurable and uncalculatable. This from an old vet. I recommend you interview some current military personnel and check back for an update. I love your show. Thank you for being the voice of so many. The world is a better place bc you were here.

I would bring some of the female service members waiting for promotions to the Senate floor, and publicly call out Tuberville to have him explain to these women, to their face, why he's holding up their promotions, and their pay, and hurting their families. Women who have sacrificed for this country while he coached college football. Have him tell them to their face that his hold is not affecting them.
Maybe all 316 could call him daily to explain why their promotions are important and the impact on their families and the people under their command? I think a few days like this would go a long way in changing his mind. Maybe their wives could call and a few of their older kids? Maybe some rank-and-file servicepeople could call as well? This man is a coward at heart. Inundate him with calls, emails, letters, etc.

What is worse than what Tuberville did is that not one leader in their party put him in check.

Also held up are the promotions of those who will be promoted into the positions vacated by those 300+ members of the armed forces awaiting Senate approval, when they finally do get approved. A whole chain of command moves up when someone is promoted. And each of those upward moves are accompanied by pay raises. Tuberville is doing more to undermine and harm the US military than China could ever dream of doing. If the PLA isn’t paying him, it should.
Here is what the DOD should do: shut down every military base in Alabama, one at a time, until Senator Potato Town comes to his senses.
Of course, that solution would hurt many people in Alabama that aren't causing this problem. Most are low-income, and jobs are not exactly plentiful in Bama land.
