An additional nuance about the number 666 is that 777 was considered to be the "Perfect" number, or rather a number you would use to represent completion. This is why Christ is sometimes referenced to with the number "888", because he transcends what is "complete". 666, on the other hand, is inferior to the perfection of 777 and completely opposed to 888.

It's actually crazy how LITTLE was lost in translation. This is a fascinating topic and I love this video, but demons and angels are not exactly major theological concepts when it comes to salvation and the rest of Christian doctrine. I'm not saying they're not important, but it's not a matter of salvation to understand the nature of a demon or an angel. So the fact that the vast majority of the text has been translated in a way that keeps its meaning is truly remarkable.
I must say, your attention to detail and clarity of the context of theses texts is so refreshing! It is so frustrating as a "Christian" to speak with other "Christians" that have no clue what they actually think they believe. Sharing your videos with some friends has really helped open some eyes to the understanding needed to truly decide in the christian faith!
Amen to that, it’s even more galling when I talk with local Christians about Christian history and they know nothing about it, nor the saints for that matter. I mean to their credit when I start speaking of the Saints like Augustine, Moses the Black, or George they’re quite into it, but it still bothers me that they’ve never been exposed to any of it.
I went to Catholic school for 9 years and Lutheran for 1...the latter was preschool so...One priest we had cycle through was named Father Hyram or Hiram, it's been 28-30 years, but, while at the Vatican, he was an official exorcist. He had quite a few stories and one picture. I believed him, he had no reason to lie and was very matter of fact when we asked him about it. In fact, we were shocked to receive the answers we did!! The pastor, Father Schmidt, was none to happy about his answers and told us to disregard anything Hyram said. Therefore, I took it all as truth!!

Try Dr Jordan Petersons biblical lectures, he dives into the deep meanings behind the words. Its the best and most thrilling version I've ever heard. I love learning about the linguistics and etymology behind mythological beings. I find it fascinating that in an abundant amount of examples, it seems that we are looking predominantly at job titles more so than characters. A really good book on demons is _The Spirit of the Rainforest,_ it's about the Yanomamo, one of the last Amazonian tribes to encounter the western world and is narrated by one of their shamans. They used to take a natural hallucinogenic and talk to spirits that gave them actionable intelligence on rival tribes, as well as fool them into thinking they had more power than they really did in the physical world. It's also a very brutal book because the shaman isn't shy about graphic details. A very fascinating look into the culture of a tribal society constantly faced with constant war and starvation. You can also watch interviews on YT with Chief Shoefoot, who was one of the other shamans in the tribe.

i have this struggle even today in my attempts to communicate the subtle meanings between Portuguese and English. There are meanings that can only be understood if you known the culture and the original meaning communicated that can't be literally translated. A simple example is the common cultural example of someone saying "diga" , a Portuguese person knows that it is shorthand hand for "tell me how I can help", but the word translates to just "speak".
There is a similar expression in Italian "Mi dica" literally means " tell me about it" but it is also used like the Portuguese expression to say " How can I help?"
Hey dude, thanks for the video. At 12:36 - no, this is not Lilith. It is more likely Ereshkigal or Ishtar (2 sisters goddesses and the first is goddess of underworld, the second is of beauty among other things). But it is most likely Ereshkigal. Excellent video! Michael Heiser is my favourite Christian scholars on this subject. He died of cancer recently, but he spent his academic career studying what the Bible and ancient culture said about demons, and he pieced together a magnificent lecture series (and book) entitled "the Unseen Realm." I would absolutely recommend Dr. Heiser to anyone interested in diving deeper into exploring what Metatron brilliantly laid out here.
Second the recommendation for Dr. Heiser. I also recommend the work of Dr. John Walton, author of "The Lost World of Genesis", "The Lost World of Adam and Eve", and others. (For content on TH-cam, i also recommend @InspiringPhilosophy)
Yeah Dr. Heiser confirmed a lot of my, I guess suspicions about the spiritual realm. It always seemed to me there was the Godhead, and various levels of angels, but that there was this third grouping alluded to that weren't God (father, son, or Holy Spirit) or angels in between them. Well, "Angel" just means "messenger" which could be a lot of things and the lightbulb went off when he started talking about Deuteronomy and the "sons of God" that were apportioned to the nations surrounding Israel after Babel. A HA! There's my third group. And I think he is spot-on identifying "Demons" as the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim. And from what Dr, Heiser said he believed- the fight between Lucifer and Michael and their angels is a future event that hasn't happened yet. So Lucifer doesn't even have actual angels yet- just the restless spirits of giants who need to possess someone to affect the physical world. "Angels" can have physical bodies at will. If all that is true, the end-times are going to be LIT! :D
@prader1330 Dr. Heiser was awesome. I've watched all his videos and own his books. I think Revelation's 4th and 5th Trumpets are interesting. Abbadon is possibly Samyaza or Azazel from the Book of Enoch. The creatures that fly out sound like hordes of Manticore and Chimera, which Enoch says the fallen ones were mixing their essence with animals to create abominations, in addition to Nephilim. 🤯
I'm currently reading The Unseen Relm. There's another author that follows the same line of thinking that writes both fiction and nonfiction that I highly recommend, Brian Godawa. His books, Chronicles of The Nephilim, are my favorite historical fantasy series. He even goes into the history of the region and people at the time the books are set. His book on Psalm 82 is good too. Edited for grammar.
I have a master degree in linguistics and postgrad studies in neurolinguistics. I heard just the beginning and..I am exploding with joy ! Finally, I hear sense. I feel sick when people try to interpret a text, written long time ago, according to the modern world. With translations it is even worse. With a friend I watched a movie, based on a real story, that happened over a century ago. It was about the value of the family, friendship, deep connections between people, loyalty. After the movie we went to have a coffee. She had a long monologue about the film showing a women’s struggle for equality. It was a little bit of that, but very little. But as it is a trendy subject, she was blind to the real message of the story. Translations that reject the reality of the surrounding world when the text was first written, are useless rubbish. Thank you !
Film is more literary though. The message from any story or movie is what you take from it. Its been ages since 'death of the author'. She was well within literary analysis norms. This is different he is talking about primary historical documents. Its not comparative at all.
I am not religious, but do find theology to be interesting as a topic, and seeing this more nuanced, studied take on etymology and various historical interpretations is fascinating. It reminds me of many stories in fiction with a religion that's integral to the plot because many times it's more nuanced than what is "good" or "evil", and often you see the varying faiths or cultures having different ideas about the same thing while still having many commonalities. Fantastic video, man. I just clicked this on a whim because I think this kind of stuff is cool, but don't usually get it recommended to me as it's not my general area of interest. This immediately made me want to learn a bit more about this stuff.
Same, I'm coming to the conclusion that many religions are talking about the same God/s, the difference being philosophy or denominations. I kind of think the "Gnostic" books are similar, more denomination/philosophic differences.
Great video, on point as always! I simply wanted to add the Lilith statue shown has a lot of evidence pointing it’s actually Ishtar. Still debated but over the years it’s heavily weighing on Ishtar. Those “horns” are common in Mesopotamian art. It’s been a long time since I’ve studied the subject but I believe it was how their culture depicted crowns. That’s pretty much it. There really is a lot to say on the subject. I think a video exploring deeply the medieval views of angels and demons would be awesome!
I thought it was Ishtar too, but figured there were other names associated. I agree on the deeper dive into the influences that happened in the medieval period.
i remember hearing somewhere that that sort of horn thing was the origin of the concept of a halo, to signify divinity or being blessed; for example Moses was described as having fiery horns after he came down from Mt Sinai
There's a fascinating podcast on Ancient Faith Radio called "The Lord of Spirits" which talks about these matters using deep dives into scripture, ancient literary and physical evidence, and Orthodox Christian traditional teaching and experience. It's got a few years of episodes available and goes into all kinds of depth about spiritual history. One of the things that the hosts posit is that demons aren't only fallen angels (angel strictly speaking refers to a role, so celestial entities or bodiless powers might be more appropriate) but also the disembodied spirits of a portion of the Nephilim slain in the flood or in the wars against giants after the flood.
Thanks for introducing the podcast, man. Stuff like that's right up my alley. Now I've got something awesome to listen to at work :) Edit: Oh, and by the way, if you're into philosophy in general, you should check out "Philosophize This". Been listening to it for years. It's pretty dang good.
Except the flood never happened, at least not to the extent the bible says (itself plagiarized from The Epic of Gilgamesh). Nor were there giants, angels, or fallen angels. No nephilim. It's all mythology.
@GrendelsRage Mmmm, there is a Hindu myth of a flood, the Indian Noah is called Manu, China also has a flood story, the Chinese Noha is called Nuwah, were the Hindus and the ancient Chinese plagiarizing Gilgamesh? How about the legend of Deucalion and Pyrra? Were the ancient Greeks plagiarizing Gilgamesh? The legend of Atlantis also talks about a land swallowed by water. Many Native American tribes have Floyd's stories and myths I don't think Gilgamesh was their inspiration? There are flood legends in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines in South America, among the Inuits and so on and almost all legends mentions angry deities sending the flood to cleanse wicked huma s from it. If so many disparate cultures have similar myths the conclusion is that this event happened.
@@Hugh-Man0006 Except that the universality of the legends, and the pointed way that they all agree world-wide, aside from the biblical account which is contrary to the others, all suggest a common underlying experience with everyone aside from the followers of the Most High God agreeing with each other and claiming to have won rebellions against their former Most High Gods while receiving secret knowledge of forging and warfare, the very things that the biblical account says justified the destruction of the flood in the first place. The biblical account, meanwhile, says that not only did the rebellions against the Most High God fail, but they never even could have succeeded, and the knowledge given to man was to his destruction, not to his benefit.
so during the start of my awakening journey, about 2 years in, I was shown many paths, but only wanted the truth... I'm currently reading a selection of short stories by Lafcadio Hearn, a European writer who lived in Japan in the late 1800's. Most of the stories are centered around various demons, spirits, yokai and tengu. Very interesting takes on what another culture perceives as evil beings and the high jinx that they get up to.
I don't think oni, yokai, yurei, etc. really map over biblical demons at all. Maybe aukuma but that's about it. What's often translated in manga and anime as demon or demon king are usually actually psychopomps.
@@LittleLordFancyLad Well, Japan is very different in the fact that Shinto is animist. Spirits (kami) are present all throughout nature. The various youkai you find in Japanese mythology also have a dualistic nature, in the sense that they are partially spiritual in nature, but often also have a physical manifestation. They have a better analogue with European folklore - gnomes, fairies and what not. Psychopomps are very specific though, being solely shinigami. You also have to consider that manga and anime draw on a lot of different cultures for inspiration. Proper demons from Western civilizations are depicted quite often, where they are typically referred to as "Majin" in Japanese.
I’m just can’t read comics, so majin is new to me. A daughter knows it from Dragonball. I never liked oni translated as demon. They always seemed more like ogres to me. I am always asking about that. Nerds know that oni originally were deities, written with the alternate character missing the ‘horn’ stroke. I’m told that their characteristic is to eat people. In folktales they can be tamed and then are good, so they just aren’t as inherently evil. The psychopomp thing is from how in a later Buddhist interpretation they are associated with the Indian deity Yama as his vassals. Why demon just doesn’t work for me is that demons are incorporeal and capable of possessing people or animals if they are especially strong, and Japanese people just don’t seem to have a sense of this with oni. I mean people can become oni, things often change like that in Japanese stories, but they are not possessed by incorporeal air spirits as the Metatron only briefly touches on this here . . .
@@Shin_Lona "They have a better analogue with European folklore - gnomes, fairies and what not." Yes absolutely. " Psychopomps are very specific though, being solely shinigami." I was thinking of all the "Maou-sama" titles which are usually translated erroneously as "Demon King".

Neat coincidence that Aluka (being a hebrew "vampire" of sorts) is very close to "Alucard" which we often name characters that are derivative of Dracula in pop culture. I wonder if that had contributed to the decision to spell it backwards

@@initial_CDrakul is fierce warrior and nobelmanwho was so cruel towords Turks whose attacked in that time his principality and homland and Balkans....
Coincidence. "Drakul" means "dragon," and was an epithet given to the father of the infamous Vladimir Tepeš (that last name actually being an epithet in its own right, referring to the spikes Vlad impaled enemies upon). The nickname "Drakul," also spelled "Dracul," was given because of his prowess in battle. It is related to other words connected with dragons, including "dragon," "drake," and "draconian." Drakul's son was therefore also known as "Drakula," or "Dracula," literally "son of the dragon." Spelled backwards, "Alucard."
One thing to mention about Lilith, the second connection is dubious in that it is not uncommon to have separate accounts of the same event mentioned in the Bible.

This phenomenon (Baal in ancient Hebrew text being prescribed as demon in Western biblical texts) can be explained in a variety of ways. Metatron did a great analysis of linguistic and historical origins. As far as religious concepts go it can be explained by the following types of religious practice/belief (in descending order): Polytheistic ---> Henotheistic ---> Monotheistic When talking about ancient Hebrew religious text we can mostly omit Polytheism since many Hebrews (regardless of area [Babylon, Canaan, Levant region, etc.]) soley worshiped Yaweh. While the worship of one God implies monotheism the fact that they mention various Baal's, specifically in reference to deities worshiped by other cities/peoples, implies that they are acknowledging the existence of other deities (or rather that other people believe in other deities). However, despite their acknowledgement of these "other" deities they do not acknowledge them as "true" and only worship one diety (Yaweh). Therefore, this makes them Henotheistic, not monotheistic. This view of the "other" deities as untrue or false could have later been translated as powerful beings/spirits of evil or as malevolent misguiding figures which are often descriptors, deeds, and characteristics attributed to/associated with demons. To break it down think of it as followed: Polythesim is to the ancient Greek & Roman Pantheon Henotheism is to Ancient Hebrew religious texts/beliefs & other ancient Mesopotamian cultures/religions Christianity is to Monotheism. (Christianity is directly derived from Judaism & takes the "one God" to the extreme)
I would add that "Lilith" or rather the Lilithu in summerian mythology isn't one entity. It's a group of demons that functions as succubi. Regarding Baal Zebub. The proper name is probably Baal Zebul, meaning "Lord/Master of princes". The Isrealites have a thing for renaming foreign gods with derogatory titles

An alternate take I've seen becoming more popular at least among some scholars in the last few years about 666 is that it's a reference to Solomon getting 666 talents (a unit of measure) of gold each year which is mentioned in both in the first book of Kings and the second book of Chronicles. Solomon after he'd turned away from Yahweh towards all the usual kingly things like money, power and women. in other words it's about the wise king turning into a fallen tyrant. Which kind of fits with the themes around where the number is presented in Revelations in that there's also talk about how the fall of God's people in a similar way.
I think 666 is more symbolic in meaning… in Hebrew, 7 was considered the perfect number. It was completion. It can be argued then that 666 is the idea of coming close to perfection and never reaching it, over and over and over and over again. The true definition of hell. To see what you could’ve been and to have never reached it. We see many modern worldly philosophies try to mimic Godliness and goodness but always fall short whether in one major flaw or another. Whether it be the LGBT movement, the whole quest for “racial justice”, or any other tenant of wokism, we see that they come close to perfection and completion but fall so short of it due to a critical flaw in their own world view which sets them on the path to hell.
@nyrtzi You have some very good thoughts and points here. They make me think of the The movie Bruce Almighty, as it seems Solomon couldn't handle properly the wisdom that was given him. I have wondered for many years why Yahweh gave it to him, if he really wasn't going to use it properly in the long term. And maybe the purpose was to show, some things just need to be left up to Him....we humans just can't handle them properly.....we keep trying though......and we should, right?
despite being an Atheist (or agnostic as the term) religion as a whole is really interesting especially when it comes to deities and demons, with how ideas set and written change meaning over time because of people's new interpretation of those texts and even their own ideas incorporated into the older ideas
Right ? It's basically a giant fan fiction, it's pretty cool. That's why shows like Lucifer or Supernatural work so well, they just dig into the infinite amount of ancient lore.
@leamael00 it's like if religion is done correctly, it's a really good addition to stories and so, I guess it's also why a lot of fantasy tropes involve gods or holy orders
@@leamael00 Exactly. Man made God in his image, not the other way around. The Abrahamic God is not even as legitimate as the Chaos Gods in Warhammer 40K.

As a cradle Catholic from a 10th century French family who’s been intertwined with the church for some 500yrs, I always understood that angels and demons weren’t uniform in appearance and that there was a hierarchy Edit: kind of unrelated but a pet peeve in Hollywood. The grandparents and great-grandmother I knew said that ghosts couldn’t take possession, only demons; this includes inanimate objects
Can you elaborate? This sounds really interesting. The New Testament always talks about demons. ARE THESE THINGS REAL? What’s the difference between a psychosis by someone with mental illness and “objective” demons?
Fun fact: The demon in The Exorcist is based on a Mesopotamian demon called Pazuzu. Contrary to it's portrayal in the film, this one was considered a benevolent demon who would protect pregnant women and mothers from his rival Lamashtu.
To be fair, not quite benevolent, he still causes dust devils and sand storms and is himself the king of wind demons. But it is true that he defends pregnant mothers from Lamashtu.
There are more demons portrayed, both visually and behaviorally, in other texts than in the bible. I'd say most demons are found in grimoires and inquisitorial texts.
Rather than medieval texts you'd be better off with apocryphal texts like Enoch and other ancient near eastern sources. The closest approximation of what demons are, as described in the NT, are the rephaim of the Canaanites. In short they were spirits of dead sages and heroes from legend and the people of Canaan believed they could ascend to be with them in death if they did great things. The bible just presents them as evil which is very common in the bible. Take Genesis and how it describes the sons of God having hybrid offspring. In the religions of the nearby populations these were heroes. We remember them as Hercules and so on. In the bible they were villains and not heroes. Same goes for demons (who actually would be dead giants according to Enoch which again jives closely with what the Canaanites believed). Biblical cosmology and those of other populations in the region had their differences but they shared a *lot* more than is often appreciated. Peter even used the term Tartarus to describe where the angels who sired hybrid were thrown into prison directly borrowing the word from the Greeks (who may have received the idea themselves from the Hittites). Demons are never actually corporeal like angels and thus can not be fallen angels or aliens or anything else.
Honestly, I really hope we get more videos like this in the future. As fun as it is to watch you clown on bad history takes, the topic of mythology is a whole other level of satisfying.

I'd love to see more in depth videos on each of them demons mentioned. Its interesting how these being were originally portrayed compared to how they're seen now.
12:37 to be fair, thats actually ishtar. lilith herself as she is more popular understood shows up later on the medieval period if i'm not mistaken, the usage of her in any previous sacred text comes forward to be understood as bird of prey and not a spirit. the owl in roman society was considered a evil entity attributed to what we call now the witch, that would found origin on the word strix (in roman) or (striga in latin).
I experienced night terrors for many years. I don't know why this happened, but it was absolutely terrifying. I met a Rabbi online that prayed for me and the terrors stopped. He gave me a Hebrew prayer to pray when these terrors came at night. They came when I went to sleep. It felt like there was a force over me holding me down. I wasn't sure if I was awake or asleep. Sometimes there were actual demons in front of me that I could see, and sometimes they were laying next to me in my bed. I can't say for sure but I think it was linked to people in my family that was practicing witchcraft. Both of my parents were also narcissists, so I was surrounded with evil.
I love the way you give detail, references, explanations, avoiding the all-too-common easy generalisations and vague assumptions. Thank you for being one of the most intelligent channels on TH-cam.
I think the game Agony did a good job of portraying Biblical demons and visions of hell. Sadly the game was too much of a walking simulator, but the imagery was top notch. Like album cover art from black metal albums coming to life
@@Dogue83 In some ways I agree, but in others... When I saw the teaser videos it looked like a really awesome survival horror. But when I got my hands on the final product I felt disappointed because the gameplay ended up being a walking simulator with some puzzle solving (like every other walking simulator). I dislike walking simulators because I find them to be fraudulent. The developers make these lofty claims about "horror through atmosphere and helplessness" but at the end of the day, the real reason why they are so lacking in gameplay mechanics is either due to lazyness of the devs, lack of funding or both. There are really good survival horror games out there to take inspiration from. But it's just easier to make a game with pretty graphics than it is to make one with engaging mechanics.
If you made several hour+ long videos on biblical subjects I would watch all of them. I would pay for these videos, I've never seen or heard better breakdowns of biblical text.
I have, and he is falling in to noob type translation mistakes already. "Oh i discovered that this Hebrew word has multiple meanings so obviously the meaning they used in the Bible must be wrong. No sir, you are wrong." Swallow some pride brother. We don't need a Metatron translation of the Bible we already have a perfect English Bible. It called the Authorized Version AKA King James Version.

Satan meaning Adversary is interesting - I just finished reading Clark Ashton Smith's "Averoigne" cycle, set in medieval France, and there are many mentions throughout the series to "the Adversary". For whatever reason, Smith never uses Satan or the Devil or other terms, just the Adversary. Not sure if that's a medieval French thing, or Smith thing, something about the time he was writing (most of the stories in the series were written in the 1930s), or what, but it is curious. Also curious is that in all but one tale, the forces of evil never seem to be negatively impacted by holy water or exorcisms....
The adversary is the Catholic word I know. It means the enemy but can mean the forces of darkness or the personification of evil himself. It is used a lot as a catch-all term to not get caught up in the specifics. An enemy deity or satan is more of a semantic argument - its a black and white world view. Evil or agent thereof.
I absolutely love this. I am a Christian and completely believe the Bible. I think it's perfect. My point is that I love discussing it and learning about its words, titles and names. Thank you so much! Love this❤
@Omglolleri Why do people who know nothing about the Bible always post ignorant comments about slavery? It seems to be the only thing they think they know about. Biblical slavery is not slavery that is based on a race as you know it. Blacks being enslaved by whites and vice versa, for example Yes, Africans were selling their own people into slavery. I digress, Ancient Israelite society allowed slavery; however, total domination of one human being by another was not permitted. Rather, slavery in antiquity among the Israelites was closer to what would later be called indentured servitude. Slaves were seen as an essential part of a Hebrew household. Joseph himself was a quote un quote slave who grew in rank to become basically second to pharaoh. That is not going to happen with the slavery that you think you know about. I am tired of dead people making ignorant comments in regards to the Bible and God without having a clue. You have nothing more then a skewed world view on the Bible and God. Either that or you are just going along with the crowd. Now you mentioned genocide. Where in the Bible does it talk about genocide?
@@Omglolleri Sorry bud, God didnt create slavery, and never committed genocide. Stop parroting left wing emotional talking points without facts. Educate yourself.
YES I love these theology videos. Metatron is the most qualified youtuber to speak on it, being that he speaks Hebrew and Latin and understands translational differences
Alukah being bloodlusting monsters sound awefully close to Alucard which is a vampire. And I always thought it was just dracula spelled backwards! But now I'm almost convinced it's the other way around.
What an enjoyable video! As a non religious person I found the Bible fascinating, both for its ancestral wisdom and historical testimony. I was raised Catholic and most of my friends still are, so it always leads to a very interesting conversation to analyze the Bible from a historical perspective. You boarded the subject with a lot of nuance and respect, much respect to you , Meta!
having had it shoved down my throat for 18 years I find it annoying and completely irrelevant but I appreciate Metatron's analytical and scientific approach to things.
@@zaco-km3su A +2.000 year old text has history woven in every line, regardless if it's truth, propaganda, fiction or a cooking recipe. Just by the way it's written, the things that get referenced, the things that don't: It's a window to the past!
@@cocobunitacobuni8738 That seems to be the case for many people. Religion is evidently prone to dogmatic-heavy teaching, luckily my experience was very "light weight" . Cheers friend
15:30 - This speculation derives solely from a misunderstanding of Hebrew storytelling. The apparent disconnect from Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 is because they're not strictly chronological, instead Genesis 1 gives the chronology and Genesis 2 adds more detail. So there is no room here for a 'first' woman who is not Eve.
The idea of Nero and Caligula as 666 and 616 is very plausible as these were contemporary texts. They were written aimed at the people alive at the time, not for posterity. We see allusion and allegory. The people of the time were much more likely to see the references to real people. Excellent video, as always!
The Old Testament does mention Satyr's and Lilith or the Screech Owl as demons. Also the serpent in the garden in Hebrew is Nachash, which is actually a brilliant shining one, described as standing on 2 legs and marvelous colors. Don't forget about the Seraphim, but those are not specifically evil, but are angels. The Greek would have described them as demons, since they didn't have a negative connotation of the word at the time
@CymruCelt01 You're right about the nachash. I found this out later in my study. But, there are 2 different uses and definitions for the same Hebrew word nachash. Strongs concordance number H5175 is serpent. But there is another, Strongs number H5172 which is used for divine, divination, enchantments etc in the Old Testament. It's first use with this definition is with Joseph in Genesis 44:15. It is the same Hebrew word, with different Strongs numbers and definitions. But, there are extra biblical writings that do refer to the nachash, in Jewish tradition, as being a brilliant shining one, described as standing on 2 legs. But in the Bible it is not carried with that definition. So it still is true, just not scriptural.
@CymruCelt01 yes. And all I'm saying is that there are 2 different definitions to the same word in the Bible, and then there is also another definition in Jewish tradition and legend. Read the writings of Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews.
@CymruCelt01 what is incorrect? The fact that there are 2 different definitions of nachash in the Bible itself, and that there are multiple uses of the word outside of the Bible? No, I'm sorry, but that is correct
You’re the man Meta. I love this deep stuff people don’t normally talk about. Alot of people get a corrupt view of this material from shows on the CW lol. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Yes please do more of these! I read and study the Bible and I have found that what it says is quite different from what most religious people say it says. Your perspective is interesting and refreshing.
Dear Metatron, please make more videos about the Bible from a historical perspective. Thank you! BTW I love your videos, keep up the great work and thanks again🙏
Being a kid with a curios mind, I've in later years (54 now) come to question everything, I love it as I enjoy learning history, geography among other things.... Fantastic work!
This was highly entertaining. As an atheist, the theology doesn't appeal to me, but as folk lore and understanding the original linguistic roots is endlessly fascinating to me.
An atheist. From Greek. Meaning one who does not believe in the greek/panhelenistic pantheon of gods. Adopted by the Romans so they could prosecute Christians under law. Now a generic meaning not believing in any deity or deities.
@@antonyosborne5261"Terrorist: French revolutionary during the Reign of Terror" ... As stated in the video: applying improper context to words may greatly distort their meaning. Also, the ancient greek atheos (adjective meaning 'godless', 'impious') is not the same as the latin noun atheismus (meaning the doctrine empty of (G/g)od(s)), which is not the same as the english noun 'atheist' (meaning someone who is not a theist).
@Metatronyt What is your take on the 'monomyth'? The idea that all mythologies have a common root ancestor, which explains the similarities of the pyramids in Egypt, South America, and China, and the connection to what Graham Hancock tells of an ancient civilization?
I loved this video. This is the concept of the Metatron at it's best. Thanks Raff. I am a word nerd, so this type of video is right up my alley as word meanings and usage in context with their etymology and evolution is basically my life in a nutshell. LOL

Upon discovering your amazing channel, some time ago, and recognising your education, exceptional intelligence and generosity with your information, I immediately became a subscriber. These videos never disappoint; rather, they enlighten profoundly, often in the most powerful ways. I'd always wondered about the etymology of words such as "demon"; their origin, development, apparently constant shift in meaning, and so forth. Of course, there are many internet sources which can, more or less, clarify these concepts; however, hearing it from a genuine, living scholar like you is so much more of a treat. It helps to drive home the most important details of any subject and you are, without question, the best among the TH-cam scholars who delve into these subjects. So, thank you for your work. It is always greatly appreciated.
wanna know who is the real demon? it's jesus himself ! the baals where the god of justice or of the natural forces. child sacrifices to moloch or baal are fictional ! - Jesus will wield a sword when he returns for judgment day, christians does portray him as a violent figure. - Christians should accept Jesus and suffer for him in order to escape demons, gremlins, monsters, and hellfire. - God, in order to manifest on Earth, impregnated a human woman to give birth to a 100% humanified God. - Jews will betray Jesus and the Romans will execute him, but his death somehow magically extinguishes sin. cause this simple execution is in reality all the sins of the world that jesus carry on his cross while he is crusified he is not put to death because the romans sentenced him. but because he somehow magically extinguished sin by dying. god is so much great and so smart and love you so much that he sent his only son to die without letting him ask his choice "father why have you forsaken me" but somehow his death is magical and save ! read john-13 he still is god ! (jesus ret*rded logic) - the book of Revelation claim that only the elected or those who believe in the man-made book will be saved, while others will go to hell.
A while back, I needed some inspiration, so I opened the Bible to a random page. It opened to 2 Chron 21:18 which read "The LORD struck him in his bowels with an incurable illness." I tried again, opening to another random page. This time it opened to Jonah 1:7-11 which read "And the lot fell upon Jonah". At that point I gave up!
I think it doesn't really matter if they're 'real?' A daemon that is 'just in the mind' is really that reassuring? The concept of being haunted/tormented/possessed is just as 'real' to the skeptic. If medication works because god likes the smell or if it is a chemical imbalance or what have you, the results matter.
just finished watching the video in which you adressed the current scentbird drama, and now that i stumbled upon this video, talking about demons, i can't help but chuckle about the fact that where demons are mentioned, scentbird is nearby!
Man I love your videos, I barley made it out of high-school, mostly due to financial issues and I could never really afford collage but I love learning new stuff thank you this us 1 of my favorite historical channels on youtube
Baal in Hebrew still means something like the English word 'master' today and is used as such. I'm too lazy to check the spelling though. I always thought the 'demons' mentioned in the Bible were along the lines of 'things non-Israelites worshiped' or 'angels we don't really like' until Christianity demonified them. There is a book I started reading a long time ago called the Origin of Satan which talked about how he was turned from an angel into the devil. Edit: Something I just remembered is the Passover Hagada has a section where various ancient rabbis (and I'm not sure they would count considering that I think they would have dated at least a few hundred years after the timeframe this video covers) tried to amplify the number of miracles done. One suggests each miracle was actually five miracles in one, one of which included sending 'evil messengers/angels.'
I thought demons were usually the fallen angles like Lucifer. Which they happened to be worshipped by non Israelites. Lucifer became Satan by falling from grace so I thought that’s how the other demons come to exist. In the Old Testament God is said to make the false deities hide in fear when he is inside their temples. So I interpret that as the Idols to which the non-Israelites worship are those fallen angels. It never reads as though the demons and Idols are fictional and that there is only God but reads as though they are just false deities.
@@ICECAPPEDSKYThat is pretty much what I meant. My understanding is Satan from Job, pretty much the only example which doesn't fit, stopped being viewed as an angel and more as the devil (and the start of the concept of the devil) during the schism between the early Christians and Jews more or less as a political tool like calling someone a Nasi today.
Shew man, I love the videos, but one thing I learned today; no matter how much I want to, I can’t binge them😜. So thorough and thought provoking. I may not sleep for days being unable to shut down my brain. Keep up the good work.
I encountered an actual Demon 'Face to Face' back in 1993. At the time, it was posing as the Spirit of a Dead Human. (I.E. a 'Ghost') They are the spirits of dead hybrids, who are condemned to wander the Earth as disembodied Spirits, until the final judgement. That's one of the reasons they are so obsessed with possession. They are desperate to have a body again. These beings then, are in contrast to Fallen Angels. Baalzebub was a Fallen Angel, hence the labeling as an 'Enemy Deity', by ancient Israel.
It's always very interesting to see how religions like Christianity were shaped from their interactions with other religions and from historical events. Especially the original texts like the old testament which is wildly different from the new and the influences of other civs is way more clear and prevalent.

ESOTERICA does a marvelous job at explaining and going in depth of ancient Israelite religions and many other topics about the sort. Also how things came to be common place in religion as well. He's very much like yourself Meta, a truth seeker. If you've never heard of him I can't recommend his channel enough to you. The more I study and see what other people have uncovered about this popular text. I see that the Bible is an abhorrent translation of the real meaning the prophets portrayed in their ancient words of wisdom of Christ through memory. I blame the dudes under King James trying to control a population to gain power through the folly of peoples illiteracy and ignorance of the very thing they were trying to teach. Then through the scribes own ignorance in struggling to translate Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, also cherry picking books and verses, then hiding the rest of the related books at the Vaticans hidden library, has cause a massive butterfly effect through the ages misleading people to the real word and how its perceived by everyone. Now is totally lost its meaning through every modern translation its not even the same thing anymore. Now people just view it as lies and dismiss it completely because they don't know the real truth about what really happened to this great sacred text.
Good video! Interestingly, the Dead Sea scrolls provide much more details about fallen angels (who I guess would technically be demons). The Book of Eli has a chapter where it even lists all the names of the fallen angels who taught humanity various things after the exile from Eden. I think mentioning them would've been appropriate in this video.
That's a huge topic though. You've got the Watchers, the uncivilised humans they watched, all the things they taught the humans and the likely links to Babylonian beliefs, the nephilhim half-angels that were possibly giants and the links to Noah and the flood. It deserves a video of its own
I love this series! I'm writing a fictional book about angels and demons, so it's great to learn more about them from a trusted source! :) Also, will you make a video dedicated to the story of Adam, Eve, and maybe Lilith? I would love to learn more about Lilith particularly, even though I've made a lot of research on her. I'm not exactly which sources to trust in those instances.
If you other sources you should look up interviews with exorcists. Christians have little need to look too much towards history when exorcists fight those demons today.
TH-cam channel esoterica might be useful to you, there are multiple videos on lilith and demonology in general from scholarly point of view, with sources in description and the guy that make videos is a professor with PhD

I would love to see some focused deep dives on some of the things covered in this video and similar topics. I feel like several of the points covered could easily fill 30 minutes on their own. And the honest approach (and of course I expect nothing less from the Metatron, Custos Veritatis) that neither holds back for fear of offending, or goes out of its way to put down the beliefs of others, but seeks only to understand the facts, is so important for any academic study of historical events, traditions, beliefs, documents, peoples, or cultures.
As a Demonosopher I must say that I truly and thoroughly enjoyed this episode. ( not that I don't enjoy most of your content) thank you for always keeping me humble and aware that there is always something more to learn. ❤
I already knew a bit about the 'Baal' thing (Baal being an honorific similar to "lord") because it was discussed in a fiction I've read at one point. Still, this subject matter is quite interesting. I look forward to your next video on the related subjects. (PS: Lilith is somehow related to the story of Gilgamesh? Why am I not surprised...)
As an Israeli atheist jew I love to see you describe my culture from the perspective of an outsider. Your Hebrew pronunciation is shockingly accurate and gives me joy.
I love how Israelis use the argument:"GOD GAVE US THIS LAND" to destroy the lives of Palestinians, and take their land, and then, so many of you are actually atheists. LOOOOL. Humanity at its best. Fucking priceless.
I personally like the Shinto approach to demons, ghosts, spirits and gods in which they are essentially interchangable. The japanese term "kami" is usually translated as "god" while the japanese term "majin" is usually translated as "devil" or "evil spirit". But in Shinto belief a majin can also be refered to as a kami and vice versa. The terms don't really refer to the nature of the entity but to wether they are helpful to humans or not. A kami is helpful to humans, a majin is not. But that also can depend very much on circumstances. You could refer to the same entity as a kami if you want to sweettalk it into helping you but also as a majin if you want to try and intimidate it into leaving you alone (or, if you are strong enough, to strongarm it into helping you in some way). I also like that those kami and majin come in a full range of power levels from kami so weak that they are more pitied than feared by humans to majin so powerful that the only option for a human is to hunker down and hope it passes by without bothering you. Oh and by the way, in shintoism there are at least 8 million kami.
Great video on the topic. I really love how you are able to hold your focus. When i was a young history student our old prof preaches his understanding of "working" history every single hour, "hold the line" i heard this 3 words over and over again, that was annoying in a way because it seems as if he wanted to trap his students from the beautiful land of "free interpretation". It took some time before i understood that before you can fly you have to be safe on the ground first. And that is what you are delivering so easily, a ground to work upon, the traps in history are that trying to explore uncharted land comes with thin sources, sometimes just one sideline in one reliable source and the danger is that leaves a huge space for interpretation and you could spin fascinating theories but have no possibility to falsify or viceversa. In your videos those lines are well set and crystal clear, not closing the door but making clear where speculation cannot be taken as proven. My hat is off Sir.

@prader1330
Dr.
His book on Psalm 82 is good too.

Thank you !
So... what was the movie?
I also thought it was related to Ishtar somehow.
Now I've got something awesome to listen to at work :)

I mean people can become oni, things often change like that in Japanese stories, but they are not possessed by incorporeal air spirits as the Metatron only briefly touches on this here . . .

It is related to other words connected with dragons, including "dragon," "drake," and "draconian." This phenomenon (Baal in ancient Hebrew text being prescribed as demon in Western biblical texts) can be explained in a variety of ways. Metatron did a great analysis of linguistic and historical origins. As far as religious concepts go it can be explained by the following types of religious practice/belief (in descending order): Polytheistic ---> Henotheistic ---> Monotheistic
When talking about ancient Hebrew religious text we can mostly omit Polytheism since many Hebrews (regardless of area [Babylon, Canaan, Levant region, etc.]) soley worshiped Yaweh.
To break it down think of it as followed:
Polythesim is to the ancient Greek & Roman Pantheon
Henotheism is to Ancient Hebrew religious texts/beliefs & other ancient Mesopotamian cultures/religions
Christianity is to Monotheism.
Hard to blame them when it comes to Babylonians

An alternate take I've seen becoming more popular at least among some scholars in the last few years about 666 is that it's a reference to Solomon getting 666 talents (a unit of measure) of gold each year which is mentioned in both in the first book of Kings and the second book of Chronicles. Solomon after he'd turned away from Yahweh towards all the usual kingly things like money, power and women. in other words it's about the wise king turning into a fallen tyrant. Which kind of fits with the themes around where the number is presented in Revelations in that there's also talk about how the fall of God's people in a similar way.
Carbon 12 has 6 protons, 6 electrons, and 6 neutrons and so carbon based life, including Mankind, has a number 666 in every atom of their DNA.
in some translations the number is 616
I think 666 is more symbolic in meaning… in Hebrew, 7 was considered the perfect number.
What’s racial justice ?

@@adamplentl5588 true that
As a cradle Catholic from a 10th century French family who’s been intertwined with the church for some 500yrs, I always understood that angels and demons weren’t uniform in appearance and that there was a hierarchy
Edit: kind of unrelated but a pet peeve in Hollywood. The grandparents and great-grandmother I knew said that ghosts couldn’t take possession, only demons; this includes inanimate objects
"Ghosts" aren't real. Ghosts are just demons pretending to be human spirits. God wouldn't forget to judge someone's soul and leave them on earth
Contrary to it's portrayal in the film, this one was considered a benevolent demon who would protect pregnant women and mothers from his rival Lamashtu.
until that
One Fateful Day, eh ?
:D
To be fair, not quite benevolent, he still causes dust devils and sand storms and is himself the king of wind demons. But it is true that he defends pregnant mothers from Lamashtu.
Also being attributed with locust swarms
That was the Exorcist 2. Best to ignore that cash grab and go to the Exorcist 3 which was the same writer as the first movie. :P
Demon just means spirit and all demons were like this. Scary to enemies but to friends; a friend in life.
There are more demons portrayed, both visually and behaviorally, in other texts than in the bible. I'd say most demons are found in grimoires and inquisitorial texts.
And the Biblical Apocrypha.
I'm pretty sure most of those probably date around 1000 or so years after the period we are talking about here.
So biblical fanfiction?
@@cp1cupcake Nah, absolutely not true when it comes to some Apocrypha.

I think the game Agony did a good job of portraying Biblical demons and visions of hell.
Sadly the game was too much of a walking simulator, but the imagery was top notch.

Agony was criminally underrated

Oh look, Apollyon - Smith also uses that word in "The Colossus of Ylourgne".
Love this❤
Owning slaves and genocides are perfect things? Ok, I could not disagree more
@Omglolleri Why do people who know nothing about the Bible always post ignorant comments about slavery?

@CymruCelt01 and there is nowhere in the Bible that says the serpent was "in" the tree
@CymruCelt01 what is incorrect? The fact that there are 2 different definitions of nachash in the Bible itself, and that there are multiple uses of the word outside of the Bible? No, I'm sorry, but that is correct
@CymruCelt01 and i said nowhere in the Bible does it say the serpent was "in" the tree

An atheist.
As stated in the video: applying improper context to words may greatly distort their meaning. just finished watching the video in which you adressed the current scentbird drama, and now that i stumbled upon this video, talking about demons, i can't help but chuckle about the fact that where demons are mentioned, scentbird is nearby!
It never reads as though the demons and Idols are fictional and that there is only God but reads as though they are just false deities.
out of all the "demons" saturn/moloch/kronus the child eater is THE MOST EVIL!
@@ICECAPPEDSKYgo look up Unseen Realm by Dr Michael Heiser
@@ICECAPPEDSKYThat is pretty much what I meant. My understanding is Satan from Job, pretty much the only example which doesn't fit, stopped being viewed as an angel and more as the devil (and the start of the concept of the devil) during the schism between the early Christians and Jews more or less as a political tool like calling someone a Nasi today.
I prefer Baal Our Lord and Saviour.
Shew man, I love the videos, but one thing I learned today; no matter how much I want to, I can’t binge them😜. So thorough and thought provoking. I may not sleep for days being unable to shut down my brain. Keep up the good work.
I love these topics! I've been watching Jordan Peterson's Biblical Series on Exodus and your videos are a perfect pairing ❤
None of them come from the Holy Spirit. I wouldn't touch Jordan Peterson's theology with a ten foot pole. Its a trap.
Wow ! Such an interesting topic for new video ! Thank You very much! 😊
See Mesopotamian religion and Zoroastrianism for that answer mainly, though there seems to have been some Greco-Roman influence as well

I mean abrahamic religions are basically ancient Sumerian and Bbabylonia legends gain significant power after all.

4:27. I'm loving the way you are tackling this. No biases and no leading questions or statements. Just stating facts.
It deserves a video of its own
@@pumellhorneIt is widely believed That The Demons are Disembodied spirits of The Nephilem but I could be wrong friend.
I love this series! I'm writing a fictional book about angels and demons, so it's great to learn more about them from a trusted source! :)
Also, will you make a video dedicated to the story of Adam, Eve, and maybe Lilith?

Christ is King.
