  • Is the Base model M3 Macbook Air good enough? There was a lot of controversy around the previous base model. What is the difference between the M2 Macbook Air and the M3 Macbook Air? My M3 Macbook Air first impressions.

    Patrick, general comment. I have bounced around different reviewers and have stuck with you and Marques. First your presentation manner is top notch like the way you opened with the unboxing and displayed all the elements without comment. But most of all, you strike a good medium of saying what is good and what isn’t and make it sound appropriate for use case and possibilities among current tech. As an old techie (Amiga was my start and love) who spends less these days and wants to get to working solutions faster, you hit the spot. Thank you and keep it up! (And jealous of your studio)

    Thank you for this review. I basically only use my home laptop for basic web browsing, youtube videos, watching streams, netlfix, hulu, etc. By the way some of these tech review youtubers talk about 8GB of RAM, you would think that the laptop was going to catch on fire with basic use.

    Here’s the deal…for all the folks who think 8gb and 256gb is not enough, you’re more than welcome to upgrade before you buy. For us folks that aren’t power users and are price conscious, the standard Air is perfectly fine. It’s crazy that folks want to eliminate a choice for some people based on their supposed needs when options for them are available.

    I've been around computers for a while and know that the primary advantage of increased memory is multitasking and avoidance of disk swapping. That was a big deal back when all hard drives were mechanical and slow, and it's still an issue now because it can potentially shorten the life of soldered down storage. Having said all that, I completely agree that it all depends on the persons use case. My first M1 device was the base Mac mini and with my use case it was perfect, with no disk swapping (I monitored it closely). I didn't have a bunch of Chrome tabs open at the same time. When my computer needs increased I got the base M1 Studio Max but I think most folks won't have to do that.

    Great video! Probably one of the most level-headed approaches to talking about the base model MacBook Air. So many people haven't even actually given it an honest shot to see if it meets their needs and immediately dismiss its existence. I get that the price for upgrades isn't appealing, but wouldn't you be saving money regardless getting the base model. That's just my thought process 🤷

    I bought m2 base model last year and returned it. It is slow even though I did some light stuff as a teacher like uploading material to drives and vise versa. It is ok but with the 16 gig I felt the difference. 8 g is good but I did not like slow and need a faster thing and thus I got the 16 gigs with 1 t internal storage. It is more relieving yet ver expensive for me.

    I have an 8gb/512gb M1 Macbook Air that I use for running around. I'm not a power user but I tend to keep tons of tabs open across multiple browser windows. Until recently I'd actually forgotten the M1 Air was only 8GB and I never had any noticeable slowdowns for a casual use tab hoarder. It performs just like my more powerful machines in that respect. When it came time for my 70 year old mother to buy a new air, I knew base would do just fine for Netflix and home shopping needs.

  • @GlennEdell
    @GlennEdell 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I would so much want the Air with a mini-led screen. I don't understand why they refuse to make one. I would be willing to pay for it. I want the form factor and the lightness of an Air but with a fantastic screen. I don't want to go up to a heavy Pro model just to get the better screen. I'm just a normal user and don't need all the pro stuff. However... I want a great screen. Why Apple? Just charge us like you do with all other products. Would it be heavier, thicker perhaps?

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      My guess is battery life. A screen like that would consume a lot more and could run hotter. The air doesn't have a fan.

    I don’t understand how some people can get in their feelings because of someone else’s choice. Apple has always charged a premium for their products and rightfully so. I have iPods that still work. I have a iPad from 2015 that works well. My mother in law’s iPhone 7 still works and she uses it. I don’t mind paying for something that works. I also have never needed a laptop with more than 8gb of ram. If people didn’t buy the base, Apple wouldn’t sell it.

      I got 16/512 M3. Worked on 8/256 M2 for the last year, medium demanding work and it was pretty fine 99% of the time, but I run some Docker containers and do programming, so 16GB would help. But yes better 16/256 than 8/512, since you can always have external SSD (not so practical, but still can help)/
      My SSD also got full (256GB), but I do iPhone backup to laptop and have 50GB of music, also work stuff is 50GB. You could be fine with 256GB if you do not store much there and 16GB will make it super fast, whatever you do. (will help for games a bit too)

    How would an 8GB MBA M3 handle connection to MS Azure Virtual Desktop during the workday? Apps on AVD are Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint and a few others of similar resource needs. I’ve seen the M2 Mac Mini handle tons of heavy tasking with 8GB RAM (4K video editing, photo editing) and did so like a champ. Can the M3 Air do the same or would I have no choice but go 16GB? I’ve used my wife’s M1 Air and it does great, but I can’t test more than 20-30 min of use on AVD so I don’t know if the resource usage gets worse as a work day drags on.

    I used an Air for 13 days then returned it. I went to buy a Pro and realized It was not worth it to me so walked out of store with nothing. Ive been using my Dell G55525 laptop, 4 hour battery life, 32GB DDR5 memory... Thats the thing. I upgraded the laptop myself back in Febuary with a $85 24GB stick and replaced one of the 8gb ones. The Dell doesn't have as bright of colors but it has 144hz refresh rate. Its bulky but it runs multiple VM's,, dozends of Tabs, and multiple desktops. Mac is very convenient for basic computing tasks but many things are very limited unless you spend $4k, but at that point NVIDIA is king with performance, Apple is nowhere near a RTX 4090.
