    Great video as always! I use them in reverse osmosis plants along with a salinity sensor to determine the quality of the water. 2 plumbed into a T (1 normally closed and 1 normally open). When the salinity sensor detects good water the NC valve is energized and the NO valve de-energized, sending good water to the storage tank! We also use electronic ball valves which would make a great vid....

    6:20 You cannot reverse the current to reverse the force on the plunger in an NO or NC valve configuration- it will generate a pulling force regardless of the direction of the current. You can see this by the fact that both wires usually have the same color. At 6:20 you'd have to switch the position of the plunger (moving part of the armature) and pole piece (fixed part of the armature). The pole piece is commonly made hollow, with a shaft connecting the plunger (now on top) to the seal.
    Reversing direction of current is used in the case of latching valves, which have a permanent magnet. The solenoid then either adds to the permanent magnetic field, or subtracts from it when it is reversed.
    I suppose you could use a permanent magnet in an NC or NO valve? That just seems needlessly complicated to me - would like to see your next video.

    • @jasonwalker4610
      @jasonwalker4610 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Correct. Without a magnet in the plunger, the coil will pull the metal plunger to the center of the coil regardless of polarity.

      Yeah. I was also highly disappointed to see that solenoid valves are pretty much all diaphragm valves and solenoid actually operates pilot hole on membrane. It's not common to use plunger to close flow directly. So this video isn't exactly correct who they actually work mechanics vise.

    Awesome. This thing should work for my tidepool idea: hydro flood table above a octopus, starfish, and rock filled aquarium set to flood every 12 hours with the hydroponics pump, thus drawing water from the aquarium (low tide). This solenoid thingie and a tube will be on a 12 hour timer to flood the water back down (high tide). Offset timers by 6 hours and you have a tide pool, in theory lol.

    Solenoid Valves are used in several automobile application, such as the electronic fuel injectors. Other automobile applications, such as drag racing, apply them to control the flow of Nitrous Oxide. By pulsing the solenoid at variable frequencies, we can progressively add Nitrous Oxide to the engine.

    Only one thing: regardless of the direction of current flow through the coil, the solenoid will still move the metalic piston in the same direction i.e. the solenoid will bring the metalc piston center of mass in the point where the coil magnetic flux density is strongest.
    Thought that wasn't very clear at 6:15

    • @jeffm2787

    When I was younger, I put hydraulics on my truck. The kit came with pumps, cylinders, hoses, and dump valves (solenoids). Throw the switch one way and the pump would come on and the cylinder go up. Throw it the other way and the solenoid would open and the weight of the vehicle would push it back down. Now i know what the inside of those valves looked like and how they worked.

In those the amound the valve opens or closes can be varied by changing how much current is passed through the coil.

      I’ve seen em used quite a bit in the oil and gas industry.

    Interesting use of a solenoid valve is to control the flow of natural gas to a kitchen range by wiring it in series with the range exhaust hood. The only time there is gas flowing to the kitchen range is when the range hood fan is powered on. When the hood is powered on by a switch, the gas flows, when the hood is powered off, no gas.
    Great simple way to build in safety to a kitchen range so the exhaust hood always has to be used.

    Hi, there. I saw this device in an industrial system, like water. There are many of them. It's interesting to see how these devices really work.

    I'm currently rebuilding a digger's whole electrical system after it burned down and even though I knew roughly how solenoid valves work I've been curious how they're built inside. Nicely shown, thanks!
