tbf to ivan public high schools weren’t really a thing until less than a century ago and there weren’t many at all until the 30s/40s! Like my grandparents attended one room school houses lmfao that’s why 8th graduation ceremonies still happen (tho probably more prevalent in rural areas, im not rlly sure) bc kids were expected to go into the labor force or start families or work on their family’s farm full time after 8th grade. ‘Older’ boys didn’t even go to school most of the year in farming communities, just in the winter! And even today education is only compulsory up to 16 years old in like half of the states so if your family needs you to make income to survive there’s nothing stopping them from taking you out of school and making you start to work which is psychotic but probably also helps some kids get out of their homes earlier if needed
