the 1940s hairstyle is part of your history, whether you like it or not. Damn guys, you can see in their other videos, including Germany, Ireland, and others that they don't sugar coat the thoughts and trends at the time. and yes, the trend during the 1940s was to be very nationalistic. Whatever origin that nationalism may have had, it's not important. what's important is that it happened. don't erase your history.
Twister Exactly. Its better to acknowledge mistakes than forgetting it actually happened or else it might happen again. You can also tell on the look of Mei the model as she wraps her head with the sign that it was not happy times for her. The everyday woman. My father is Japanese and he is very ashamed of what had happened in the 1940's from Japan. thank you for your comment :)
Twister people are so sensitive these days...it's sad. Just because the video focuses on beauty of the decades. Doesn't mean it's all pretty i.e. The 1940's era of most countries. In the China video, the model wore a communist hat but no one bitched in the comments.
+オタクカワイイ
i said 'some stupid japanese.'

Twister around the late taisho era, women abandoned the nihongami all together, which is now only worn by geisha and maiko today. they began wearing western styled hair after that
I think the origins of that nationalism are important.

SINISTER system You are a fucking humongous dork. "Uh, no."
SINISTER system If Harajuku is Japanese Street Fashion, she could've been talking about the 90s - 2010's
"harajuku is a term of japanese street fashion as a whole." NO
harajuku style only encompases SOME styles. For example Lolita, decora and general aomoji styes (depicted in magazines like zipper or KERA for example)
ganguro, mamba, gyaru and other styles depicted in magazines like egg, ageha, popteen etc are styles associated with shibuya. In fact they are styles heavily associated with shibuya 109 even. Those tribes were always around that shopping mall.
Now because gyaru sis pretty much dead (sad sad) many gyaru brands have shifted the direction of their clothes.

its the rise of the "lolita" culture within Japan.
Lolita culture starts in the 90's (first shop open in the 70's)
1980's sports the Seiko-chan hairstyle, popularized by Seiko Matsuda in the 80's, but has been around since the 70's.
Aw, this was actually really nostalgic because the 1920s-1950s is when my obaachan (grandma) lived in Japan and she was such a beauty and always in fashion. I always love looking at her old photos from that time and the video got the looks spot-on. I also liked the 80s because it looked exactly like my mom and my aunt from that time, haha.
I really appreciate these videos, not only from a history standpoint but also because I kept going, "She looks like me!" which rarely ever happens in both Western and Asian beauty media (since I'm mixed, I always feel left out of both, and I often had very low self esteem growing up because I wasn't "pretty" in the typical American white girl way...turns out I was just pretty in the Japanese way and never realized!). It was very accurate to what my grandmother told me about her style and also what I've seen in Japanese media nowadays. But my favorite part is the representation of non-Western beauty standards.
+Emily Erickson I was watching this at my Japanese friend's house and his mother was literally like "omg what is that video that 80s looks is SO me in my 20s!" XD

+Emily Erickson I'm glad it makes you happy

But why does it matter that she "looks like you," though? Beauty is beauty whether you look similar to them or not, because there is no one set way of being beautiful. In fact I often find it fascinating seeing a person look beautiful in a different way.

1990 the second look displayed is a ganguro look that was created to push boundaries. The 2010 look is a harajuku look. Their research video gives more information.
Search for gyaru and its substyles.
Literally all sundays in Harajuku was filled with Ganguro rebel girls, visual kei guys and some lolita here and there. It's a subculture, and it's popular enough to have it portrayed. Go to Harajuku on the weekends, or close to Akihabara, it's filled with people looking like anime girls/guys.

There's nothing wrong to remember what happened before to avoid making the same horrible mistake. I hope you do realize you are talking about millions of lives.
I also heard of part of Japanese denied Nanking Massacre. But not for making people happy though.
Any voice is welcomed.
Unfortunately the hate still lives on today. The Japanese prime minister himself is a genocide denier. The holocaust killed 8 million jews. The Japenese killed a net total of 30 + million Koreans and Chinese civilians. If the German president was a holocaust denier she would get put in prison and there would be public outrage. When shinzo abe denies genocide worst than the holocaust, he gets away Scot-free. The 1940s really isnt the time to think about fashion.
@zoe The Japanese also had some fucked up shit happen to them, many innocent lives lost due to the nuclear bombings and from the radiation, if you really wanna get triggered over history then fuck off
A beauty video. everybody had their parts in the wars lol...
if the German president was a holocaust denier that would create public outrage, Shinzo Abe denies mass genocide and continues to do so.
do you tell holocaust victims to stop talking about their history? what the fuck. why would tell chinese and korean people to stop talking about japanese facism? it's bad enough that it's not taught in schools, and you're silencing people on a public video? get a life.
Wow not only Japan's technology is advanced their make up skills is advanced as well
NIGERIA NEXT PLEASE!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎊💖🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
I agree 🇳🇬
That will be amazing, though which culture should they choose, up until the 80's and 90's most ethnic groups retained their hairstyles. Braids were Ofcourse very popular between all the ethnic groups so it will make the video very challenging for them to make.
+David Higan They could do Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or Fulani. These are the four largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. I really hope they do Nigeria next for an African country. It has the biggest population of any African country. 1 in 4 Africans is a Nigerian. And their diaspora is huge.
Lol I'm Yoruba 🇳🇬✊💃💪🎉🎊
+Its Kami Cool! I'm 19% Nigerian, but I don't know which tribes (likely one or more of the main tribes, I suspect). xD My 3rd-Great Grandmother was from Guinea though (she was likely Fulani or Mandinka). I would love it if they could do a video for all these tribes. Africa is so diverse.
Why didn't you do the Netherlands? :(
+Valkyrae In terms of population, Japan is the world's 10th biggest country. The Netherlands is the 65th.
+Valkyrae It would be basically the same as any other Western country. Like most rich European countries, the Dutch simply copied the American trends.
+Valkyrae i think germany could pretty much represent the netherlands
+Valkyrae Because the world doesn't revolve around white people
+TheGidding That would probably be the only clear deviation from American trends indeed.Other eras were basically the same, hippies in the 60s and 70s, short bobbed hear in the 20s etc.
Can you do Cambodia?
+LindaR5 yass !
Are you both Cambodian?
Agreed!
+Elyse Ηok Yes, I'm Cambodian :)
Elyse Ηok Me i am !
20년대가 이쁘네
80s looks like Yamaguchi Momoe or Matsuda Seiko
If I'm not mistaken the behind the scenes video for this said that Matsuda Seiko is the inspiration for the 80's look. 😄
+Joshua Takahashi 70 amazing
Seiko Matsuda, yes! It makes sense since she was THE biggest idol of the 1980s.
+amesakurako1 Hmmm...I like 70s...Yamaguchi Sayoko
1960's is giving me Japanese Ariana Grande vibes and I love it!
omg cute Ganguro makeup! Love that you included the more "intense" styles
0:09 holy shit that shot is beautiful
