This playback brilliance is attributed to David William Hearn who came over from Staffpad and lent his skills towards making MuseScore a real contender in the composition software sector. For anyone who doesn’t have access to real orchestras, I’d have to say MuseScore is a revelation. I’ve written more concert works in the last 3 years than the previous 30.

@@Pauldelnevo the expansions are quite reasonable compared to how much they cost for staffpad back in 2020. Each library was $140 CAD. I’d like to see Abbey Rd orchestra find its way over too but that’s a long way off since SFA isn’t close to finishing that line yet.

Great work! The new Musescore update is quite stunning. I have a feeling you've never witnessed this piece performed live. When one does, and it is performed as Ralph Vaughan Williams scored it, it is intensely moving. He scored it like many of Tallis's works would have been performed in Tallis's day: in a "cori spezzati" fashion. Tallis's "Nine Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter" (1567) were often performed this way in a large cathedral with large forces. "Cori spezzati" is a divided choir. The choirs are placed on opposite ends of a performance space for an effect that is very stunning. Vaughan Williams scores the soloists to perform in the center while Orchestra 1 is situated on the far left and Orchestra 2 is placed on the far right of the stage. I suggest panning your Orch 1 and Orch 2 instruments to near 100% left and right respectively to emulate this, so it adds the contrast and depth Vaughan Williams requests. When one witnesses this live (like I have), one never hears this piece the same. In fact, no recording does it justice. It must be witnessed live to gather the full effect. The last time I saw this live, I had the pleasure of watching Nicholas McGegan conduct it. I also had the pleasure of chatting with him about it personally that afternoon. It was an awesome day for me as a musician! Good stuff Paul. Keep up the good work!

Best regards, MaxT
@maxtofone Thanks for taking the time to check it out, I had a lot of fun making this one! That is a fine result from sampled voices. I would tell anyone who has only heard this piece in recordings to not pass up a chance to hear it live, on a proper stage with the proper separation of the choirs. It is an effect that no CD, stereo, quad, binaural or whatever can really capture.
@robcat2075 thanks for your very kind words mate, I couldn’t agree more, live is always better than a recording...that performance at Gloucester cathedral was stunning, it’ll stay with me all my life mate.

@maugre316 He’ll and thanks for taking the time to check the video out mate, and this time I think you’ll find it much more stable..they’ve worked wonders since the last update mate
For slow and cinematic string passages musescore is really wonderful, but what about fast works or brass and woodwinds? here so far I prefered Noteperformer (but did not check M 4.4 yet)
@gerdprengel7616 I think it sounds fantastic on everything I've tried it on, but for the next video, I'll use a faster piece, with brass and winds, so that you can see what you think. I love NotePerformer too (but prefer the original sounds, over NPPE's) so in the next ones I'll include NotePerformer playback (using Sibelius) so you'll be able to see which ones best. Kindest Paul
Hi Paul / Is there any reason why you didn't input the piece into MuseScore in the first place ? Do you think Sibelius is easier to use ? Excellent post! R.
@russellaustin8453 Thanks for taking the time to check the video out mate. I’ve been working on this piece for a while..so it’s not a new score, that’s why I imported it from Sibelius as an XML file I love Sibelius, and until recently used it all the time for everything..once the playback stuff is set up, it’s now possible to automate everything (just like Dorico) and playback is brilliant..but here’s the thing ..with MuseScore..it just works ..without any tweaking (or a tiny amount of hidden dynamics etc) and is quicker to get a wonderful finished mock-up. I think of it like NotePerformer 2.0! Sibelius is still better at engraving, so I’ll probably use both bits of software..but I love VSLs stuff..and sometimes it’s exactly what the piece I’m working on needs, so if your interested in knowing how it works in Sibelius, I can do a video of that if you like..as Mir pro..Vienna ensemble (everything VSL really) works perfectly in Sibelius..and not yet in MS.
But is the score "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" available to download for free? In order to check this out inside the music notation software options available (say Dorico and MuseScore Studio), you certainly need the score that is probably the MusicXML and pdf of the score and even better the score in Dorico format and also the score in MuseScore Studio. If you have them, please provide them, as it is now music in public domain. Thanks for sharing your exploration with this video, it is really interesting.
@kingsleyowhonda hello mate..apart from making sure your using the latest version 4.4.2 and that all your samples are up to date by checking for updates in Muse Hub i really don’t know what the issue may be, if updating doesn’t fix it..perhaps check out there forum or support pages on there website, or send them an email. I have found there support to be great in the past and I’m sure they’ll help you get it sorted ASAP
I agree that it sounds amazing, but there are still a lot of playback glitches and inconsistencies that I've noticed. The most common seem to be an instrument playing out of tune (or missing a note, usually flat by a decent amount), and timing being extremely far off (usually a note being late, often by more than an eighth note). I can work around them, and it's still an amazing option for someone like me who likes composing but hasn't learned the details for getting the right playback in other programs, but I'm really hoping they get those fixed at some point soon. I ran into both of those types of glitches earlier today when I was writing a pretty simple violin part, and they existed in all of the violin options I looked through in the mixer including both solo and section.
@circuitgamer7759 Hi, I have to say that I don't get that with the Berlin stuff, they did do an update a little while ago fixing some of the timing issues, and since then its been great (for me..with the style of music that I write, that tends to be on the slower..more lyrical side of things). Are you having this issue with Berlin or the Muse Strings..as your most welcome to send me a copy of the score so I can render it in Berlin for you..It'll be completely confidential mate, if it's a sensitive score. Kindest regards. Paul
@@Pauldelnevo I'm having the glitches with Muse Strings, plus a bunch of the other Muse Sounds libraries (strings and brass seem to be the worst for glitches, but all of them have them). I'm on the newest version, and it did help some things, but there's still a lot of this kind of glitch. I haven't tried other libraries past the Muse Sounds and the basic ones, mostly because I don't feel like adding that layer of complexity when I'm still figuring out the composition skills themselves. I'm not at a good enough level with my writing yet that I would need perfect playback even if it would be nice and helpful. I wrote my comment just to point out some of the flaws in the current version that come with the otherwise amazing playback. Thank you for responding by the way, most channels seem to tend not to respond to comments over a day after release, so that was nice to see :)
@circuitgamer7759 If your on the newest version of Muse Strings, the timing issues should have been fixed in a past update, but now I know which ones your using, I'll have a look at them myself mate, as luck would have it in working on a score of a string quartet, so can check it out. Honestly, updating the sounds via Muse Hub doesn't add any complexity at all..I mean none!..EVERY daw and notation app should look at this and be like...yeah..in 2024 thats how it should be done!. Don't put yourself down about your writing either mate, we all started somewhere..and I'll take a bet that what you've written is lovely..and much better than you think..as if life has taught me anything..it's this..You are your biggest critic (when it comes to your own music compositions) I have a feeling your better than you think mate...thanks for the kind words about the comments. Have fun with the compositions..kindest Paul
@@Pauldelnevo If you want to you could directly see what I've made so far, I've been uploading the best ones so far to my channel :) I might try some other sound libraries later if it doesn't add much complexity, so I guess I'll see then. For now I need to get back to sleep, I just woke up mid-sleep for some unknown reason...
@MonkeyBars1 Thanks mate for taking the time to check it out and comment. I’ve looked at the score again, and it gets close..very close..but I don’t think it clips. It didn’t clip the meters in my screen capture software either..however..I didn’t export the audio to a DAW to meter properly, and the mastering plugin may be hiding things..as the setting is just one dial..(that i kind of like!) I’m planning to do a follow up to this video soon, with other samples to compare, so will defiantly check, and if needed amend settings etc. Thanks again mate Kindest Paul
That's not the ending I'm familiar with, is this the original 1910 version? It does sound great in general, though I would say the ending does seem a little sudden and lacks a sense of having "landed" as it were. Perhaps just a tiny rall. and more of a diminuendo?
@wizdofaus hi..thanks for checking the video out mate. No, it’s not the 1910 original..but one input specifically for the film. I’m still working on it..but once it’s completed will be on my website to download and check out yourself. Kindest regards Paul
So, as far as I understand, the upper and middle parts of each page aren’t using MuseScore Sounds but are from other sound libraries, correct? Only the lower five staves are using MuseScore. The three sections are quite similar, with some tweaks here and there. Initially, I thought the purpose was to compare each section and eventually show that the lower part-exclusively MuseScore Sounds-was the best. However, at the end of the video, all three sections are played back simultaneously, and that is presented as the exclusive glory of MuseScore. How is that?
@turquisestones Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. This piece by RVW uses 3 different string ensemble sizes, a string quartet, and two string orchestras, 1 is a chamber size, and the other a larger one. I used different samples to get a feel for different string ensemble sizes. The score is played back simultaneously, as that's how the piece is performed live..so it's not about showing how one sample library is better than another in this instance, but how good the playback is from Musescore with hardly any tweaking at all (ok..some dynamics etc) but that's it..no Midi CC automation. Kindest Paul

Hi Paul / Is there any reason why you didn't input the piece into MuseScore in the first place ? Do you think Sibelius is easier to use ? Excellent post! R.
@russellaustin8453 Thanks for taking the time to check the video out mate.
I’ve been working on this piece for a while..so it’s not a new score, that’s why I imported it from Sibelius as an XML file
I love Sibelius, and until recently used it all the time for everything..once the playback stuff is set up, it’s now possible to automate everything (just like Dorico) and playback is brilliant..but here’s the thing ..with MuseScore..it just works ..without any tweaking (or a tiny amount of hidden dynamics etc) and is quicker to get a wonderful finished mock-up.
@MichaelJustGreat, Thanks for watching. The score isn't ready yet, only the intro. when its finished, it'll be on my website mate

My Musescore Studio 4.4 is producing a distorted sound and tempo lagging. How can this be corrected?
@circuitgamer7759 your music's great mate...I checked it out this morning..got a new sub mate 👍
Thanks, sounds great! But are you sure you're not clipping the master out during the loud bits
@MonkeyBars1 Thanks mate for taking the time to check it out and comment. I’ve looked at the score again, and it gets close..very close..but I don’t think it clips.
It didn’t clip the meters in my screen capture software either..however..I didn’t export the audio to a DAW to meter properly, and the mastering plugin may be hiding things..as the setting is just one dial..(that i kind of like!)
I’m planning to do a follow up to this video soon, with other samples to compare, so will defiantly check, and if needed amend settings etc.
Thanks again mate

That's not the ending I'm familiar with, is this the original 1910 version? It does sound great in general, though I would say the ending does seem a little sudden and lacks a sense of having "landed" as it were. Perhaps just a tiny rall. and more of a diminuendo?
@wizdofaus hi..thanks for checking the video out mate. No, it’s not the 1910 original..but one input specifically for the film.
I’m still working on it..but once it’s completed will be on my website to download and check out yourself.

@@Pauldelnevo Got it. Thank you for the prompt response!
@turquisestones No worries, have a good one mate
Also, is it possible for me to get a copy of this Musescore file somehow? I would love to analyze how you were able to achieve this level of playback.
@stevhard thats shouldn't be a problem mate, as I'm currently building a new website for this and other things!..so if want, your most welcome to pop over to my website www.paul.del-nevo.uk and put your email in the box..don't worry, I'm not going to spam you, I'll just give you a heads up once the sites live mate

What are _realistic_ minimum hardware requirements to use these libraries without issue?
@Bsktimp Hi, I don't know mate!..I didn't even look but I'm sure that will be on there site. For reference I use a 2017 i7 iMac with 32 GB ram and it's not a problem mate
I use an Acer Aspire 3 with a 1.8GHz pentium silver processor, and 4Go of RAM. It works fine
i downloaded the 4.4 but its broken. my musescore hasnt worked since friday and im losing my mind. discovery of this software a year ago literally turned my life around, now its been yanked away. im awful with computers too so i cant see how im going to fix this.
@RyanHannaMusic Can you uninstall it, then try reinstalling it again?..or perhaps give support an email to get some help mate. Whatever the issue, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you get back up and running ASAP mate
@@Pauldelnevo im talking to mr musecafe himself - ive uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and its loading up the same way each time. ive downloaded versions without musehub, ive tried repairing the broken install, ive entered command code into my new £1k computer specifically bought for running MS4 that im scared of wrecking because i dont know wtf im doing
@RyanHannaMusic just a thought, but have you installed a beta version?..if you have you may need to uninstall that too then re-install 4.4. I’m on Mac and I needed to do that with an older v4 version as I’d installed a nightly beta build to have a look and it mucked a few things up. If it’s not that..then I’m not sure what it could be mate
@@Pauldelnevo depression has turned to hate now, thats a week ive been dealing with this, my pc has loads of downloads of musehub and im actually sick fckin typing about it and the problems, wtf have they done? hahahaha
@RyanHannaMusic mate, I don’t know what to say..except that I really hope the support guys get you up and running ASAP..sorry I can’t help more mate
Logic is only good for rap and hip-hop these days. The notational features suck and they will eventually upgrade you out of support for your 3rd party instrument libraries.
@hb3801 I agree completely. I once thought when Logic finally updated their articulation sets, that Apple would put some effort into the notation side of the software..but I really don’t think they are bothered that it’s not been looked at for years..I’m just so glad other options are available!
Thanks for commenting, and for taking the time to check the video out, I appreciate that mate
