  • NOT QUITE A TUTORIAL - HOW I MAKE SHACKLES FROM COPPER WIRE
    ALL LINKS AT THE END OF THE DESCRIPTION!
    Hi guys, it took quite a while to finish another video. I‘ll show you why in a vid I‘ll try to release as soon as possible. It‘ll be a perfect example of how life‘s getting in the way again and again!
    In part #2 on Dan‘s and my M4 HST buddy build I mentioned that the kit‘s shackles can‘t be used. The moulds were misaligned and if I had removed the seam lines and tried to sand the parts into shape there wouldn‘t have been much styrene left.
    Initially I didn't want to scratch build them, so I looked for aftermarket shackles, but couldn't find any matching ones. They were too small, too big or they simply had the wrong shape. I had no choice but fabricating them myself. After all it wasn‘t too complicated, so I took the chance to make them and do a short „How I“ video about it. I hope you can use it, because there are more things you can do with this technique.

    Jens I always get something from your videos! My last build I wanted to add shackles to the rear of my custom bumper but didn’t try. This video was a day or two late as I entered it yesterday in a local show. Good news is, in spite of no shackles, I still won 1st in my category 😀 I do know that this is something I will really be able to use on the next project I will be building. Thanks you’re the greatest!

      Steve first off congrats on your 1st prize!!! That's really great! Thanks a lot for your kind words. It would be a fantastic compliment if you used this for your next build. That's the reason for doing vids like this. Sharing ideas, saving money and hoping to encourage fellow modelers, that's what it's all about! Again thank you very much, my friend! :)

      Thank you so much, Scott! Neither did I, but it became necessary, because the kit's shackles look terrible. It's just repairing things, hehehe! Good luck and take care, Jens :)

    Very impressive, Jens. I'm always in awe of your abilities to manipulate objects (and even drill into them!) at such a small scale. The end result was really worth it, though! - Trevor

      Thanks a lot, Trevor! Before doing it for the conversion of the Tamiya GAZ-67B (still under construction!) I didn't know if it was possible to drill into copper wire, so each bit of scratch building means learning new stuff. I really appreciate your kind words. Jens :)

      Thanks a lot, Mark! I'd be glad if you could use it! Hope you are well. I must admit that my girlfriend and I aren't and the reason for it is worth another video. I hope I'll be able to upload it tomorrow or on Tuesday. Here's a hint: We've got too much water and it isn't where it belongs.

    Thanks Jens. A simple but effective solution. I often break plastic shackles which need a lot of clean up. Would clamping the copper wire, holding over something hard and flat, then using a metal punch and small hammer work to flatten out the ends?

    • @non-prolific135thscalemode7
      @non-prolific135thscalemode7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot, Harry! I broke them too many times, but it took me over 40 years to find this solution, hahaha! I'm sure that your idea would work. If I had a hammer... I mean such a small hammer, I'd check it out. There's a small envil on one of my two vices and it would definitely be hard enough. :)
      EDIT: Anvil! I guess an envil is an "evil anvil", but that wasn't what I meant to say. :)

    Very nice my friend I'll have a go at that .I have just got those resin 50 cal so i will be interested in what your going do with them. I hope things are improving on the house front and things are drying out

      @non-prolific135thscalemode7  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much, my friend! I wanted to watch your unboxing of the 50 cal, but I didn't get round to it. My review could be online for at least two weeks now, but for the reasons I talked about I didn't have the mojo to edit the voice-over yet. I will use one of them for the HST and keep the rest. I'll order the AFV Club 50 cal set now, because I want to compare them to the resin ones. The pics of the sprues I saw were very nice and if they're as good as they look like I'll stick with them. They are much cheaper. :)

      Thanks a lot, Paul. :) Hope you're well, too? For the time being we're living on a construction site. Our landlord caused a major leakage and we and the neighbour from below have wer walls and floors/ceilings. I'll do a video on it, so you can see what's going on here.

      Thanks a lot, Michael! I was forced to do this because of the terrible kit shackles, hehehe! We have a massive water damage here that keeps us busy, but I guess everything will be dry again in two or three weeks. I'm glad that my hobby room wasn't affected.

      Your house was flooded???

    • @non-prolific135thscalemode7
      @non-prolific135thscalemode7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly the house. Our landlord "repaired" the outlet of the washbasin in our bathroom eight months ago. I wasn't happy with it, but it appeared to have worked. Two weeks ago the neighbour from below had a small wet spot under the ceiling of her bathroom. A couple of days later it has become a giant spot and water was running down the wall! A plumber came to look at the damage and what he found was devastating. The "repair" was the reason and water must have seaped through into the wall right from the beginning. It accumulated in the wall for almost eight months and then it broke way. I'm working on a video about it, but this much: I've got two radiators and a pump in my room since Friday. My room and the bathroom share this wall and it's wet and went mouldy. The pump is removing water from under the screed and the amount of water must huge! I can see the water, because it's a transparent hose. Our neighbour also has two radiators in her room and you can't imagine the noise! I recorded the voice-over for this and the next vid in our living room - the only silent place in our apartment! I'm mad at the landlord, the former landlord I shall say. We've got a new one since yesterday. It's a very long story and I guess I'll mail you later. It's too much for this comment section.

      Crickey!!!! Well you have my sympathies Jens.

      I'm hoping the same. The new landlord is a step forward. The plumber who fixed the damage took a couple of pics and I just saw that he posted them on Instagram! We're on our way to fame! :)

      April 6,m 2019---Actually, got interested in 3D printers back in late 2017, then in 2018 there was Luke Towan's (RR buff) video on the Anycubic Photon 3D printer. After looking at other 3D printers, decided I'm buying the Anycubic this year. REALLY impressed with his 1/87th scale office chair printout. Since then, have done A LOT of looking for FREE 3D printer files and currently have around 500 or so. Think I've found 4-5 different sites offering free files. Yeah, there are that many that I can use.....for my future zombie/apocalypse dioramas in 1/35th scale. Mail boxes, kids wagons, furniture, weapons (swords, shotguns), etc. Last year I scratch built a childs wagon, then made a silicone mold of it. Used a hypodermic needle to inject silicone into the mold....and only got ONE good wagon our of 4 castings. And still needed to add wheels & a handle to it. With a 3D printer, make one print, then make a mold of that item for additional resin copies when needed. One guy I know sent me a 1/35th scale portable generator with the handles to pick it up being about 1/2 the diameter of a pencil lead. And this was printed as ONE piece. Thingiverse is one of the sites. Also have 4-5 dozen files for figures, but not quite what I want. The people are walking normally or have their arms stretched out to their sides. Looking for people running, screaming, etc. which is why I bought another computer as I want to learn how to use the making human program along with learning how to use CAD. Remember how VHS tapes & machines were REALLY expensive for a few years, then dropped in price? Same thing with DVD's/machines. I really believe 3D printers are going to be game changers for all modelers. From what I understand, one company prints out figures in 1/35th scale, then makes a mold of them, casting them in resin. Don't think it's Black Dog, but another company which I think is now producing figures in China this way. And with a computer program for the figure, you can always change the legs, arms, etc. without having to scratch build a new, same exact figure. One program w/12 zombies is $18. I buy the same exact figures in resin, will cost me around $100. And let's forget 3D scanners and their potential. A guy on TH-cam printed a 1/35th scale locomotive in 3 sections and it looks outstanding and this is using a monofilament printer. Yes, that's one of the files I've downloaded along with a passenger car, boxcar, flatbed and caboose. I really liked Trumpeter's WW 2 German train stuff, but how long before they come out with American or British stuff in the same time period? If ever. Imagine a couple of passenger cars at some train depot loaded with G.I.'s going off to war? And wimmen....NEVER can have too many women to chose from. Learn to create your own women and no more being stuck in the 1940's/1950's. Of course, I'll probably be called a sexist by feminists, but don't care. ;-)

      That is really interesting! If I should ever have the money to buy a 3D printer I'll get back at you for further information. I guess such a printer will be the future and change many things for modelers and especially those who are into scratch building. :)
