So I was going to watch the NIN countdown but I went for this 1st since it’s less of a time commitment. It was quite a good watch, loved your input and how your rankings differed. Frank’s fondling of his vinyl was amusing!

Right on. Thanks for watching The Furs ranking. I think this was the first one that Frank and I did together. Glad you enjoyed!

This was fascinating. Also a long-time fan, since hearing 'Heaven' back in '84. Interesting to hear you both speak about Book of Days - I've always struggled to get into this album. Listening again with new ears, I can appreciate the raw sound and the guitars but I think beyond a few songs (Shine, Should God Forget, House) I still struggle with the lack of melody to latch on to. And Richard's lyrics are at their most abstract here.
But that's what makes these rankings so interesting - the different responses and attachments we have to certain albums.
Nice to see Mirror Moves at the top of your list Bret. I also think that World Outside is a relatively unknown gem. I bought the reissue in 2018 but unfortunately it was the mis-pressing and the vinyl as actually Book of Days... So I'm still without a vinyl copy.
    My rankings would be:
    1. Mirror Moves
    2. Psychedelic Furs
    3. Talk Talk Talk
    4. World Outside
    5. Made of Rain
    6. Forever Now
    7. Midnight to Midnight
    8. Book of Days
Now to look at the song rankings video...

Hey Matt, thanks for sharing your list and thoughts. It's a shame about the World Outside mis-press. I had no idea that was even a thing until Frank mentioned it. I guess I lucked out with my copy. It was one of my most sought after albums and was thrilled to get a copy. I remember getting a Best of Culture Club / Boy George CD years ago and when I popped it in, I was like... "wow, I don't remember them being this heavy." Turns out it was Pantera on the CD. Hahaha. Bizarre how those things happen. Anyways, great to see Mirror Moves at the top of your list and World Outside ranked high as well. As I said in the video, this was probably the most difficult artist to cover. I really love all of the records. Thanks for watching!

Awesome video, Bret and Frank! Talking about each of their albums really makes you appreciate how great their catalog is! Even more impressive is how strong Made of Rain is with such a long gap between albums.

Thanks for your thoughts on these wonderful albums. Being a Furs fan since day one I find it hard to go past their debut. When it came out it was one of the most original sounding albums of its time. Butler’s voice and the power of the instrumentation was just wow! It’s not surprising that the first album you guys heard from this band stuck with you…that’s the impact they have.

    • @BretHelmsLifeOnThisPlanetBlog

Hey Brett, right on. Excellent that you've followed since their beginning. As you said... Butler's voice is incredibly unique and instantly recognizable - and the instrumentation was like a punked up Roxy Music in a way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Loved your ranking video. Nice that you both listed your top three songs from each album as well. I just finally saw them play last year in St Louis with X opening. What an amazing show.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the album ranking. There is a playlist linked in the description that compiles my 3 song picks from each album. Great that you got to see them with X. The Furs have toured with some cool bands over the years. I remember seeing X with Rage Against the Machine, P. for Pyros and Robyn Hitchcock back in the early 90s.

great show, Frank and Bret. Your insight into the Furs' work is spot-on
and passionate. MADE OF RAIN is so damn good; that would be my number 1 album. Hats off to you both!

Mirror Moves is my favorite album paired with seeing that tour in 84 (and I still have my concert tshirt!). The band entered the show in a stage of fog and lights. Truly fantastic. I am a fan of all their oldest stuff and started following them around 1982.

Glad to see so much appreciation for Psychedelic Furs "Book of Days" album. I've always loved it, and it gives me goosebumps when I listen to it still to this very day. Apparently the band had some mixed feelings later on about the album, and seemed to have disowned it. Additionally there was some reportage that there were some motions to have it removed from their catalog? I'm guessing that they probably had a lot riding on it at the time, and it did not meet their expectations as far as how it performed sales wise. However, thankfully the fans have weighed in over recent years regarding "Book of Days" and it seems generally regarded (and justifiably so) as a career highpoint for them. Side bar: I would love "Made of Rain" but I really miss not having John Ashton's guitar work on it.

What a great dialog about the Psychedelic Furs. I still go back to 'Sister Midnight' on their first album since it just got me in to feeling their was a post-punk world out there to explore. I saw them here in the Philadelphia area last year, with X as their opening act. They still have a high energy performance style, and the saxophone is the lead instrument in many of the songs. I do need explore so many of the albums on your video - thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I prefer the track running order of the US edition - the one we showed in the video with the red cover / band photos on the front. It kicks off with "Forever Now." The green cover (UK) starts the album with "President Gas." Either one would be great for the collection, but I prefer the red cover.

Love all the albums, such a hard ranking to do,I’m in the uk so president gas has always made sense to me, remember back in the day when they played it on the old gray whistle test and his Mike dropped at the beginning, look it up on TH-cam , every time I hear it I hear that drop! I’ve been into them from the beginning, seen them many times back then and now. First heard sister Europe on the peel show , it actually made me feel sick, in a good way, and sent for it mail order, one of the best bands ever.

I'm not a big fan and only have greatest hits disc and Book of Days. BOD has cool guitar textures but is pretty raw. Wasn't that album a commercial flop basically? Always see that CD used in shops. I still enjoyed this video. 🙂👍🏻

      @BretHelmsLifeOnThisPlanetBlog  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Chris. Yeah, I don't think Book of Days did that well commercially, and is probably unfamiliar to more of the casual listeners - maybe the same goes for World Outside. Both of those, as indicated in the video, are excellent in my eyes (ears). :)

I’m a huge Furs fan and I have yet to get into Book of Days. I’ve given it several tries over the years, and still it’s yet to stick with me. I don’t like to say I dislike certain music/albums, especially within the genres and bands I gravitate to, but I do believe that I’m not quite ready for it. I’m waiting for the day that I’m ready for Book of Days.

I'm a huge fan from the beginning. I'm 2 years older than Richard Butler so post punk is my jam.. I love Mirror Moves, Forever Now, World Outside (totally underrated), the first album, and Made of Rain. Picks on the others. Lots of fave songs. Love Love Spit Love and LOVE Richard's solo. Love Shine from Book of Days. Valentine, Get a Room, Don't Be a Girl, In My Head on World Outside. From the 1st, India, Flowers. Made of Rain, You'll Be Mine, Wrong Train, No One, This Will Never Be Like Love. Just some highlights. Love Spit Love, It Hurts When I Laugh, How Soon is Now. Richard Butler, all of it but I LOVE California. Mirror Moves-Ghost in You (my #1 overall), Here Come Cowboys, Highwire Days.
