Those brass bits are just splendid ! Mix that with the bass line, and you have a banger. Splendid choice !

I might be wrong but im quite sure this song is about a girl who lets her friend meet her boyfriend who then steals him

This song is such a vibe until you hear "I can't stop the loneliness" and you immediately drop down to the floor and cry.

If I remember correctly, the producer said that he arranged this song in the style of The Stylistics' "Can't Give You Anything."

(English translation of the rough meaning of the Japanese lyrics)
    I Can't Stop The Loneliness
Now I just can't stop feeling the sadness.
    I Can't Stop The Loneliness
I just can't stop feeling this sadness.
I still regret introducing that girl to you.
I knew it, you two were sympathetic to each other from the moment you two first met in the late afternoon on that Caffe Terrace..
I got an unexpected phone call from her.
"I'm sorry, please leave him," she said.
    I Can't Stop The Loneliness
And then I just couldn't stop feeling the sadness.
"You've only got it all wrong," he said, smiling when he heard it at the time.
But your kiss at the day had the smell of a lie
And when you held me in your arms,
I knew for sure that your love for me was already gone
Your new love was like a little storm for me that came over me.
Cause it took away my girlfriends and my lover from me at the same time.
    I Can't Stop The Loneliness
    I really want him back,
Now I just can't stop feeling this sadness.
    I Can't Stop The Loneliness
    Someone save me,
I just can't stop feeling this sadness.
Tetsuji Hayashi, the composer of this song, is the composer of such hits as Miki Matsubara's Stay With Me - Door at Midnight, Kiyotaka Sugiyama and Omega Tribe's Summer Suspension and Summer Tales for Two, Akina Nakamori's North Wing, Momoko Kikuchi's Glass Meadow, Graduation, Junichi Inagaki's A Dozen Excuses, Mariya Takeuchi's September.

Could you listen something more on the side of pop/rock? 80's japanese music has a great variety of styles and a tot of the classics aren't exactly city pop related.
Some hugh artist from the 80's are Akina Nakamori, Shizuka Kudo, Chisato Moritaka, Miho Nakayama, Yu Hayami, Naomi Akimoto, Yoko Oginome, Minako Honda. Just to name a few!

I love Anri -san and this "Timely" sooo much. The first song on this album, "Cat's Eye", is the theme song for the same title animation "Cat's Eye". When I was a kid, I really liked this.
*Cat's Eye* is a classic Japanese anime about three sisters-Hitomi, Rui, and Ai Kisugi-who run a café by day and operate as a mysterious art thief trio by night. They steal art that belonged to their missing father, hoping to find clues to his whereabouts.
    I wrote too much…
As for the tune *Cat's Eye*, I prefer the arrangements in this anime.
