These areas are the surviving high ground after the last big melt of the ice age. This used to be hills in a large landscape. Dry land from west of Ireland to Russia and beyond. The Thames in London used to meet the Rhein in a big lake where the English channel is today. People retreated up as the water kept rising. They still battle it in the Netherlands til this day.
I had the idea that this site was like an older version of the oracle of Delphi. A newer version of Gobekli Tepie, the evolution of temple sites used by people who use narcotics to bring on visions that give premonitions to people who traveled to the site to ask for guidance. The stone balls could be a representation of hallucinations represented in stone. As soon as i had the thought i started to think of lots of contradictory things against it but interesting to think that this could be a precursor to Greek oracle sites.
