Great info on the non toxic epoxy coating. I have a similar plunge and I have been struggling with trying to keep my water clean for more than a week at a time.
This set up was great for a while. I had the space between the planks leak twice. The second time I decided to bail on the set up. It think it could work but I didn’t want to have to keep repairing. I learned a lot from the process. Ultimately I decided to pick up the insulated ice barrel 300 from costco for $1000. I love it! I was able to use my chiller/pump set up. It was very easy to transition. Btw, Anyone on the fence about the ice barrel…go for it. It’s a beautifully made purpose built product. The insulated versions are impressive. It holds the cold really well.
Questions: shot out to you! Your making videos and inspiring me to reproduce what you have done!! Thanks! What is the aqua pump you use, 800 means 800gph? Is it harmful to expose yourself to the tannins from the wine barrel? Do you use bromine tablets and other jacuzzi chemicals? Is there any harmful to the body not treating the inside of the barrel? I hear running it through a filtration uv tank is an option from pump and from uv sanitization to chiller. I'll likely cure the inside as you have, but I might plunge with the raw state of the wine barrel untreated before I am able to.
Yeah I am curious how are you treating the water? I am considering buying a uv filter. To run from pump prior to water chiller. Have you found a need to sanitize the water?
How has the epoxy held up over time? Im curious because i had the same idea but i know the water is what makes the wood swell and i figured if the water wasnt contacting the wood it would eventually dry out and leave gaps. So im wondering if you've had any leaks as time has gone on!
I think you are right about that. I did notice that after a while some leaks did form between the planks. I use the barrel outside, so this didn’t create too much of a problem, but I did have to reseal it to keep it holding water. I have been looking at a better insulated option…but the cost still seems too inflated, so going to keep using this for now.
How long until the plastic epoxy smell goes away? I did the clear epoxy on mine and it made the water smell pretty bad. Been a week and changed water twice but still has that plastic odour

This is great, thanks
What saw did you use to cut the lid nicely?

Great work and how many quarts of epoxy did you use?
Brilliant video. Would be better with some more info on the chiller stuff

Great video and what filler are you using?
I wonder if your coating is going to cause the staves to dry out and then fail to stay water tight
Interesting. I had not thought of that. So far there is no leak or separation…will keep an eye out

That’s strange. You used “pond shield”? For me the smell was going after a day.
Yes
How many gallons is the barrel
225 / how many litres you have in a gallon
That maths out to 59 gallons, so probably the 55 gallon nominal
Do you cut the power to everything while plunging? Specifically the pump?
Great info!
how tall are you?
5' 10"
