in peralveolar, wire engages both cortical plates. In transalveolar it engages only one cortical plate as you can see in fracture fixation

gunning splints are commonly used to treat edentulous mandibular body fractures...procedure is same...circummandibular wiring done at two places one on each side of fracture ...maxillary splint is fixed with peralveolar wiring

1.not suitable in fractures with excessive displacement i.e. unfavourable fractures
2. they may lodge food debries and produce halitosis
3. they may provide unstable fixation if fixation technique is not correct
