  • In 1996, Boulder, Colorado was rocked by the mysterious death of six-year-old pageant queen, JonBenet Ramsey. Two decades later, director Kitty Green returns to audition local actors, unpacking how each remembers and relates to the ill-fated Ramsey family. A darkly moving exploration of crime, guilt and personal bias, Casting JonBenet expertly blurs the lines between documentary and drama. Now streaming exclusively on Netflix.

I feel that what people forget most of the time was how young Jon Benet really was. Watching these child actors who are most likely around her age interact with getting their hair and make up done really shows how a much of a child she was herself. The pictures shown in newspapers always showed her in the whole pageant attire, with a wig and make up, acting much older for the photo but when in reality she was a first grade girl. RIP

This movie is only understandable for those who are familiar with Jon Benet case because it's about the 'casting process' and not the actual story. Some of the actors are really good & it's interesting to see how we interpret the same thing differently, but the story's just flat.. Poetic & different, but it doesn't give me the emotional upheaval like I imagine. The actress who played Jon Benet maybe only has 5 minutes screen time in total.

The brother did it, probably sexual abuse that'd been going on for a while, took her down to the basement so no one would hear, tried to hold her down and keep her quiet and injured her pretty bad, and either he or the dad (who he came to when he realized how bad he hurt her) came down and finished her off and tried to cover it up (the screwdriver and blood and tape and rock/brick thrown from the inside, come on)...
They chose to protect him against all odds and the mother didn't want to ruin their glowing reputation in their town, and we all know she was jealous of and didn't have her daughter's talent, so she helped write the over-detailed and illogical ransom note, overplayed the grieving mother, didn't show true care...
The family purposely fucked up the crime scene, not listening to commands, then first moving the body and then laid on top of her dead body and blanket to get their DNA on her so no one could tell...
The detectives did shitty work and were probably paid off, the father couldn't keep up his pathetic act, but the family was rich and had too much to lose (despite losing their daughter)...
So the family chose to keep quiet "bc of their lawyers or the trial or their grief", raising further speculation and attention, and then did weird media crap (NEVER w/their son until he was on Dr. Phil just a couple of years ago and made it completely obvious he did it)...
There was no other evidence of actual suspects (including the patsies that tried to take the fall and claim infamy), and everyone made it way too obvious they were hiding and faking their grief and in it for the attention and pity, still to this day, and the rest is infamous history.
    To sum this up:
Poor little girl never stood a chance with that family.

i completely agree with you ! even if it was someone outside the house, patsy & burt was awake because of the dna found on the pineapple bowl. everything that they tried to cover up didn't go with the story and it just made them even more of a suspect. i believe that they killed jonbenet and got away with it.

Your theory first came to my mind...although I strongly disagree about a mother jealous of her own daugther who was just 6, that was just crazy imo, and also about her dad or mom seeing her half dead or badly injure and decided to finish it themselves. I just think "brother did it by accident and parent covered it up." But again I have heard/read/seen many crime that seems so obvious...but wasn't really the case. I mean *innocent* people has been on death roll for crime that so obvious and point directly to them. What I'm tryin' say is that we will never know who actually did it - could be anyone in the family or not of the family - and the real truth might forever be unsolved.

      From Rotten Tomatoes
"20 years after the highly-publicized and unsolved murder of JonBenet Ramsey, a casting call for young actresses to play the late child beauty pageant queen serves as the basis of this documentary by Kitty Green. Then it turns out that seems to be what this documentary is actually about - the impact this murder had on the general consciousness, and the ghoulish interest people have in turning a real murder into a fictionalized drama. All those little girls auditioning for JonBenet - it's chilling. Sign me upppp

And how the hell does any of this help document the facts of the murder itself? It honestly seems like an excuse to blur the line between fiction and documentary either way.

As much as I love true crime shows etc., I always feel a little torn about them. Like yeah, making them and putting them out there in the world brings more attention to cases and inspires more people to work together and find out the truth. And yet, I can't help but think that the line between that and big movie companies (such as Netflix) taking advantage of the popularity of these cases and throwing salt on an open wound is thin. Maybe in this case the family played a part, but still...

The evidence was so flawed and inconclusive to what the family said had occured. The parents had lost two children now why lose their last? Now is it just me or is it a little bothersome that people keep milking this child's murder for money. Nobody can bring her back and nobody can be charged. Boulder police failed this little girl.

It was different than I thought it would be. It really wasn't about the case, but more about Acting/Casting and how it was and continues to be sensationalized by all of us & how that & the different potential portrayals have on how they/we view the case. It has the reciprocal nature of the backstories of the actors and then how their portrayal paints the character, that's interesting! So... it was maybe marketed differently, but I actually found it pretty interesting as the fact it wasn't really Yet Another Coverage of the case didn't bother me. It's a way more interesting way to tell the story from an adjacent perspective. It's a bit surprising that it was entitled Casting JB, as that of course seems to mean Casting the film, but Most of us would read that as casting the actual character of JB, which it really had nothing to do with. I'd be curious to read about the discussions about how to tone and market the film. :) I'm also curious if these were all genuine responses or what kind of guidance was used to get these people to share what they did. Like wtfuck did flogger guy just happen to have his stuff on him? That was weird; who brings that to an audition of a child sexual assault and murder?

t very sad that you love “dark tones & music”... what you think that comes with? Happy endings? Happy lives? Of course not! It’s a contradiction in and of itself... u are attracted to darkness because the light is not in you! Don’t be concerned, over 95% of the American population is with ya.. that’s why they are referred to as “the walking dead” or “useless eaters” by the “elite” who own & rule this earth... look up henry Kissinger & what he said about military men.. said they were just pawns used in a political game... a game! People lives are just a “game” to those who wear suits & ties, who get up on TV & spew nothing but LIES.... enjoy the filth! It will all come to an end soon enough!

Here's what I understand about this, the parents said repeatedly, "We will do ANYTHING to protect our children," note children, not jon benet not the son. Listen to the 911 call, we need a- help... you need a what? An ambulance? Here's some fun facts for ya'll and I will let you decide, because considering I have a large family this makes sense to me.
She had pinapple and milk still digesting, that was a snack on the counter left out from the brother when they came home that night, also on that counter was the flash light (Which had been scrubbed clean inside and out including the batteries) If your little sister (whom you have had a history of hitting, and hating because she was mamas favorite) wouldn't you be mad she snuck a peice of your snack? Testing shows that a kid could totally have the strength to crack someones skull with the flashlight, and unfortunately it wouldn't have been enough to kill her, but she would be effectively brain dead. Then you have the two holes in her back, they fit the train tracks from the model train in the basement, if you just hit someone and they stopped moving, well a kid, wouldn't you poke them or jab them to see whats going on?
There was no intruder, the father broke the basement window getting in before because he had locked himself out, and in the crime scene photos there is a spiderweb that had not been disturbed and had someone come through then the leaves and everything would have been moved. The note was way way way to long, and would have taken hours to complete, and it was hours before they called the police about the note, it was written in a females hand ect.
If you would do anything to protect your children, and your son killed your daughter, you still have one kid, and after having lost one already I'm sure your priority would be to save the other.
So what killed her? Whoever wrapped the cord around her neck and set her up in the basement. Why kill her and then place a ransom note, it was a distraction. Who found the body? The father wanted to "double check" and lead a friend right to her. I think they thought she was dead and in staging the murder, they accidently killed her.
Being a prominent family, well off, and influential the police gave them alot of leeway and turned a blind eye, where if this had been a black family or poorer ect, the parents would have been convicted.
If you take into account as well the father had booked a flight that morning, and that theytook months "off" from the case of "looking" for their daughters killer, and came back stronger than ever, I think they were getting their stories straight.
BUT hey, I'm just calling out a few of the things I noticed, I'd make a terrible lawyer, but I am just putting the peices together and speculating, considering I have alot of exp. with dealing with children, plus I have common sense. Don't even get me started on casey anthony...
