    Haha, the only pet I'll get that will benefit from my house being 80 degrees! My gecko's heating mat gets a little too hot because the resting temperature is high, axolotls are hard to keep cool, but for hedgehogs? Just right!

    Thank you so much for doing his video, I jus got my hedgehog yesterday and the breeder said I just needed a heat lamp, so that’s what I got... but the temp is not consistent, so I set out to search what I could do! So I really appreciate this!!

    I have one guinea pig (please do not hate on me I had two Guinea pigs but one passed) and three hamsters. I am highly thinking about getting a hedgehog. I am prepared for mess, smell, high-maintenance (as my guinea pig is all that plus a drama queen), and also it being nocturnal (I have three hamsters. Hamsters=nocturnal) Also I am fine with feeding live bugs, handling pointy quills, and a potentially unsocial hedgehog. I already have a small guinea pig cage collecting dust in the basement (it’s way too small for guinea pigs but probably okay for hedgies) I have hermit crabs which have a heat source (a heat pad) so probably my parents would be okay with me getting a heat lamp for the hedgie. I have an exotic vet ten minutes away, which I take my piggy and hammies to in case they get sick.
    You guys made it to the end! What do you think??? Should I get a hedgie? I would prefer a male because 3/4 of my small animals are females (and I’m also okay with seeing masturbation, lol, I’m used to it, I bred my hamsters once so I saw it)
    Also, is cat food a good option for them? If so, should I get dry or mushy? Good brands? Tips would be nice! :)

    Hey, you're videos are so informative, they've really helped me with preparing to buy my hedgehog! I live in Japan and picking up my hedgehog this Sunday!! I'd like some advice on heating the cage pls ~ I know the CHE are a popular choice but i cant find any available here (Japanese brands) and not sure buying American brands like the ZooMed etc would work properly since the volts output is different here or would using a plug socket adapter be ok? What seems to be available and used here is red light heat lamps (this is what they are using to heat the cage at the moment in the pet store I am getting the hedgehog from) or I've also seen heat panels which attach to the ceiling of the cage. Which option do you think is best for heating a wired cage (with plastic base) and least costly to run? The heat ceiling panel is 60w but states it gives same amount of heat as a 100w bulb. My cage is 70x44cm and looking to buy an M size panel (25x22cm), the L size is super expensive to run apparently! I plan to use fleece bedding and hides to help keep it warm and have already bought a thermostat and thermometer to regulate the heating too (I just need to get the lamp/panel heater sorted a-sap now!). Any advice would be appreciated, thank you! :)

      You 100% percent still need a thermostat because you still need to know the temperature I would suggest still getting a heat lamp and a thermostat.

    Okay so I live in Arizona. I don't own a hedghog, i'm just doing research. I understand the heating for when its cold. Now our house gets around 80 degrees(in the summer), and our house doesn't hold ac, but we found other ways to cool down the house, so its no problem. Would you still need the heating in the summer, or do you turn it off?

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could likely just turn it off. :)
      My house also gets around 80° in the summer and I just leave it plugged in and the thermostat keeps it off. That way if for some reason it does cool off in there it’ll turn on on its own.

    This video talked me out of getting a hedgehog, not in a bad way though, you see, I have two chinchillas (along with pigs and a bunny) and, as you may know, chinchillas don't handle heat very well because of their dense fur. I also don't really have room anywhere else but my room where the rest of the pets reside. After hearing about how the lamps warm a room, I realized that an animals welfare is more important than me getting one because I think it's "cute" (although I have been doing lots of research) anyway, thank you for helping me decide if this was the right pet for me

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +My Tiny Zoo The lamps don't warm the room, the space heater does. But that is an incredibly responsible decision! We wanted chinchillas incredibly bad, but made the same decision, that having a hedgehog and chins at the same time just wouldn't work for us.

    • @mytinyzoo5202
      @mytinyzoo5202 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PugPibbleHedgie whoops ! that would make more sense, but yes, for the time being I feel like the responsible decision would be to hold off on getting a hedgehog (also, I hope you have a nice day when you read this)

    I'm making a cage for a hedgehog out of a IKEA desk (piggypigpig cage idea) wish I could add pic to show, but would a heat light be safe with acrylic(also want to know for my turtle tanks future basking area lol)? Where would I put it since it will be two levels?

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lilly Holden The lamps won't melt the acrylic but it would be best if it doesn't touch anything that isn't metal. I would look into panel heating designed for vivariums rather than CHE's, personally.
      ProHeat makes some designed for pets.

    Will a CHE set up work for an open wire cage? I got a rabbit cage with a plastic bottom for my hedgie and and I'm worried that it's going to be too cold even with the CHE.

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Desiree Robinson It depends on how warm the room they're in is. Wire cages don't hold heat well so the surrounding area needs to be decently warm. You can modify the rabbit cage to hold more heat by covering the wire sides if need be.

    I understand why it is bad for a hedgehog to go into hibernation and would never let mine do it willingly... But out of curiosity do you know why that if they do go into hibernation they cannot just naturally wake up ?

    • @breebree218
      @breebree218 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Pol they don’t have enough fat stored and don’t prepare for a hibernation so basically they’re just sleeping without food or water and slowly dehydrating themselves. Don’t quote me but I do believe that’s why.

It's pretty big size of a walk in closet and that's where his wheel is, and I leave the cage open at night for him to go in and out as he pleases. I just got him and didn't really realize the heating issue, so I am going to get both heater and heat lamp - winter will be here soon!

    My house is about 75° and I have a 75 watt red heating lamp directly on top of his cage. Is this okay?! I’m a very new owner, only had him 2 days! The lamp is also emits a red light when it’s on... and I’m supposed to keep the light on all the time. Will this mess with his light schedule? I put a blanket over his cage at night, with the lamp over top. Is that good enough? Can anyone give me some tips? I really want him to be happy and healthy.

    Wpim thinking of getting one son and I'm a bit confused...when you say attempt hibernation is them rolling up into a ball a sign of it or is it natural? If I took it out of its pen for 30-40 minutes to play and cuddle with would that be okay? and on warm summer days lik 70-90˚ F could I bring it outside if they want to for as long as I want??? ah so many questions sorry!

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Emily Carlson Curling into a ball is natural, it is when they become unresponsive that is the issue. Such as them being curled up and refusing to unball completely and not responding to your touch. As well as being wobbly when they walk, cold to the touch, lethargic, refusing food, etc.
      Yes, it is recommended to take your hedgehog out for bonding every day.
      90F is too hot for a hedgehog. If you're taking it outside, it should be only when it is around 72F-80F. No warmer or colder :)

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chocolate Puffy Depends on the average temperature in the area the cage would go. You need a thermometer no matter what to monitor the temp. purchase a thermometer and set it in the spot the cage is/will be and keep an eye on it :) That should give you some general idea.
      I always recommend a heat set up though - it is far more reliable than the typical fluctuations of a home.

      +Lauren King Nope, heating pads only heat the floor of the cage and not the ambient age, which a hedgehog needs. They are also incredibly dangerous if they short circuit and have given hedgehogs second and third degree burns. A heat lamp or space heater are your best bet for heating. :)

      +Carol W I would go for a ceramic heat emitter. Costs a little more initially but is significantly less on your energy bill so it will save you loads in future bills.

      A 3 tier cage for a hedgehog sounds like it might be a safety hazard, hedgehogs should really only have one level, in which case the heat lamp will go on top.

    Love that you have a lot of love for your hedgehogs, I however, think your cages are much much too small. I assume you have an external playpen they are in most of the day or maybe you let them run around the house all day? Even Pigmy hedgehogs are little trotting scavengers all night, and can go several kilometers a night in search of grubs and fruits….I have a setup you may like to see….

    Soon to own a hedgehog for the first time. This is the best video I’ve found on heating but have a question. My house is usually cold to be comfortable so what happens if my CHE bulb goes out while I’m sleeping or at work and the hedgie is without heat for possibly hours

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William Cohen For people that spend extended periods of time from home, I typically suggest having two lamps in order to have a backup. I just check the bulbs daily and replace them from time to time, though CHE set ups have a long lifespan.

    • @cohenwaevo

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William Cohen You can run them together on a thermostat, which will keep them at a level temperature so that they don’t overheat the cage.

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Riley No, a CHE only heats the space that it is directly over. Also since you like it cold, I would recommend only using a bin cage. Wire cages will be too hard to heat in an already cold room.

      Keep a very very close eye on the temperature till the thermostat comes in. If the cage isn't staying warm enough, you may need to turn down your houses AC.

    My step mom just got me a hedgehog two days ago, it was in a small cage like yours but my room is usually 60 degrees. She got a small uv bulb that emits light 24/7 the thermostat usually is about 70-74 directly under the light. Recently the lamp fell and I made her let me put my hedgy Luna upstairs where it is much warmer but when I tell her we are doing this wrong she says that this is what the breeder told her. PLEASE REPLY SO I CAN SHOW HER THIS.

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      UV bulbs are definitely not recommended, they mess with their natural sleep cycle. The bulbs they should have are ceramic and they only emit heat, no light (:

    This video is very informative, thank you! I'm from the North of England and as you can imagine it gets quite cold. The breeder (from whom I'm getting the hedgehog) does not use a heat source however I am as I personally feel it is too dangerous not to. I am worried that the Hedgehog won't be use to the heat or it will be too hot, how will I be able to tell if it's too hot for him?

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to purchase a thermometer and a thermostat with your heat lamp, so the thermometer will show you if it is too hot (you don't want them over 80°F) and the thermostat will control the heat lamp to that is will turn on and off as needed :)

    • @YunoMe3
      @YunoMe3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PugPibbleHedgie Thank you :) I was just wondering as I seen another video where the hedgehog preferred the cooler side of the settings while another preferred it warmer. As the hedgehog I'm getting isn't use to a heat source, should I start of using the cooler side of the recommended temperatures? Obviously keeping an eye on him :)

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +YunoMe3 Sorry, not sure why I didn't see your second question! It is possible he may enjoy the cooler side of the spectrum, yes! I would start at about 74F and go from there. :) 74 gives you some wiggle room to see what he personally prefers.
