It’s the drone effect. On some tracks on Loveless, I swear I can hear chord progressions from English choral church music I used to sing as a primary school aged (descant) chorister in the 1960s. There were around 40 voices in this little village church choir. They’re probably all gone now. Virtually nobody sings this way in England anymore. It was transcendental then and now. Only mbv accidentally takes me back there, over 55 years ago and I’d never once thought of it until mbv in 2024, though I’ve listened to Loveless 100 times.

its not pre-grunge, grunge already existed in Seattle in the late 80s. That it wasnt commercial/mainstream yet is a different thing
