- I know it's very different from my usual content, but I really wanted to share a story regarding how I've had to deal with racism and personal experiences with feeling like an outcast. I hope you can watch this video and walk out of it with something that helps you out in your personal life, especially if you're a person of colour.

the end really hit me hard. as a Algerian Muslim with pale white skin and freckles, i feel ashamed that i don't resemble my culture. my school is mostly filled with arab muslims, so i got made fun of for not being darker. i always drew characters with dark skin or tan skin, because i had envy towards them. but this video taught me that i shouldn't have to hate my skin, because no matter what i do or how i act, it will never matter what i looked like. I am Muslim and i'm proud.

Being an overweight pale filipina girl who's not only that but also the biggest lesbian you'll ever meet was a "reason" people did bad things to me and a "reason" I did even worse things to myself emotionally and physically. Man, this really hit right into my heart. As a Bangladeshi who spent 5 years in Japan as an elementary schooler and now 4 years in Australia as a uni student, I really felt like I was not fitting well into any of the culture. I feel so lucky that I never truly faced racism but I did hear someone saying 'he's too Japanese' in a condesending way back in my own country. I am glad that I found this channel and would love to see more of your content !

I’m Indian-Bengali but I’ve never been treated as harshly as Maaz. I have never thought of the idea of hating themselves because of their skin. I'm Asian American.
In elementary, a teacher chastised me for "eating dogs and beating women".
Nearly a decade later, she contacted me in hopes that I would speak to her class since I had graduated in honors.
I declined, listed off why I hated her, and finally took a stand for what both her and my peers had done to me so many years ago.
Edit: forgot I made this three years ago. The teacher was placed on admin leave after she made some questionable Facebook posts about drinking on the job since she taught kids. I don’t know if she still teaches, but her Facebook is deactivated and she no longer works with the school district.
I could relate a lot too. I'm Mexican American and my family is Hispanic.
In Elementary, all was good and I got the best grades, I won our schools spelling bee (even our district spelling bee) I read the most books in my grade. It was all well
Until middle school, there were so many racists and especially teachers who would openly speak out lashing out people of my ethnicity and especially my Language Arts / Theater Teacher, she was horrific. She preferred anyone who wasn't of Mexican descent (our school was mainly 52% Hispanic, 48% Asian, 10% White. She said she endorsed Trump and anyone else was wrong and how Mexicans were useless and how we were disgusting. She said these things hidden though as if she thought we couldn't understand what she really meant. She kept me out from the play production we were putting on and only accepted the lighter skinned people. I begged for her to give me a part but she ignored me every time. One day I had to go to this peer mediation meeting with me and other students and I was the only one in her class that was in it so I asked her if I could go and she said no and to sit down. Furiously since this meeting was important I grabbed my things and said something along the lines of No you racist witch. (May I remind you that I was a goody-two shoes and I never disrespected teachers) My friends in that class went "oooohhh!!!!" And they clapped as I left the room.
Do I regret it? No!!! I'm glad I'm not in Middle school anymore with that bruja.

I am an Indian, I haven’t ever lived outside of India, but my relatives who do, face the exact same problem. Despite the fact that my family despises Pakistan in general, I see how the people there are just that, people. They face the same issues we do. The government might be broken, awful and unlawful, but the people are just as brainwashed about us as we are about them. For the first time, I felt so connected to a Pakistani guy. This has genuinely given me a new perspective. I have and probably will continue to condemn the behaviour Muslims in various countries show, but I promise to never associate their acts with a whole religion. This has opened my eyes so much, just beautiful.
@@jahnavidhir8113 Despite all the anti-India/Pakistan rhetoric, the thing is, once you leave South Asia, doesn't matter if you're from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. The west and far east will see you as brown. That's about all that will happen. That's why personally the most unity I've seen between Indians and Pakistanis has been in foreign countries where there is less exposure to the home country.

I grew up as a child bullied for her skin colour and teachers, classmates , friends .. there were so many of these people who kept hurting me by saying things as if only if i were fair they would acknowledge me as a normal person. Now i just feel so scared of even meeting people fearing they will call me out not for who i am but what i am not.

As someone who is pakistani and basically got ripped away from their culture, I'm so glad you spoke up about the racist jokes. Sometimes, I've heard terrorism jokes even from close people and it's too difficult to say anything. I am a student, and being the only person of colour hits hard whenever racism is brought up. I relate entirely. As a young African American male, I’m constantly pretending to laugh at racist jokes. It really hurts. It’s not just jokes about my skin, it’s joke about me in general. I make fun of my looks, and personality. I joke about my love life. I talk bad about my religion. I bring my negative traits to the forefront, and it’s starting to take its toll. My boyfriend literally made his game characters white for 3 years even though he's black. I talked with him about it he said he was ashamed of his skin as well.. I'm just happy he's proud of his color now~ ;w;

I assumed you mean characters for a game he's working on. As far as character creation in games like Dark Souls (just cuz I breath the game at this point) 1/7 is black, 1 Asian, and 5 white people. And I did it that way because it's easier and they have hair that matches the character I'm trying to put together.

My daughter does the same thing. She's only 7 and it broke my heart when one day I asked her why she made her roblox character blonde haired and pale skinned. She said "So I can be beautiful!".
I told her she was beautiful too and should make it look more like her. It took a bit to convince her and this whole situation took me off guard because I've always made sure to tell her she's beautiful and never even thought that this would come up so early in her life.

You are seriously my all time favourite TH-cam animator. It’s not only how funny I think you are, but also how relatable. I myself am a half Éthiopien half Swedish girl who is also brown. In all the years I’ve been in school so far have been like this. As soon as I first got to my class almost everyone was white, I felt very out of place. But there was this one girl who was sort of light skin (half Jamaican half Swedish) who I immediately got attached to. Me and her were always there for each other which felt amazing, the only problem was that we were exactly like you. We joked about our own race calling each other and ourselves slaves, criminals and the n-word. And again, it was only because no one else could do it first. I mean of course even if we did joke about all the things people think the brown community is like our classmates as well could scream the n-word if we walk by or just say it to our face. Every time some white dude in our class said the word another white guy in their group would run up to us and ask if we heard what the other guy said, what do you expect us to do instead of just awkwardly laugh it off? It’s also frustrating when they ask for the “n-word pass” every time we have a conversation. This one time a dude in my class who’s also brown (I think is thaïlandaise and Swedish) sat normally at his desk while we were about to watch a movie. When a guy ran up and turned off the lights an other dude screamed so everyone heard “WHERE DID (brown guy in my class) GO?!!” and then everyone laughed. Both me and my brown girl friend looked at each other and then at him who was awkwardly laughing with them. It’s so frustrating to hear and so upsetting to see this happening to us. Plus when we read about historical facts and about slaves everyone always cracks up and looks at us three. (Where the only brown people in our class)
Last thing is that this happened not long ago but me and my brown girl friend have sadly become distant because we couldn’t cope with our depression together and ended up toxic. It’s been hard these couple months and now I don’t have a friend to relate to and talk to about these things. That’s why I’m happy you brought it up and it always makes me so happy to see this video. 🤎

I’m black and I feel like an outcast 24/7 it’s chipping away my mental health at this point. I don’t like rap music, I don’t like anything spicy, I watch anime, I like watching Dreamteam and I constantly get bullied for it. People repeatedly ask “why are you being so white?” and “act more like your race” and I really can’t fucking stand it. I’ve once forced myself to eat takis and I was sick for days. I want to be normal so badly, I want to be more like my race but I don’t know how to change myself.
This hit really close to home for me. I'm biracial, with a white mom and an Indian dad. I spent most of my life in Texas or Michigan suburbs, and for those of you who don't know, the areas I grew up in weren't exactly a world village. My dad and I were the only visibly nonwhite people on the block, because of I was the only one of my other two sibling to get some melanin in my skin. I never saw anyone like me, and when I was younger, the only time I saw people that looked like my dad was in the second Indiana Jones movie, which did not help me fit in at school. From preschool to right before 5th grade, I wanted to be white so badly. I wanted fair skin, lighter hair, and a smaller nose. I wanted to look like the characters on screen. I wanted people to stop asking if my dad was a terrorist. It took me a long time to stop thinking like this, and to be proud of my dad's side of the family. You, sir, are and inspiration to everyone. I'm glad you made this video, and I'm happy that you are comfortable enough to share this part of you. As an aspiring animator, I want to be as brave as you one day.

I haven't had issues with my "race" because I'm native to the country I'm living in. But I did experienced bullieng for many, many years in school.
Because of that I know that if you are an outcast, people will watch every step you take and every mistake you make.
They are laughing about answers you got wrong, when you are suppose to be "smart", spreading rumors, taking every angry or sad moment that you can't hide, excuse their own horrible actions with combinations of lies and actual mistakes you made and claim "he/she deserves it.", talking to other people that they should stay away from you, trying to persuade the few friends you have to end the friendship with you, ... claiming I paid my first boyfriend after we came together after knowing each other for a year, making you drip, taking away you stuff, destroying your drawings, drawing a Hakenkreuz on your bag, kicking, throwing rocks, pure drinks on you or your stuff... I had it all.
I know when you are an outcast there is nearly nothing you can do.
They'll always find excuses why you "deserve it" (I hate that sentence).
Try to make them laugh? They'll laugh about you and than laugh at the joke you made after someone else repeated it. Try to learn with them? They'll claim you are too clingy.
Just wanna enjoy your break by reading alone or in a place where the worst people don't show up? Now you are isolating yourself.
Be with friends? They are as weird as you (which is true but in a good way). Be alone? Yes no one wants to be friends with someone like that.
Be silent? The weird quite kid. Be loud? Attention whore.
Be kind? You fake it. Be aggressive? You deserve it. Be sad? You are a looser. Be smart? You are probably a bootlicker. Be dump? Yes totally fits.
It.. just hurts... what people need is a slap in their face. Something that shows them that the way they treat you is wrong and it actually harms you.
Sometimes I was successful with that. But most of this people didn't stood up against mobbing.
When I grew older I started to protect as many people as possible. I stopped a fist fight between two groups of students, I called of two boys who were making fun of a little girl. I stopped people from spreading rumors and told them that there are different ways to let out steam and making up stuff about someone just in order to feel better does more harm than good.
Criticizim, assumptions and lies are obviously three very different things but people and especially children and teenagers still confused them with each other when they think someone is annoying, arrogant, agrressive etc..
But it's important to learn that difference.
It can help people out of that crossfire. It can make people stop looking for the next thing they can excuse their own bad behavior with. But this often doesn't reach many people. So they grow up, often oblivious to how much they hurt you.

i LITERALLY CRIED DURING THE ENTIRE VIDEO. It's so horrible that many people (Including myself) can relate to this. I used to be bullied in Middle school because I had the best grades in my year, and I am brown-skinned. I used to ask myself 'What is wrong with me?!' and cry until I fell asleep almost every day. Nowadays, I look back in the past and I know there was and there is nothing bad with me. I'm perfect just as I am.
So if you are struggling with bullying, because of your race, your beliefs, your look, or whatever thing I just want you to know that you are perfect as you are.

This really hit me. I may not be Muslim but I am a sri lankan who is a Buddhist. Racism was own of the major reasons I was bullied when I was younger and it still happens everyday. Sometimes when I was younger, would have some wacky conversations with my mum when shopping. While doing this, people gave us weird looks and I was wondering why. I thought it was because I was talking about some weird stuff but my mum said “its because of how we look.”

I've spent my whole life (now in high school) trying to figure out how I should present myself, as a Muslim American, or as a so called "ABCD" (American Born Confused Desi). I love my roots and my culture, but I lose my social life in school as a result of it.

Hi Maaz, I’m a Chinese teenager living in Spain. I also have brown skin, my appearance didn’t gave me any problems, but everything changed when covid came. Now some people look at me when I walk on the streets like I’m a monster. I saw a dog in the street and I smiled to the dog because I like animals, but suddenly the owner came and told the dog “don’t be near her, she will eat you”. I want to clarify that eating dogs is definitely an uncommon thing in China, I never met anyone who has ever eaten a dog. But if I did, anyways, insulting a random Asian due to the eating dog fame we have is like a musulman insulted an English person because they eat pork. Now I avoid going out because I’m afraid people will see me and say bad comments like that.

As an afghan Muslim, I agree. many times I CANNOT wear my cultural clothes outside because people would pull their kids away from me, and all the kids my age would stay away from me and call me weird.
Another thing is that in my old neighborhood I was young, and I was always sad because the moment I went outside, the parents would call their kids inside. I thought something was wrong with me and was very sad. sometimes the kids wanted to play with me, but when their parents saw them talking to me, the yelled at their kids.
The problem was, it wasn't like this before. before I was good friends with them, until one day they saw me wearing cultural clothes on Eid.

i truly love this video. as a half-indian half-pakistani american AND muslim, i genuinely felt more like i was in the middle; like i wasn't westernized, but i also wasn't as connected to my culture. for example, i understand both hindi and urdu but can't speak it as well since my accent sounds a bit funky, i have cultural experiences my friends and others couldn't relate to so i would poke fun at myself like purposely mispronouncing my own name (emaan) and making bomb jokes to made sure i would fit in, and on top of it all i felt honestly a tad bit disconnected with islam; i always had my faith, but i never truly felt like i was being quote, "a good muslim." however back from when i first watched this video, i have changed so much. i started to become more connected with these parts of my identity and i even started to preach it because of how proud i am of my own progress. i'm glad there are more south asian people to look up to in media, especially mazz; he's at the top of my list.

As a Spaniard who lived in Mexico for some of my childhood and was severely bullied every word in this video touched my heart. I've been through all of the things you speak about and I felt less alone.
I apologise to everyone who has been through anything like this. I am a white person and the hate I see towards people of color is horrific. And the fact I was even brought up to think making fun of people's races and cultures was okay and normal. I'm so lucky from a young age I saw that it deffinatly wasn't OK. I was bullied and outcast just for the things I liked or the way I dressed and that hurt me. So whenever I saw someone being bullied for something like color which no one can help I always stood in and stood up for those who felt the harshness of others. I will continue to help those who need it and reassure people they belong no matter their race, religion, likes or dislikes and even the way they dress. As long as your a good person with good intentions you will always belong, f the racist homophobic people who hurt people. Thank you for sharing your story.

I agree. It adds variety. If everyone were white, or if everyone were any one, single color, where's the fun? I like variety, and I want people to embrace it, not be ashamed of it. It hurts me to hear that people still, in *2020,* deal with racism and feel unsafe, and/or like they have to hide themselves away, never, or not for a while, coming out and being their true selves. Well, it actually often comes from a deeper root that just difference in skin color. It is related to a lot of cultural phenomena, and the example that the video gave is pretty explanatory: this woman was stern and racist towards Maaz because she had a bad conception of Muslim people as a result of an uninformed generalization, and she held an unfair grudge against them because someone she loved died. Of course, this isn’t how it is supposed to be, and, in my own opinion, racism is a serious issue that constantly maims society’s integrity. I just wanted to shed light on the reasons why people are racist, because it isn’t as simple as just skin color.

What I don't understand is why people are okay with it, and refuse to realize that we are all the same race and what sets us apart in the current world is just some tweaks in our genes that made us more adaptable to the different environments our ancestors traversed and decided to reside in centuries ago--and ergo, made us "different" from one another.

This really hit me. I’m not Brown, but I grew up in a very religious town and I’ve known I was gay ever since I was in 6th grade. I have felt like an outcast my whole life. I was told multiple times that being gay is a sin and that I would burn in hell if I was. My school is super religious too and I’ve gotten bullied multiple times for my sexuality and I did the same thing as you, I went along with the jokes or fought back (Sometimes literally). My parents kicked me out and I live with my uncle now. I just want to say thank you, for being so open and making me not feel so alone 🤎

I personally try my very best to look at myself and think what are the positives and idk if this helps but you are made of generations of genetics, all of your ancestors are a little bit of you in a way so loving yourself, your culture, your background and your bloodline is kinda complimenting hundreds of people and idk but that kinda makes me feel just a bit better in a way
