    Thanks for the video Doc! I am going to order a dial indicator and you helped me understand the inner workings of my own bike better for when its time to upgrade my cams. The heat expansion and mixed metals is a wonderful tip and mixes in history as well, that knowledge helps when talking to people who know their stuff. Great video Doc.

    The aluminum case expands more per degree than the steel camshaft, so endplay *increases* as the engine heats up. I shoot for .005-.008" on the camshaft endplay, and check it with a depth micrometer at the end.

    • @video-dispatch8309
      @video-dispatch8309 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Out of curiosity, how did you verify that the case would expand that much? Wouldn’t it be safer to shoot for the absolute minimum of the factory range, especially since Harley offers a fairly wide range of acceptable play to begin with?

    • @patrickzambori473
      @patrickzambori473 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@video-dispatch8309 the coefficient of thermal expansion is established matter of physics. How much it expands is irrelevant, but aluminum expands more per degree of temperature increase than steel, that is a fact.

    • @josephtese5037
      @josephtese5037 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patrickzambori473 Wouldn't it matter very much how much it expands? Because until the engine is warmed up enough to reach the minimum allowable end play, you are running it too tight until then. That's all I'm wondering about. By the way, I'm here to learn and ask questions; there is zero motive in me to sound critical or challenging.

    • @patrickzambori473
      @patrickzambori473 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The steel cam cannot expand as much as the aluminum case does, so the endplay of the cam is only going to increase as the engine heats up. @@josephtese5037

      Thanks for the suggestion. There are plenty of “how to” videos out there. The Harley-Davidson Service Manual has great instructions but if there is a particular procedure unclear let me know. Thanks ~ Doc

    Requesting a new topic. I have some high speed wobble on my 1988 FLHTC Electra Glide Classic with 32,000 miles. Can you address replacing motor mounts / isolators? I assume they need routine replacement on newer Harleys too. Any comments about the after market motor mounts / isolators that are supposed to cure "Harley Death Wobble?"

      Have you checked your head bearing preloads? You need to adjust them every so often

    How many miles should cam tensioners last on a 2014 Ultra Limited FLHTK with the 103 cu in engine? My bike has 105,336 miles.

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no set mileage from the factory. I would look and inspect with that high of mileage. Thanks ~ Doc

    DOES THIS MEAN ANYONE CAN SWITCH TO GEAR DRIVE ? I WAS TOLD IT ALWAYS DEPENDS ON THE CAMSHAFT OR is it CRANKCASE RUNOUT. SO YOUR SAYING RUNOUT CAN BE CORRECTED, SO ALL MOTORS CAN SWITCH IF THEY WISH TO GO TO GEAR DRIVE CAMS ? I WENT S+S GEAR DRIVE MANY YEARS AGO, TO ELIMINATE this TENSIONER ISSUE

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Run out is different than Cam endplay. Not all motors can run gear drive. Maybe I should do a video on run out? Thanks ~ Doc

      @Alan Whiteside what's the cost difference when you might use 1 time in the life of one motor. Someone who regularly is installing cams verses someone that might do this repair once or twice. I've turning bolts on autos, bikes, and boats for 55 years. I have plenty of tools. If your good you don't need every gizmo that comes out. My garage is only so big.

      @3percentMick How do you know whether people are doing this? With TH-cam videos I think more and more people are working on their own bike's. Any video by Doc is great and getting to know more about how your HD works is always a good thing. Just saying.✌️

      @@3percentmick705 actually I have been watching videos about cams for a few days because I am having a upgraded cam and cam plate put in my 04 flstfi and pipes, this winter. I find that all his videos I learn more and more about how my motor works. So when I have to bring one of them to the shop because it's not running right, it's nice to be to talk with my mechanic and have some understanding of what goes into fixing my bike and why it takes X amount of hours to fix. Anyways I appreciate all his videos
