- We finally poured the ceiling slab, It was today in the morning :) it was nice and calm pour unlike the ground slab during the summer heath where we almost didn't make it because of how fast the concrete was setting. In this video, you can see a lot of concrete work. We poured the posts and walls three weeks ago and we mostly did the form work and rebar in the last weeks. Weather is slowly moving from summer heath to autumn rains so we get less and less sunny days. We just hope the house will be under the roof by Christmas so we can do interior work during winter. The rebar meshes we used were q503 for the tension zone and q207 for compression zone with some aditional bars where needed. U shaped rebar was 10mm. Rebar in beams was 16 mm tension zone and 14 mm compresion zone, number of bars depends on the length of the beams. We still have to pour the compression zone of the longest beam, it will be done in a couple of days while the concrete is still new. Soon we will come to the wood part of the build:) but before, just another floor of brickwork. Please be patient:)

This is one of my lie-in-bed-and-dream/plan books. Also very practical, with good descriptions and illustrations. I have carried it down to my project and referred to it while working. There is no overhang for rain!
Thank you. You can never go wrong wrong with Mozart. Lovely to hear something not played incessantly. I seem to recall playing this about 50 years ago in a youth orchestra, where I played the flute. There also nothing that cannot be improved by the introduction of a cat.

Just to clarify something for the people that are not from seismic region or Europe. It is common to build a house that lasts at least 50 years, so you calculate it with probabilistic method of occurence of loads in thet period (wind, snow, seismic...well seismic load is 475 years probability of occurance). We do not sell our house in ten years. You live to see your grandkids play in it.

Meh, Europeans rightly stopped building 'castles' over 500 years ago. Once gunpowder entered the equation castles were just stone reserves awaiting demolition.
Same with all the masonry used in this project. One RPG or Katuysha rocket and it'll come down.
Plenty of evidence still in Bosnia and Croatian Krajina.
In Europe we love bricks and concrete , it lasts longer and doesn’t squeak ;) … building with wood here is done because it’s more budget friendly

there is not so much rebar in each house. Not sure about the region, but it looks like an overkill to put that much steel inside. anyway it depends on the calculations for the slab loads
It depends on the seismic area, we are in a highly seismically active area, we had a couple of big earthquakes last year so rebar is calculated accordingly..

I was really worried about the concrete unmixing at the bottom part of the high columns and walls, but I was pleased to see such a nice and clean result.
Job very well done!
The vibrator helped to work out the excess bubbles from the aerated concrete mix to produce a smooth wall finish.

I've been very surprised by what you're building so far and because you specialise in glue laminate timbers i really expected to see that process in your build but so far it's been mostly concrete and blocks!!! Hope further along the glue laminate is coming into your build!!! As always guy's 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
Yeah, there will be glulam used later on.. roof, glass wall, stairs and the whole ventilated siding will be wooden.. If it was as originally envisioned, it would be just glulam and concrete.. Unfortunately the prices for rebar and glulam more than doubled so I had to make an almost new project..

If you were to build this house in California, it looks like it would tumble down the hill during an earthquake, intact, to come to rest in a new location but otherwise unaffected :-)

@@lignumchannel I saw an engineering presentation about findings from the great Mexico City earthquake that led to a lot of buildings collapsing (in 2010 or 2011?). The conclusion was that a LOT more rebar was required in columns and walls to withstand torsion and shear effects from earthquakes. Proposed amount of rebar was even greater than what you have. However, Mexico City is built on thixotropic soils (lake bed silts) which liquefy (lose all shear resistance) during earthquakes, hence the need for a LOT of reinforcement.

It’s so fascinating to see how in different parts of the world build houses due to the climate of each region...it’s a great learning tool to watch the different method techniques and materials used....great content guys....building a house is like how long is your string as to budget restraints as in this build looks expensive....
I also enjoy looking at different building methods from around the world. This house was originally meant to be build in glulam and concrete but as the prices of rebar and glulam doubled, I had to find different solutions..

@@lignumchannel Hello, I just saw your video of the securing of the steel frames of the steps to the concrete wall. I am curious as to the source of the term "console stair". I would have called it "cantilevered stair" since each step is supported at only one end. Also I am curious about how you managed to avoid damaging the wall reinforcement when drilling the holes for the supporting bolts. Did you consider casting support plates or rectangular tubing with welded extensions into the wall? This is a method that I have seen for precast concrete panel attachments. The drill and epoxy method does look fairly quick.

there is enough rebar to pile up a skyscraper on top... was there any calculation done to justify that (e.g. for displaying a collection of Fenwicks on the first floor...)?
This is not a uncommon amount of steel - this is seismic zone.
He is just making very sure the house stays in 1 piece.
I'm just following the amount from the main project. This is quite active seismic area and last year we had a couple of big earthquakes nearby with 6+ magnitude so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Is this being done by your family and friends, or is this a professional crew? They seem to know exactly what they are doing, but also seem very casual while they do it, and many different ages.
My fiancee, dad, brother, brother in law, friends, and when there has to be a lot of us, guys from the workshop.. We are mostly in wooden structures business so this concrete and brickwork is a bit new to us but it's nothing we can't handle.. :)

Curious to know wont the brick crack if you use the brick as soffit for the beam and no actual gap is between the beam and the brick meaning once the beam is fully load and it deflects?
