    Nice to see Big Bird from Sesame Street make an appearance in this special. I wonder if his inclusion in this is a nod to the Sesame Street Special that was on VHS , "Big Bird In China ".

      Big Bird in China aired in 1983, 4 years after this broadcast, so obviously not. However, this special may have inspired that one. Edited to add that I just looked it up. According to Wikipedia, Caroll Spinney (who played Big Bird) came up with the idea for Big Bird in China after doing this Bob Hope special.

    I think what I love best about specials in this era is that the lineups feel like the result of a game of Mad Libs and/or pulling names out of a hat.

    You can see in these spots where Kentucky Fried Theatre got the roots of the "Argon Oil: We're working to keep your money." spot in Kentucky Fried Movie.
    Oh wow. And "I'm a DuPont chemist" *has to be* the backdrop for "Zinc is Important".

    I love the Coca-Cola commercials in this volume. They feature what IMHO is one of the most underappreciated, but still great, jingles that Coke has used over the years. I had pretty much forgotten about it until I started watching these volumes from the late 70's.

    • @baylinkdashyt
      @baylinkdashyt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That second one starting at 5:14 is sure as heck the Campaign spot for this jingle, isn't it; I didn't remember the full length version of that.
      [ Nope; I anticipated; most of the Coke spots in this are that full-length jingle. Love the chord progression in that... ]

    Kind of sad they don't really do specials like this anymore.

    What an epic special that must have been I wonder how they managed to fit it all in 2 or 3 hours!
    Referencing an earlier comment about the DuPont chemical lady at 4:14 it reminds me of the mst3k short A Case of Spring Fever maybe she had the cartoon character visit her house and tell her about chemicals instead of springs!

    4:04 - I always hoped the kid in this commercial got to keep that, and hope he still has it today somewhere.

      They still keep in touch. They've met up numerous times over the years.

    4:14 - This woman strikes me as someone who, if you were stuck on a long bus ride seated next to her, she would bore you to tears talking about chemicals until you were ready to toss her out the window.

      “That window you’re about to toss me out of? Dupont’s clear, silane-based functional surface coatings are applied as low viscosity liquids that covalently bond to the surface of the gla-aaaaah!”

    This aired on NBC because, of course it did, it's a Bob Hope special. What's odd is there isn't one NBC promo in this whole block.

    I don’t think it will ever stop being painful to see the Twin Towers in an old TV show or movie. (Especially one shot inside a stairwell like this Texaco ad). Sometimes they’ll appear in the background of an old show filmed in NYC, and it always takes me completely out of the show when I see them.

    • @timothysprengeler4071

    Bob Hope On The Road To China-wonder if he ran into Brian and Stewie while they were en route to exploring those"ghost cities"..
    Coca Cola-Mike & Carol Brady on the train:"Who were all those other people,Bobby..?"
    Texaco-"No way im taking the stairs back down..where are the elevators.."

    The repetitive commercials...marketing strategy of brand recall 😆😆😆😆😆

    • @timothysprengeler4071
      @timothysprengeler4071 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think having all the commercials come from 3 sponsors is repetitive, I remember watching the original broadcast of the George C. Scott version of "A Christmas Carol" in 1984. IBM was the sole sponsor, so all--yes, every single one--of the commercials in that 2-hour broadcast were for IBM products. There are a lot of 80's volumes that I haven't seen yet, so I wonder if those commercials are in one of them.

    Unfortunately for that young man in the Coca-Cola commercial, he wouldn't be attending the 1980 Summer Olympics as the United States (amongst other countries) boycotted them.

    • @timothysprengeler4071
      @timothysprengeler4071 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recall that the Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, New York that year, but yes, we boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow. (Before 1994, the Winter and Summer Games were held in the same year.)

    • @bethdibartolomeo2042
      @bethdibartolomeo2042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's one thing that had me confused this year, that there was a boycott of China's Olympics but our athletes were still going, unlike in 1980. It was just a *diplomatic* boycott.
