It would be better that HAL , ADA, IAF take up lessons from PAF acquisition of JF-17 . In our case IAF didn't agree to onboard Tejas until IOC was obtained while PAF accepted JF-17 onboarding without an IOC and if IAF wants to first stabilise its squadron strength at 31 & increase beyond this number then Tejas Mk2 , AMCA orders should be placed during testing after First Flight & production roll-out should ve started immediately & acquire IOC & FOC during the time the fighters are being onboarded into Squadrons else if IAF waits to first acquire IOC ,then FOC & only then give orders for purchase then i am sorry to say the only way to maintain squadron strength is to keep upgrading already flying airframes & hope "No WarTime " falls upon us.
Btw, came across a news item that the new Air Chief is advocating a new strategy, the " Jaguar model" for the MRFA!

What IAF does is best for nation we need not to question their decision making. IAF is a professional force they knows what is best for them and are doing so.
The only thing that I don't understand is that, where their budget goes, when they are not replacing their older fleets nor they are increasing the number of current systems; only successful induction I have seen from past few years is 5 regiments of S400 and 32 Tejas mk1

If such things continue then other than buying ready made fighter jets from US , no other option will remain.
US can deliver since they have supply chain established and they will be happy to do that.
Else don't see anything happening here unless we buy ready made engines in bulk quantities to get production and induction started here.
You should have come with solutions and ways ahead considering all available options.

In any near or medium future iaf is not going to reach anywhere near it's wanted 42 squadrons it will have to learn lessons from 2 armed forces
1) idf/israeli airforce which is surrounded entirely by enemies it believes in " lean , mean and trim " Force where it has a medium strength but qualitatively superior airforce comprising of f-15, f-16 and small numbers of f-35 with many air and land based force multipliers like
Awacs/aerostat based aews/air to air refullers/ ew aircrafts and ground based ew systems /drones + lots of ground based air defence systems.
Or
Ukranian armed forces which has very minimal airforce but taking on world's 2nd largest airforce Russian airforce by relying heavily on ground based air defense systems as well as ground based offensive systems like missiles, drones and himars/mrls rocket systems etc.
Main issue is French lost many of their African colonies in last decade. They'll continue to struggle

That 31 squadron strength figure is highly misleading. The 10 Jaguar squadrons are on their last legs, many airframes have their flight envelope curtailed due to low engine thrust on account of wear and tear( on top of already reduced weather related performance from the beginning). The Mirage and Mig-29 squadrons also aren't very young though in far better flight conditions.
Biggest mistake was to stop Kaveri funding
Literally I have stopped listening about IAF..it is really in very bad situation.
India should acquire airframe rights from russia for su57 in exchange for billions we invested in time of project initiation, with existing engine for time being,then customise with own radar, FBW, mission computer, RWC, mission computer etc, we are very much capable of doing this, it will serve both purpose of 5th gen inventory and squadron strength. Something is always better than nothing
I may be wrong, but in my opinion IAF should buy 250+36 rafale + 60 rafale M for indian navy. This will lead to more than 300 rafale jet which will lead to manufacturing in India due to economics of scale, if they work with technical know why instead of technical know howalong with joint project R & D & D in complete synergy spectrum 😊
31 Squadron is also a good number & a manageable number given our current defence budget. As far as increase of this number is concerned that's not possible even when new fighter squadrons will be formed. As the newer squadrons will act as replacements for outgoing fighter platform squadrons such as Mig 21 (2 Squadrons 2025-2027). Unless the production of Tejas Mk2 is started along with continuous ongoing production of Tejas Mk1A increasing Squadron strength number is not possible. It would be better that Naval Mig 29s should be retired in 2033-2038 timeframe & repurposed for IAF till 2057 . As Naval Mig 29s are newer platforms compared to their IAF counterparts. Also it will be more suitable if IAF Mig 29s which were bought in 1984 onwards are replaced by Naval Mig 29s ensuring commonality as well as maintainability. India needs to ensure that Naval TEDBF gets first flight in 2027-2028 & production run starting from 2032 with minimum rollout of 18 aircrafts per annum this achieving 80-90 in 5 years & freeing up Naval Mig 29s for re-use in IAF & retire older Mig 29 platforms which by then would have flown close to 50 years.
Leaving all arguments aside for a while, I just hope we don't have to fight a major war in the next 5 years atleast. IAF is in a desperate situation right now and we don't want another 1962.
If the airforce cannot maintain squadron strength, we as a country is failed state. No point blaming IAF, HAL, congress or BJP. We are the idiots,we can see what is happening to Ukraine. We will have to fight like them, but without Western or now even Russian support. So, those that can afford make money in this country, but get out soon as yo can and protect your children. IAF, HAL, government top brass should and have and will do the same.

Even if absolute number of fighter aircrafts have fallen low, the quality of the aircrafts is of high order and can take on the Chinese or Pakistani Air Force anytime. Besides, we have top quality missiles and air defense systems too. So we can bid some more time as Tejas 1A, 2 and AMCA arrives. Besides, Su 30 MIK are getting their upgrades making them top class as well.

How do you see, not funding the Kaveri engine last 10 years in the whole scenario ? It is such a critical project, and our govt is simply sleeping. Why any country will transfer their technology which they have developed with billions of dollars and years of time. If we think it will happen for the engine, then we are biggest fool.
