- Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel a German professor of Philosophy in Tokyo, who took up the study of archery as a step toward an understanding of Zen Buddhism. He gradually overcame his initial inhibitions and began to feel his way toward new truths and ways of seeing. Intriguing, influential work of literature - an outstanding way to experience Zen, this illuminating philosophy. One has to transcend technique so that the art becomes an “artless art” growing out of the unconsciousness.

Zen can sound like riddles at times, but I ingest it as metaphor, or as a waking dream. And like this I put the spontaneity back into life. And like this I am able to absorb the idea of picking up a bow and being the target, or running a marathon and being the finish line or whatever suits me.

The artless art refers to the moment of mastery when the individual no longer consciously wields the sword or shoots the bow, the sword moves by itself independent of consciousness, moved by something much deeper than the unconscious. There is a lot of nonsense spoken about Zen, these days, to understand Zen you must train with a master because it involves a specialized form of psycho-physical training which is very, very difficult. Your best bet, if you are truly interested, is to go to Japan and seek out a master there. But be warned, the training is extremely hard, but if you get to the end, you will understand why.....

@@mohammedrahman1557 You will have to go to Japan and inquire yourself. They do not advertise and so you will need someone to introduce you which may take some time because they will want to make sure what kind of a person you are first. I was fortunate to be introduced to my Master by someone in San Francisco. But it took 18mths.
