It's early April 2000. The Russian Circus Vostok, known for its talented artists and wonderful shows, was finalizing preparations for a new season of shows in the parking lot of a shopping mall in the city, in the Piedade neighborhood. Although it was new at the time, Circus Vostok is old, opened in 1873 in Russia, and passed through six generations of the family. On April 9, a beautiful sunny Sunday, the boy José Miguel turned six years old. His father, José Fonseca, took him to celebrate at Circo Vostok, along with his sister Mirella. The attractions started 10 minutes late, but everything went as planned after the start. Before a performance with lions, a 20-minute break was announced to set up the animals' cages in the arena. The trainer took advantage of the time to invite the children to see the animals up close and take photos. Juninho, as he was affectionately called, and Mirella liked the idea and went to the arena with several other children.
At the time, there were no laws regulating safety in wild animal shows. The lions had not fed for three days and the iron bars of the cages were spaced far enough apart for the animals to pass their paws through. There was a braid of nylon rope next to the bars, but it was ineffective. The children watched the lions with fascination and took many photographs. Juninho asked about the horses, and the presenter showed the enclosure where they were, allowing father and son to follow the animals along a shortcut next to the lions' cages. Upon returning, a lion weighing around 220 kg named Pombo stretched out his paws, grabbed and pulled Juninho, snatching him from his father's hands and dragging him around 30 meters to the center of the cage. The massacre that followed became known worldwide. Severino, a circus musician, witnessed the attack and described the lion's strength in pulling the boy, who bent the iron bars. The lions bit the boy very aggressively in front of 3,000 people, who ran and screamed in despair. The father and Mirella were petrified in shock.
