    Lakme was written by the French composer Leo Delibes in 1882. The story takes place in India during the British occupation. In act one, Lakme, the daughter of a high priest, and her servant Mallika are sent to gather flowers down at the river where they sing this duet.
    This was a great change of pace and after hearing this I can appreciate even more how beautiful the human voice is as an instrument. This duet was made even more popular by being featured in a British Airways commercial

    Not many people can appreciate good classical music. Some of my favorites are Wagners "Ride of the Valkaries", Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". Sometimes it's good just to put it on and let it envelope your mind and soul...it's cleansing!

    Hey there Nick, it's my first time here...and I just wanted to say that "The Flower Duet" does the same thing to me. EVERY TIME. It goes straight to the soul... I think of 2 angels as well (I'm sure many do) their voices wafting over the clouds and sky as they usher those lucky souls to the gates of heaven ... (and I'm an atheist!!)

    I thought I would recommend an American composer to you. Aaron Copland is one of America's greatest composer's. His influence was huge in the 1930s and 40s. He was called the dean of American composer's. I would like to recommend 1, Hoedown, because it's Quintessentially American tune. 2, El Salon Mexico, becauce of it's beautiful southwest flavor. And finally, 3 the 4th Movement of the 3rd symphony, which is one of the greatest American pieces ever written (in my opinion).

    I see someone else provided details about this piece. Opera and classical music is a very deep but rewarding rabbit hole! Hope to see you re-visit it often. For another terrific opera entry, check out "E lucevan le stelle" from the opera Tosca sung by Luciano Pavarotti in 1978. It's an aria sung in the third act by a painter in love with the singer, Tosca, while he waits for his execution. Powerful stuff!

    • @sarahbeach4849
      @sarahbeach4849 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The best aria ever written in an opera . Pure , sentimental and makes you cry if you intouched with her , and I always in touched to her ! Leo Delibes , what have you done to me, man ? That aria is my Achilles' heel ! Never ready for that aria . Is so strong to me! I'm crying everytime! Duet del fleurs forever !

    • @russki1978
      @russki1978 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel exactly the same. The Flower Duet touches you in a way that no other piece of music ever will. Delibes was a genius. There are other pieces in the opera Lakmé that are quite magical too, like the Bell Song from act II but it's a demanding piece that requires a very good technique. Mediocre singers cannot do justice to it. I believe Natalie Dessay and Sabine Devieilhe give some of the best renditions of the Bell Song, and they both recorded the Flower Duet too.

  • @MisterWondrous

    This one always gets me. And if it doesn't get others then I don't get them. Another song that pierces the heart in the same way is Offenbach's "Barcarole", beautifully utilized in the magnificent "Life is Beautiful" ("La Vita e Bella") by and with Roberto Begnini and his radiant Principessa.

    You are likely to enjoy the performance of Amira Willighagen, a young teenager, and Corlea Botha in South Africa. Amira has just graduated from high school now and is going on a world tour. You would like Alma Deutscher, a teenage impresaria. She sold out Carnegie Hall for a concert of her music; songs from her CINDERELLA Opera, which sold out in San Jose, California; playing her piano and violin concertos, [on a permanent loaner Stradivarius] and her Siren waltz. People told her that modern music must be ugly; so she resolved a traffic jam into four Viennese waltzes.
