  • Ajahn Jayasaro, born in England, studied under the Venerable Ajahn Cha in Thailand and
became a novice monk in 1979 and a fully ordained bhikkhu in 1980. He served for five years as abbot of Wat Pa Nanachat, a monastery in Northeast Thailand that provides traditional forest monastic training in English to people from around the world. He has lived in a hermitage at the foot of the Kow Yai mountain range for the past decade. He is the author of many books on Buddhist theory and practice, teacher of meditation to lay Buddhists, and advisor to a growing movement to integrate Buddhism more effectively into the Thai education system.
He recently gave a lecture at Georgetown University in Qatar, on the topic of Happiness.

Imagine how rare it is for someone to hear words like this. The hundreds of millions of people who lived long ago that never had access to these teachings. We truly are blessed to be in a time where we can hear such truths from the comfort of our own homes.

They had other things like actually working hard going inwards and knowing the truth for themselves like the Buddha and not like many people now watching tv and internet. Every age has its own advantages and disadvantages. And made use of them accordingly.

What a powerful hour of talk. It almost feels like the older I get, the more I dont understand about my life/being on this planet, and that the idea of Buddhism shows a perspective I never really spent time thinking about. The permeance of desires on the mind: making more money, more power, more women, etc, that we are never satisfied really resonates a heavy truth. Using desires to distract ourselves from solving deeper problems.

its amazing we live in a time where a simple search can lead to wisdom like this. you have to respect ajahn jayasaro. the man became a monk at a very young age and spent the rest of his years searching for the truth.

I am surprised at just how few people have watched this video in the few months of its uploading. Clearly, this goes to show that more of the other trivial and crude things tend to distract us from the education of our mind that may lead us to an understanding and appreciation of this refinement of the mind. How fortunate are those who have been able to come across this lecture and watch the full length of it. Now we can train our mind accordingly. May all be well and happy.

When you buddhist monks pray for evil doers to be well and happy it is a grave error and terrible sin. Just as oil separates from water so must you logically separate good from bad

This is not mystical mambo yambo but a realistic analysis and conclusion of the precariousness of life (and hence of happiness) with tangible examples that most of us had experienced at a given time in our lives. Ajahn sound more like a psychologist than a monk and I think that's great. I think that teachings about karma, rebirth and other metaphysical topics can be sidelined in favor of dealing with our immediate existential problems here and now. Great talk!

    • @colinellesmere

The issue you mention cant be side lined as they are essential for the Buddhist path to enlightment. But when talking to secular audiences it is wise to leave them out as the terms may be misunderstood or even opposed. Ajahn Jayasaro uses words so skillfully. He does not vere from the Buddhist path in his explanation here but talks in a way that can be accepted by non Buddhist. Logically what he says can be understood by all of us except those prejudiced and not at all enquiring into their own nature. I have recommended this talk to quite a few people as the clarity is a real wake up call to enquire into and adjust our behaviour in order to experience happiness.

Absolutely, he has made clear on Buddhism, thanks for being such a good teacher, for those who want to know. The world need to understand life, not just follow our selfish genes, which are our instincts in the natural selection. We know full well in the nature of DNA, and the different effects we get between Hitler and MotherTeresa.

there is joy then rapture then serenity. when you have serenity pleasure can arise and then concentration. from concentration knowledge of how things are which is at the forefront for clear knowing of the four noble truths. This is suffering. this is the cause of suffering. this is the path to the end of suffering. this is the end of suffering. which is at the forefront of the whole mass of stress.

Reading some of the comments posted I wonder what it is that impedes listening in so many of the commentators minds. I felt this talk was very profound and insightful but evidently many simply ignored or refused to examine what was said by the Ajahn prefering their prejudices and hostile perceptions as a source of satisfaction and comfort rather than opening themselves to the processes the Ajahn offered. A pity.

+Trevor Magee And what about you or even me right now do u need to mention that for your personal satisfaction? And i also think that after opening yourself and really try to understand what a person hs to say you must then critisize it, i never doubted Ajahn is a great and wise man but everything he says must be passed throught a filter of your own knowledge and experience.

If we are familiar with The Buddha's teachings in Kalama Sutra/Sutta we would know that the Buddha advised us NOT to believe something because it's merely a tradition, hearsay, logical, congenial with our belief systems or preconceptions, the speaker's (or writer's) sounding credible, the speaker's (or writer's) being one's teacher, and surely NOT because it's the Buddha who said it. Rather he encouraged us to examine and observe to see if it's true and resonates in our heart as something good and wholesome to do. Thus, regarding the Dharma he gave us all an invitation to , "Ehi Passiko", lit. meaning, "Come and see for yourself); ehi=by oneself; passiko=see by oneself.

I'm sorry to hear that your family are acting out of ignorance. Maybe when you try to tell them about the virtues of Buddhism, don't let them in on the fact that it is actually Buddhism. From another perspective, it can be seen as just a philosophy, after all. You aren't going to convert them, but maybe you can moderate their views. Keep on trying!

    Dear BUDDHIST TEACHER ,
IN THE CURRENT MIND OF ME , perhaps the words of Buddha is like all existent , all nature , is an arrow pointing at own nature , pointing at what we are and his words is a great source of realization into own nature .
As one awaken to own nature, one no longer holds anything in mind and constantly at a mind readiness of change . One will no longer choose what to learn or who to learn from as all living or non-living regardless its nature is a great source of own realization and all is a great teacher .
So what is the reason for BUDDHIST TEACHER to teach Buddhism ?
Over the past 16 years , I had communicated with hundreds if not thousands of people in the circle of formal Buddhism studies such as monk / teachers / practitioners / followers etc and now reach a mind that claim all Buddhist Teacher regardless the nature of their teaching is someone that suffering holding on an expended large mind filled with referrals and teaching it to others .
In the current mind of me ,
Buddhist Teachers had robbed the words of Buddha and like the nature of a parasite, taking advantage by teaching Buddha’s words to enjoy fame and recognition from public .
Buddhist Teacher in the current mind of me not only misleading Buddha’s words but is also responsible transforming it into a form of knowledge / culture even rituals .
Perhaps 2500 years ago , Prince Siddharta had found a key that could lead to realization of own nature and his words is like an arrow pointing at what we are but Buddhist Teacher is teaching people that the arrow is pointing at “ A Goal” and lead people chasing that goal .
I , by my registered name Ee Chuan Seng is putting a claim that all Buddhist Teacher is the “ Terrorist Of Mankind” for transforming perhaps the greatest discovery of mankind into a factor for human to continue to suffer. I am not a spam and will be responsible with all my claims .
Dear sir , are you are Buddhist Teacher or someone teaching Buddhism ?
The reason I contacted Buddhist Teacher is to challenge this current mind of me and a mind that question Buddhist Teacher’s role . I am currently at a mind readiness of change and regardless what , you are a great source of realization to me and always a great teacher .
So if you are a Buddhist Teacher or someone teaching Buddhism , I hope you could reply and allow me explore the mind of you .
    Sincerely
    Ee Chuan Seng
