- An overview of the game Repton by Superior Software, played on an Acorn Electron computer.
Lazy Game Reviews Quickie #1
These LGRQ videos are a break from my "full length" reviews to simply show more arcade-like games and give my opinion on the game and how it plays. The goal is to do this in around 3 minutes for each game, unscripted and unrehearsed.
Review starts at 1:40
@tombert256 Yeah, it's not always easy finding the time. So I might do one or two of these on weeks it's really tough to get a "full" review out. Or just wheneer I feel like it.
Most of the normal ones take around 8-10 hours to complete, just guessing. This one I started at 5PM and was done at 7.
Thanks, I certainly "can" so I certainly will!
@TheLoonwolf I do hope to review some more in the future! I also have some BBC Micro stuff in the works, both gameplay/commentary and full reviews. I love these Acorn machines.
My favourite persons saying Greetings! 1) Deckard Cain, 2) Clint the LGR 3) Apostle Paul :)
@HighTreason610 Yes, DNF is going to be my wallpaper into 2011 I'm guessing! Can't say how excited I am.
UK games are indeed the best! I'm really hoping to look at a whole lot more doing these "quickie" reviews, since so many of them aren't huge games but man are they fun.
@X3CuT1oNR Fast Breaks is another possibility, no bad. I'm still very open to suggestions for the title of the "quickies" so any ideas are welcome!
@Tito0096 Yes. Plus I don't have the many hundreds of dollars laying around to invest in quality HD equipment. And VHS fits the period these games are from so I use it.
I love that curt BASIC error message: "Mistake". Most other computers generally avoid blaming the user, although I remember a Stickybear educational game for the Apple II which chastised me when it couldn't find the file I requested, saying "Maybe you typed it wrong".
@endofthelinejoel Thanks, I'm glad to be of service. The "long" reviews certainly aren't going anywhere, but it should be nice to touch on some smaller games, and videos, here and there.
@PituDitu I've been getting a lot of requests for Supaplex recently, so a review may just be incoming in the somewhat near future :)
A lot of respect this game gets comes from two sources: people who appreciate the quality this one coder, a child at the time, managed to put into this game; and people who owned a BBC computer, where it originates, as the BBC had very few games so anything that was decent enough to play got lavished with praise.
@benanderson88 I actually have a BBC Model B on its way to me here soon, if all goes well! Cannot wait to play Elite in its "true" form, and try Repton and the many other great BBC games.
Holy crap how long have you been doing this Clint? I guess I need to head over to the videos and load more until I get to the end.
3 hours later of clicking load more... 9 YEARS! Wow, that's awesome! Now back to the show.
You're joking I'm sure but you do know you can click on show videos from old till new right? :P
@@Lbird1993 not on mobile you can't.
@SeoTaijiboy Sometimes I think that was a mistake. It was indeed the original idea behind them, to be as lazy as possible while retaining some quality. I really am quite laid-back and lazy as possible when making them. But it comes off as not lazy at all and therefore very confusing. I kind of feel stuck with the name now...
@alanw3000 They'll get their chance, I promise! I really want to do a review of them, but I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I'll do. There's tons to cover and show and only so much time I have.
@rejectofsoul24 Tentative title. Not sure what I'll call these for sure, but for now I'm referring to them as a Lazy Game Reviews "Quickie"
@atrainhxdotcom I certainly take requests! I am not always able to fill them, but I take them :)
As for this one, that sounds possible at some point. Not sure when, or what I'd do with such a video actually. Personally I find myself uninteresting but if there is enough interest I might just do such a thing if I can find a way to make it fun
@MrMoneyclips Thank you, I greatly appreciate the appreciation!
Great video! Short or long, all your vids are really well done and informative, so I'm glad you do both!
You really gotta play the BBC B version of this game to get the best out of it, Clint. Electron versions were either A) duplicate games that ran the same as the B cos they didn't take a whole lot of memory, or B) completely redone (and often corners cut) on the Electron for more complex games, such as this.
Growing up with a BBC B, Repton was my "thing", for years, he was my Mario. I'd draw him on school books, design my own screens (later entries had level creators), non stop.
I'll have to say, the first one is maybe a "You had to be there" entry. If you're coming in decades later for a review, Repton 3 on the BBC B is the one to look at (Repton 2 was insanely hard, and effectively one big level - with no passwords or saves!) Repton 3 had more interesting elements added, good puzzles, etc. the best game-play, etc. Surprised you didn't think much of this one but as I say I don't think you really saw the best 'example' of the game here. (Loved the review though). A Repton 3 review (er even a series overview) would be great, and I think you'd have some fun stuff to say about it, too. :)
It’s true the Beeb versions were often better but for us Electron ‘Elk’ fans is great to stumble over these videos on TH-cam :)
@@tonykingsmill2310 Oh I totally agree (I'm both a Beeb and an Elk boy, still have both), I think Repton is the big real example of needing to play the Beeb version to get the full experience, which might have impressed Clint more). I used to be so nerdy that I'd often play Beeb and Elk versions side-by-side to play spot the difference. :)
Loved Repton as a kid. The Repton 3 series for our Acorn Archimedes especially
@Rabthebest Thanks.
And I might. They offered a couple weeks back, I applied just for the heck of it so we'll see what happens.
And I thought the load times on a NeoGeo CD was bad... Image that on a newer gen console...just wow. A good name for these reviews could be called "Fast Breaks" games that not the most in-depth but just a blast to play (and review) in your spare time. Nice Quickie Clint!
@vwestlife Haha, yeah I wanted to toss that in here somehow. I found it funny that it does fault the user directly, it's so blunt. Even "bad command or file name" sounds a bit better than simply "mistake"!
The Tandy sitting on top of a monitor 😂
Very much a short on space computer collector thing. :)
@dave4shmups Watch my video review of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k. I go into complete detail of my setup for playing PAL systems, including power conversion, NTSC->PAL adapters etc
Like you said, We do like it in the UK. Reminds me of my child hood. Thanks for uploading. Love Acorn computers.
@ian313665 One could make the comment that your comment is just as terrible, if not more so, considering you state nothing that would help improve the quality of this review and instead only lay down a deconstructive criticism without any specified base to it whatsoever.
Is it possible for you to do a review of Super Crate Box? It's available on Steam for free, and it's very highscore-centric.
You, sir, are my favorite game channel, second only to Inecomcompany. And that is a HUGE compliment!!!
love puzzle games and Repton is my all time favorite and have played it since it was 1st released on the BBC micro and is now also available on iPhone android and PC.
Nice little quick review. I think you did a good job.
Aaargh, those cassette tapes. I have bad memorys about those ones. Kids these days don't know anything about "long loading times". I remember to be waiting something like 15 minutes to get game work. :P
phreak
do you do requests?
I've mentioned previously that I really enjoy your videos and the presentation. Would it now be rude if I requested/suggested that you make a short 'about me' style film. Just a few more details about yourself, interests, how you came to be doing what you do, etc, etc. I feel many readers would appreciate a little more insight into phreak - the man.
I live in the US too, but how are you running the Acorn when it's PAL??
Yeah, I always wonder why you call them Lazy Game Reviews, can I can tell a lot of work is put into these.
Cool! Is that an 'Out of this World' poster next to Pink Floyd?
Awesome review, always have wanted an Electron.
@Lachlant1984 No. At least, not to my knowledge.
I personally would love if you did a few more "adlib" reviews like this.
I had this for the BBC Micro and it ran much better than this version. Practically a full screen and much smoother.
"Mistake"
that is adorable!
Lol, I notice your DNF wallpaper. YA! British games... We're always the best! lol. to be honest, it's rare that you come accross a collector with an Acorn in this country, at least in my region. I can hear faint yelling when you are talking about the reptile :D
Did the Electron even come out in the US?
I'm pretty sure the main character is Magic Man from Adventure time. Dead ringer.
@phreakindee BBC BASIC did have a pretty huge range of error messages. The usual ones to receive in this sort of circumstance were 'Syntax Error' for badly phrased instructions, 'Bad command' for incorrect file system commands or simply 'Mistake' if the input made no sense whatsoever ;>
supaplex was a good upgrade to this game, nice puzzles and still trying to beat my old records i've set when I was 9 years old.
@MagikGimp The zooming text has nothing to do with it. I played all the Repton games on the BBC Micro and enjoyed them, but never even saw that Electron text effect before today XD
And yes, the game series is so well respected that a new sequel was just released last year for the original platform - 20years after the last one!
I started gaming aged 6 on an Acorn Electron! I think the first game I played on it was a Mr Men game. I played the Repton games for ages, and are about the only games I really remember on that system.
I used to play Repton for hours and hours as a kid and was a ninja at the first level! I think the password for level 12 is Salamander, but I can't quite remember as that was about 29 years ago. I played some of the other Repton games, but they were kinda weird and nails hard. Repton 2 was a complete nightmare. Citadel was my other favourite.
One of my all time favourite games!!! loved it!!
@RandyAndyTandy I agree, i played entire series of Repton at BBC Micro, and really loved it
Video Games on Cassette tapes are still a very strange concept to me, same with VCR board games, but fascinating none the less
@phreakindee The quality long-form reviews are worth the wait. Well researched and presented.
Your channel is a breath of fresh air compared to all the "shouting-expletives-is-funny" brigade of quarterwitted retro reviewers on TH-cam.
I saw this game on the cover of the new Retro Gamer from the UK and while I haven't delved into that issue yet I knew I had to see this review first because I had no idea what this game was and might have not read the article otherwise.
3:22 I heard someone say "Stereo" in the background.
***** Sounds like it came from the game
Where does phreakindee come from?
Anyone else just absolutely love his voice?
@phreakindee Well, trust me. Regardless of the effort in these videos, the name is one that sticks very well. I also enjoy watching the Angry Video Game Nerd, but you don't need elaborate plots or special effects to get in the way of concrete info and opinion. Keep up the good work.
Awesome thanks 👍
Halt! I am Repton. Halt! I am Repton. Halt! I am Repton.
The review is great
This game was my childhood, Just because you find a game hard dosnt mean its not decent. I owned and completed all, this is one game that made me fall in love with video games.
Likewise. I think I had all Repton games for the beeb, even creating my own beasts on Repton Infinity.
@Tito0096 JVC GR-AXM225
Well respected? Fuck I HATE Boulderdash! I would imagine people like it because of the technical aspect. Gotta love that zooming text.
You should try Supaplex
The character in Repton looks a bit like the Flying Men from Earthbound/Mother. XD
ahh classic tape games!!!
lgrQ?
cassette based games were before my time.
I really want to try the cassette gaming experience. My dad was stationed in UK decades ago, and got a Sinclair, but I was too young to appreciate it. I got a CoCo now, but I really want a ZX Spectrum. There is something special about loading programs with cassette tape. :-)
0 people are...wait a second....
"Mistake"? ;D ... Is that the Acorn equivalent of the "SYNTAX ERROR" of the C64? How succinct ;).
Playing some Axiom Verge while listening to LGR. Doing better than I deserve....
Hardly anyone in the UK knew about this game, most people back in the 80s had an Atari, C64 or Spectrum and all these had the original (and much better) Boulderdash.
By the way, on your Repton review, the monsters that come after you are NOT faster than you, your obviously just not very skilled at moving around, their paths just follow you X or Y?? duh!
4:52 MISTAAAAAAAAAAAKE!
Dude. Your unrestrained disgust for your job back in the day was the best.
Good review. When I saw [LGRQ] it reminded me of LGBT hahaha.
screw this!!!
mistake
Love the snooker tune !! Another original from the 80s. Graphics 10 audio 10....Fantastic.
@Tito0096 Its cool wathing quality like that, looks like it was record few years ago, reminds good tiems
