Here are my pros and cons with Tobi being Obito:
Cons:
• Lack of surprise - There have been so many theories of who Tobi is, and the fact that he is Obito is the most obvious thing ever. Tobi is just Obito’s name, but with one of the O’s removed, and the rest of the letters scrambled. Also, Tobi and Obito’s names can be fused two different ways: Obitobi and Tobito. Both Tobi and Obito have the same hairstyle, and Tobi only shows a Sharingan in his right eye. The times he has shown both of his eyes are when he uses another person’s eye, like an unknown Uchiha’s (Izanagi against Konan) and Madara’s. Lastly, Tobi and Kakashi’s Sharingan visual jutsus are very similar.
• Plot holes and plot conveniences - Ever since episode 345, we learn that a Sharingan user can see through another person’s perspective if that person has the other eye. Because of that, I find it very convenient that Kakashi has not once seen through Obito’s perspective before. If you think that only Uchiha have that ability, well episode 384 deconfirms that theory. Also, the way Obito survives is a plot hole for two reasons: he said that his right side was completely crushed, but apparently that was kind of retconned, and his eye was still able to remain intact; also, Madara stated that part of how he survived was that he was able to miraculously slip through the rocks, which is a form of the Kamui, which is an ability exclusive to the Mangekyo Sharingan, but Obito didn’t unlock it at the time.
Pros:
• Emotional impact on the characters and audiences - Tobi being Obito sacrifices surprise with emotional impact, which is what I think is better. If Tobi was a character we and the characters weren’t connected with, then at most, we would just be shocked. With Tobi being Obito though, we are stunned that this kind kid became this evil manipulator, and we want to know why exactly he turned out this way. What’s most important is the fact that Obito’s reveal impacts Naruto and Kakashi though. Throughout the series, we have gotten so many hints of what it would’ve been like if Naruto was evil, like when Naruto learned about Gaara’s persona in Part 1, and when Naruto questioned if his and Sasuke’s roles could’ve been reversed in Shippuden. Obito is the payoff for that because he is Naruto Uchiha that became evil. Also, Kakashi is anti-Sasuke, while Obito is anti-Naruto. All of these aspects affect the characters.
• Kishimoto the character - Tobi is essentially Kishimoto the character because he is the one that causes most of the events in the show to happen. If it wasn’t for him, then the show wouldn’t turn out the way it was. Regardless if we like Obito or not, we should be grateful that he created the series. Also, it’s thanks to his actions that eventually peace was able to be realized in the Ninja World. He made every nation go against him, which allowed them to get along with each other. The fact that Tobi is Obito makes this more crazy because he is essentially Naruto’s evil doppelgänger. I also love this connection here: Naruto is the main protagonist, and to me, Obito is the main antagonist.
• Ninja Star Wars - The Naruto series became Ninja Star Wars because of Tobi being Obito. Naruto is Luke, Kakashi is Obi-Wan, Madara is Palpatine/Darth Sidious, and Obito/Tobi is Anakin/Darth Vader. To me, Naruto is better than Star Wars, especially the prequel trilogy. All of the characters that I mentioned make better Star Wars characters than the actual Star Wars characters, especially Obito Uchiha. Obito makes a better Darth Vader because he doesn’t say cringe-worthy dialogue, and his personality and ideology is much more relatable than Vader's. Also, his turn to the dark side is not forced, unlike Anakin’s (watch this video through time slots 26:43-28:20: m.th-cam.com/video/S7vLfnwmUyw/w-d-xo.html). Of course Anakin in The Clone Wars show is actually likable, but it’s because of that why I think that show slightly retcons the prequel trilogy. I wish to see the prequel trilogy remade under The Clone Wars crew because it doesn’t make sense for Anakin to go from being whiny in episode 2, to being kind and noble in The Clone Wars, to go back to being whiny in episode 3. Not to mention the fact that Anakin doesn’t mention his padawan Ahsoka in episode 3. Even though Obito and Kakashi's friendship was short-lived compared to Anakin and Obi-Wan's, it's more tragic seeing Kakashi fight Obito than seeing Obi-Wan fight Anakin thanks to better writing, which is why Kakashi vs. Obito is more emotionally powerful to me than Obi-Wan vs. Anakin in episode 3. Also because of better writing, Obito's redemption arc and sacrifice works better than Anakin's. In a nutshell, Star Wars has a very inconsistent tone with its writing, while Naruto has a more consistent one. Because of my problems with Star Wars, Obito is the best fallen hero archetype ever, not Darth Vader.
