Hi. The main difference would be the price. The black lacquer would be more expensive. Also as with all lacquers they wear away over time, so when the black lacquer wears away or gets scratched you will begin to see the gold underneath. This would be less noticeable with a golden sax. Some believe that the lacquer makes a difference to the tone but that would be minimal. If you are going to buy a professional sax, then you may find that the price difference is enough to buy an expensive mouthpiece instead. But if you like the look of it, it will make you want to play it more often. Thanks
Hi Im Roy from Cardiff, Could I ask is your Horn a Keilwerth shadow ? I have one also. Could I also ask what Mouthpiece you use ? Could you use Milton's Baby Bottle cleaner ?
Hi Roy. My horn is a Selmer SA80 series II. I use the Selmer S80 C* which came with the saxophone. I also use a Jazz select DM6. I'm not sure how effective Milton's Baby Bottle cleaner would be since its designed mainly to remove milk residue. Thanks.
Hi. It's a Selmer mark 2. It looks good when you first buy it but after a while the black lacquer comes off showing the gold underneath. If I buy another it will probably be gold as the scratches wont show.
@@Lawnmower-os5pg Hi. My black lacquered sax was an upgrade from my previous student sax so it would have sounded better regardless of the lacquer. Personally after researching the topic, I don't put too much in the sound difference that the lacquer makes. I put it in the same category as whether a ligature makes a difference to the sound. The sound comes from the person and their years of practice. To be honest I only bought the black one because it looked nice. Some musicians would say there is a sound difference, others would not even with a blind test. But there will probably be a price difference with unlacquered costing more. Thanks
