Minus one made sense being made family perspective cause it was a critic against how poorly society was treated back in 40's, while Shin is a critic on how bad managed was japan back when the 2011 earthquake hit, being unprepared for natural disasters, which is what shin is, an always evolving disasters

So, the original Godzilla was a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Shin Godzilla is a metaphor for Fukushima. That's why both the kind of damage he does and the response of the characters around him are so different. A major critic of the Japanese government in Fukushima was how the bureaucracy slowed down the response and cost many more lives than the disaster should have.

During Shin’s atomic breath scene, when it was commented that he must’ve had a thought behind those eyes compared to the other form, it reminded me- Shin, is technically a baby- He literally has no thoughts- the way his brain works, it’s like a counter. It waits until the opponent makes a move, and he instantaneously heals, and evolves to counter that. But the instant evolutions, come at a price. Shin is in constant pain, and every time it roars, it’s just in pain. So when he was bombed in the back? He simply healed, and developed his atomic breath on the spot to take those jets down.

    A few things:
This specific Godzilla is actually inspired by the triple disaster that happened in Japan around that time, a massive earthquake, a tsunami and a nuclear power plant meltdown, so this is more of a natural creature mutated by nuclear power rather than a creature created by a nuclear bomb. ... Okay, that's still pretty similar, but it wasn't due to war or bomb testing, lol.
And yeah, this movie was released in 2016, so I'm sure that the years of development for -1.0 in 2023 would look better CGI wise, but this is still great looking for a Godzilla movie, especially the Atomic Breath scene.
Yes, the PM and heads of the government were shown dying, they were on the helicopter that Godzilla hit with his Atomic Breath.
Yes, Godzilla has flown before... though, I guess it was more in a silly way than a 'he has wings' kind of way. Just look up the Godzilla vs Hedorah scene I suppose if you want to know and not watch the whole movie.
And no, at the end there with the nuke, she was saying how many seconds were left before they would have launched it, with or without Japan's consent. They had frozen Godzilla just in time before America went through with the plan, they only waited longer because Japan convinced France to ask them to wait a bit longer.
I still have a tough decision deciding between Shin Godzilla and Godzilla -1.0 on which one I like more. -1.0 is definitely more emotional and endearing to the story, but Shin is better with in theming and in-story plot holes, though it still has some. Both have such great scoring and animations, love them both, just can't pick a favorite, lol.

Minus One Godzilla kills without reason or mercy.
Shin Godzilla kills because he is suffering.
I love how this movie ties in the Hiroshima bombing with the Americans having to "help" Japan get rid of Godzilla by reaching the choice to nuke them. It just goes to show how much sacrifice Japan has had to go through due to America over history, which is pretty sad.
It made me emotional seeing this society struggling against an other-worldly force, just for their one hope of aid to end up deciding to destroy them even more at the chance it would kill Godzilla. I was really tense!
Also that laser beam/fire scene is hands down my favorite Godzilla moment in ALL his movies. The music that plays is so heartfelt and emotional, and if you listen to the lyrics (or read them), they describe Godzilla's internal emotions- how he's suffering just the same, because in this movie, Godzilla is simply an animal who does not understand what he is doing.
All he does in this movie is walk, never purposefully attacking anyone until he himself is attacked. It's fascinating compared to most other Godzilla's who are either purely destructive or humanized and treated as weapons to protect the world.
This Godzilla, in my opinion, is the most terrifying and Godly. But he is also one of the most sympathetic.
    Man, I love this movie!!

  • @Hrbngr
    @Hrbngr 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

34:49 Because this Godzilla is constantly evolving, you're seeing what would have happened next if they hadn't froze it. It was literally beginning to break apart into smaller, bipedal creatures. (Though they would still be giants to us. I've seen estimates for their individual heights being around 5 meters or a little over 16 feet) The ending is threatening in a completely different way because of what could have been and might still be if it ever thaws. Shin Godzilla, if it had continued, would become a horror film.

Thank you for appreciating Shin Godzilla. This film is inspired by the unforgettable 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake for the Japanese people. The scene of Godzilla coming ashore by moving against the river’s flow and the following ruins evoke memories of the tsunami. The film also captures various aspects of the Japanese experience, including the nuclear disaster, bureaucratic response, and public protests. It’s a piece that holds a special place in my heart.

Well i cant fully confirm this, since im not japanese, but is what i had read in the Godzilla fandom. This gojira, it is a representation of nuclear disaster, but not that the minus one is based on, this is based on the 2010 fukushima disaster, and so many conference rooms is a critic to the slow reaction to japaneses goverment to that tragedy.

'Shin' is probably the most sweeping cinematographic Toho Godzilla film ever made. It gives the watcher such an amazing sense of size, weight, impact. For me, the best shot is from the fleeing car driving parallel to Godzilla and filming way up from the car's POV as those truly mountainous legs thunder past. I also like how they made his breath weapon work: starting with thick , oily billowing flames, focusing down to an intense laser-like focused beam like a blowtorch. This appears to be the most destructive Godzilla of all time, and with its constantly adjusting form and abilities - especially dropping potentially-regenerative lumps of flesh any time it gets injured. Overall, I really liked the movie, but I found the ending unsatisfying; they'll probably build an amusement park around it, and then be shocked when it wakes up. I wasn't able to catch 'Shin' on the big screen, but I'm puzzled by your assessment of the CGI as being inferior to 'Minus 1,' which I did view in the theatre. Are there any specific gaps or errors in 'Shin' that you based your opinion on?

It depends really, Shin's Atomic Breath certainly looks better, but a nuclear bomb Atomic Breath from -1.0 is also very destructive. I don't have the scaling between the two destroyed cities, but I think -1.0 has the more area destruction Atomic Breath while Shin has the more visually/adaptable destructive Atomic breath.

One thing I like about Shin is that you can see him get more powerful. The first Atomic Breath knocked him out for a couple weeks. Once he woke up, he was able to sustain the blasts for longer and they didn't drain him as much. He's very much "Doomsday" from Superman. One can only wonder what if he survived just a bit longer?

The bombs the US were using were bunker busters that are capable of penetrating reinforced underground military installations. They weigh about of 15 tons each and possess guidance systems. The bombs the Japanese fighters were using were also equipped with guidance systems (JDAM) so they would have less impact on surrounding buildings.

    Shin Godzilla is Spooky,
Though unlike other iterations of Godzilla, this one specifically represents the 2011 Earthquake and subsequent Fukushima Nuclear Meltdown, even the cranes that were responsible for cooling down the Nuclear reactors were what poured the coagulant into it's mouth. This Godzilla out of all of them could create a world-ending scenario, especially with it's theorized evolved forms, a scenario closer to AoT's the Rumbling
The Director, Hideaki Anno, is a name you might recognize, being the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

8:14 - Not really since as stated it shouldn't even be able to be on land, also Godzilla in any existence defies whats considered "realistic".
8:47 - I mean they technically did? Though this Godzilla is a league above that one I'd day in terms of durability at least.
15:55 - At the time this movie released, this was the tallest Godzilla in live action films. It's 118.5 meters, to give some perspective Minus One Godzilla was 50.1 Meters.
16:14 - That thing was him actually, he just hadn't come on land yet.
19:14 - Well its a good thing they have a big target
22:52 - Scary part is that this whole atomic breath was actually accidental on Shin Godzilla's part, for the most part anyway. It was basically just having a case of diarrhea that caused pure destruction.
24:47 - What makes it even more terrifying is that ironically, this Godzilla is less hostile and in ways less destructive than the minus one Godzilla but as you said, still causes more destruction. Minus One actively attacked people and intentionally caused destruction towards buildings.
Shin Godzilla on the other hand before the atomic breath, all the destruction it caused was just a result of it walking forward, and even then it was centered in a straight line, people could actually be okay so long at they weren't in its direct path, even when the Military attacked it the first time it never retaliated against them and just kept moving. Only when the US attack actually hurt it did it respond.
34:50 - This ending bit was basically showing Shin Godzilla about to evolve again, the implication that was going to turn into multiple humanoid forms.

Shin is one of the best Goji films in terms of critiquing the government, this one in particular is their slow/lack of responses to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown and Tohoku earthquake/tsunami. Shin Goji is also like a personification of nature in this, in that he's in pain, confused, and reacting on instinct to threats (which is the reason for his evolutions)
You should definitely also react to these three songs from Shin, with the lyrics - Who Will Know, Persecution of the Masses, and Defeat is no Option! They're from different perspectives

This movie is more a critique of the japanese governement for their lack of response during the fukushima disaster

Some scenes look cheap because it is made to look like the good old miniature works in some ways.

Story wise, its mid but has very forgettable characters. But the godzilla scenes are amazing in this one and that atomic breath is out of this world. Scary, intimidating and deadly.
Like Minus one looks like brute, this one is like a demon.

The first half of this movie is a black comedy lampooning the Japanese governments botched response to the Triple Disaster of March 11, 2011
