Venice, capital of the Veneto region of northern Italy, occupies more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. The city has no roads, only canals, including the Grand Canal, lined with Gothic and Renaissance palaces. In the center, St. Mark's Square is home to St. Mark's Basilica, covered in Byzantine mosaics, and St. Mark's Campanile, with views of the red roofs of Venice.

Conquest by Napoleon: In 1797, Venice was conquered by the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte and incorporated into the Cisalpine Republic. After the fall of Napoleon, Venice was ceded to Austria at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
