I guess the reason why earlier seasons Elena's looks got so popular is how easy it is to replicate. At least around my area, you could find those shirts anywhere

Lol it was just pathetic where I live. I live in a tropical country so our everyday clothes are for hot weather, and every damn winter everybody was like “omg I can finally dress like Elena” and I remember many articles in teen magazines being like “how to replicate Elena’s look with hot weather” or teaching how to do her makeup and haircut because it was literally impossible to buy her clothes lmao

The thing is, in the books the show was based off, the Salvatores weren't from 1860's America. They were from 1450's Italy. I think the change was to make it more "relatable" or "contextually appropriate". I think this really shows in how they treated Bonnie, a black character who was originally white (in the books). Everyone (at least on tumblr), is super pissed about how her character was treated. Someone said that Bonnie was sidelined so hard because when Bonnie/Damon was getting screentime and getting popular in the fandom, showrunner Julie Plec was mad because she treated Elena's character, a blandly attractive white girl, as her self insert, and having one of "her" love interests "stolen" by a cooler, more interesting character played by a black actress, made her mad. I'm not saying that's what happened exactly, but it certainly holds water, imo.
I personally think that the writers were definitely biased. The fact that there is so much representation for the confederacy is a blatant sign of that. Also they K-worded so many of Bonnie's love interests; those that were black were written out after an episode or two every time, so... I think people have a point about being mad
Caroline was definitely the blandly attractive white girl self-insert that the two main female writers (which were also blonde) latched themselves onto, not Elena, imo.
There's nothing special about the appearance of the actress that played bonnie. She's no more interesting looking than the actresses you insulted here by calling them "bland".
Yeah, I wish they made bonnie and damon like the books. They tried to make a big character, a background character, it made no sense. Kat is beautiful and the makeup artist and stylist dimmed her beauty with her style choices for the show. If they gave her proper clothes, hair etc it would have been better but because she is beautiful she was attractive regardless. Julie's excuse for damon and bonnie not being a couple is "she deserves someone good, not a vampire", then goes on to pair her with a..vampire 🙄 they were cute but even in was all for them being a couple in the show and talked about their amazing chemistry. They seemed very close during the filming of the show. I'm suprised they didn't actually date in real life, they had too much chemistry and the pair made more sense than elena to me. Like bonnie loved damon and held him accountable, elena couldn't do that. Bonnie could handle his crap. Wish they let bonnie have better, the least they could do was let enzo live but she travels and only elena has a good , more perfect ending. The most boring character was the focus and it was annoying. No hate to Nina, she was great in the show.
Also Info some people dont know is..people behind scenes, producers, stylists, directors etc...decide to dress and write storylines/do everything according to how important they believe a character to be...so with everyone else it seems they got more effort than bonnie. In older photoshoots before season 5 and dances in the show, everyone seemed to be dressed well or seem to have effort, and Bonnie outfits in certain photoshoots or scenes weren't good in comparison, that might seem like nothing but when every other lead woman had better hair, makeup and clothes. It matters. Kat Graham did speak about certain things like that in the industry for black women. Also, just my opinion Kat was one of the best actresses on the show, when I pay attention to her skills, change of voice, the way she showed emotional pain etc was amazing.
@@Maialeen she is more interesting to look at depending on your view of beauty. So is nina dobrev the basic pretty girl for that time? And 2010's? Yes. Kat Graham was dimmed with her clothes , hair etc. They are all pretty but saying shes no more interesting? Not true. Kat graham is gorgeous the stylist just sucked at giving better clothes and hair for her. How Kat looks on insta/red carpet and interviews where she decides the style, in comparison to the show. Big difference, that kind of stuff can diminish appearance in ways but Kat isnt ordinary pretty girl. Like Nina was considered at the time, they casted correctly for that role , conventionally attractive that most guys will like if it was really hs. She is very pretty but there's some truth in it. They knew what they were doing with the casting.
Honestly I think the only reason Elena's style was so popular was because it was actually realistic for a high school student and you could easily replicate it. She's the "girl next door" who isn't really interested in fashion (and always busy with people trying to kill her lol) so her basic and effortless look really makes sense and makes her feel relatable. And I actually appreciated that they also kept the outfits for all the decade dances (that town and high school seriously love partying!) pretty realistic. Most teenagers probably don't know much about vintage fashion apart from some cliches and they're likely gonna use old clothes from their parents or whatever they already have that sort of matches the theme instead of going out and buying an actually good outfit. I also thought that Matt and Elena both rewearing last years's Halloween costumes instead of buying something new was pretty fitting for the characters. Most teens don't have money to constantly buy new clothes and they definitely don't just have a wardrobe full off ball gowns, costumes and accurate outfits from every decade and it honestly annoys me a little when teen shows just completely ignore that reality. There's shows where the fashion is one of the main aspects and that's ok but for all the other ones I do appreciate a bit of realism.

I think with Elena in the first few seasons regarding her fashion, it was very basic and boring, but it was relatable and most of all attainable. When you look at shows like PLL or Gossip Girl, sure they're more interesting outfits, for better or for worse, but it would be very hard to not only find the style of clothes they wear, but also to then style it like they do. But with Elena she wore purely "basics"/"staples". It was things that most people already had in their closet or if they didn't they could be able to find literally anywhere (Target, Hollister, H&M, etc.) It was also very relatable to what a high school girl would wear. Again with PLL or Gossip Girl, the outfits were more out there but a lot of the times it was difficult to ever imagine someone pulling up to their high school with these perfectly styled waves and a layered outfit with big chunky necklaces and high heeled boots, but with Elena, that was what most people were wearing. You roll out of bed, brush your hair, throw on a tank top and long sleeve and a pair of jeans and sneakers and you're good to go.
In regards to Elena's later fashion, I agree that it wasn't as suited to her personality. I keep mentioning PLL and GG but with those shows every character had these very over the top and dramaticized personalities. Spencer was "the smart one", Emily was "the sporty one", etc. they were very much characters, but Elena was much more representative of your average teenage girl that you'd meet at school and so her earlier season clothes really reflected that. It's also important to mention that Elena's straight hair was iconic in the sense of that's often how you'd tell Elena and Katherine apart, Katherine curled her hair and Elena straightened hers. Later on, I think the stylists were trying to give her clothes more of a personality of their own and also try to make her look older as she was now in college, but in my opinion her clothing choices made her look younger a lot of the time. Another thing is a classic staple tee and jeans will never go out of style even if it's not the most interesting. But with her later looks, they were more stylized to the year the show was made, and so it's more noticable because these clothes are now out of style.
I honestly think they should've stuck with the straight hair style for Elena bc both Elena and Katherine looked good with their hairstyles, but in later seasons they tried some curls for Elena that were not full enough to look good, so her hairstyle seemed to be middle of the road in a bad way. Basically, the hair change was a bad choice, same with all the jean shorts she got, and the tent tank tops
Yea, elena wore the basic everyday hs Girl outfit to school. It was relatable at the time and went with the fashion 2008-2010 when she wore those outfits the most.
@@LisaFevral Agreed. Elenas curls were not fitting her and distrracted me most of the times in the later seasons, because i missed her straight hair. Also, almost on every show the were girls with curled hair, and i myself have straight and very heavy hair that cant hold a curl for longer than an hour. So I loved how elena represented the straight hair look, with her styling choices it added to the relateability. But damn, every gilr on the show had such long eyelashes.

And yes, the show 9.9 out 10 times, replaced friendships, family, people's passions and goals with romance. The only ship I remember them not doing that with is Klaroline. I vividly remember the scene where Caroline tells him "I'm in college. I'm building a life for myself. I have plans and a future and things that I want, and none of those things involve you, ok, none of them."
Granted, they do have sex right after, but still
yeah it's just not enough for me when they try to act like all the bad things are ok to bear bc they're in love with someone. like no, parents dying is quite major, a 2 week relationship with some dude is not gonna be enough to fix that grief

Ive watched TVD until the 6th season, and before that I really liked, but as a fashion lover, I remember not vibing with their wardrobes haha, ppl in that time were like “okay, if you like fashion, Gossip Girl is a good show for you, the other shows about other things”, btw, even in this laters 2000, Katherine was always the best for me in all aspects

In the production's efforts to make Elena relatable, they made her boring. I DID buy sweaters and wore them over those fitted spaghetti straps though. Strange times.
Btw, I've always said this, but the TVD formula has always been Enter villain + Enter stronger villain + protags work with first villain to defeat stronger villain. Rinse and repeat.

This is so weird to me because I remember _loving_ the looks on this show, I had (and still have) so many tank tops and long sleeve shirts with that little button or lace detail like Elena wore on the first few seasons, and I remember liking Caroline's outfits as well.
I even dabbled in the leather jacket look for a second when I was obsessed with this show and also Supernatural, generally the CW show aesthetic at the time was layering leather jackets over Henleys for the most part lol.
But yea looking back, especially with the examples in this video, the looks in this show generally weren't that intricate. I suppose I must have been really distracted with how hot everyone on TVD was.
I was just obsessed with Katherine, so I would wear similar stuff, but technically speaking it's not unique at all ahah

0:49 I feel that. Romance is literally the most boring part of any story to me. If I like the romance part of a story, or (God forbid) like a story that as it's entire plot revolving around romance ; it means it is one of the most well written thing I have ever seen.
Yeah I can’t stand how much personal growth is not shown/done in so many stories just bc they think that saying “I love you” to someone is sufficient enough to solve their problems… it’s just a cop out for the writers
I looove romance, but indeed only as a side-story, not as the main reason it exists. If a story has no romance I usually don’t enjoy as much though, but if it’s all it has I can’t stand it (unless is Pride and Prejudice 😍)

I love romance. Romance stories/ Books are underrated at times, you can have an amazing story about people in love , but have other storylines a long with it Obviously everyone has their preferences, but to me vd is more than a romantic show anyway

Talking about the most importants outfits and your opinions about them: I like it when the female characthers were dressed in a basic style because I think this is more realistic than girls wearing dress and high heels to go to school or to fight against monsters LoL Also, most of people do not have a identity about their style, they just use what they want in the moment
I think that not every show needs to have icons outfits... Like, PLL had it and I think it suits well because it was a show about middle class girls, but TVD was about basic girls and a basic town. To presents more special style we had the parties and Katherine, who was a seductive 500 years old vampire. I don't know, I just think all of them suits well with their roles.
About Elena's blues dress: I also don't think this is iconic or special, but I think this suits well with her basic personality, specially because she wasn't that into the miss contest. And I also dislike her new style on the lasts seasons, but I think this fits with the time she was living at, because, at the end of the day, she was a teenager who was trying to grow up and trying hard to look hotter (IMO).
Anyway, the show could have made better decisions about the characthers clothes. I also dislike how everyone looked to dress the same leather jacket Lol

I don't think the red dress katherine wore in 1864 scenes is accurate. She's showing her shoulders. It would of been totally scandalous during that time for a woman to be showing any skin. Shoulders and ankles was like a no no.
yeah it does seem inappropriate for the time period. I do like it still, but not in the historical accuracy sense haha

Elena's style was plain but I personally think when they dressed her up in dresses they did well, love that Katherine always had good looks, classic black. I personally dont think they gave bonnie a consistent style. Caroline was more..light, flowery girly she wore dresses and flats and sometimes the skinny Jean's and darker colors. Dark colors were a theme for this shows fashion.

I don’t think my taste changed that much since my Vampire Diaries era (which did happen around my first year in high school). Black leather jackets and black jeans and are still my favourite look on me 😂 and despite not wearing them I love earlier Elena looks

Caroline had a very defined fashion sense that she stuck to for most of the show though??? Peplum/ girly tops, jeans and ballet flats. So many ballet flats.
I think they were inconsistent with her style, especially when she turned. But that’s an issue with all characters, they would give them a style and then rarely return to it as the series went on

And yess i’ve to agree that some of the earlier season’s looks were kind of better than the later ones, which somehow turn a bit dull at some point, especially for a supernatural tv show :d and speaking of series, now I’m curious what’s your take on “Emily in Paris”’s outfits XD i just luv seeing your intrepretations of the fashion in these diffrent tv shows and personally for a fashion-like series Emily in Paris has been… horrendous lately XD

I totally agree with you, I watched the show a while ago and this video, apart of bringing me memories, it made me see this style perspective that I wasn't aware of back in the days💗.

Have you ever watched Buffy? Would love to see a format like this for it. There were so many great outfits and when I watched it back then, I loved them so much but was too young to really wear them. The costume designers did a really good job telling a story through the outfits and hair and showing character development :)

You really capture the rose smoky aura of the series even with an upside down butterfly (I like it upside down) "Most things suit people who are attractive." absolutely. Related is it is also a misogynistic myth that makeup covers or hides anything people always look the same with or without it it hides nothing. Unless we are being tortured with phases of acne (we have all had them) & then pink or red spots are always visible with (bumpy discolored skin) or without makeup red spots, but probably more toned down with makeup. To other examples of this is people who get tattoos on their face or plastic surgery they also look the same with or without it & plastic surgery & huge lips & botox, & facial tattoos is not a preferred look for many people. Everyone has a way to manage their flaws (men & women) our whole lives because no one is a plastic doll. So the point is if someone is wearing make up & they are hot they are probably hot without it.

OK! suddenly playing took me out of the video! seriously, tho, watching TVD and The Originals I absolutely hate all the leather jacket outfits. Rebekah was constantly wearing a leather jacket and I'm just like, she lived through eras of incredible fashion just to resort to wearing this?!

Bonnie deserved SO much better and they played down the character so much even though she was interesting! Vampires Diares 100% had problematic undertones and moments, you were picking up on it.
