Admiral Bill McRaven reminds me of three Japanese Fathers I met close to 1953 in Malta, who talked to me as strongly as he does, about their own fallen patriot Children who were drugged by national Japanese propaganda to serve as Kamikaze pilots to protect their own country. Being their loving fathers, they did not talk with the same fervent enthusiasm and cold strong voice control of a US Admiral talking in this public speech, but they told me how their sons were promised great rewards in the afterlife, "flying like happy butterflies over the shimmering surface of a calm lake." On our side, we use religious quotes too, something like," Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying whom shall I send and who will go for us, and I said, Here am I, send me!." (05:07) This is what I can remember of what those Japanese fathers said to me. They said they hated the war. The Kamikaze pilots became one of the more recognizable units of the Japanese military, but their suicide tactic wasn't unique. Really, they were only one of the units under the umbrella of "Special Attack" forces similar to McRaven's special forces. There was a ground force in 1942 as a precursor to the Special Attack Forces similar to those of the US. They weren't exactly suicide missions but were small groups sent out at night, meant to decimate enemy bases with hit-and-run tactics. At least some of the men were expected to survive, though the mentality was the same - maximum damage with the least resources. But there were other official Special Attack forces, as those that attacked Bin Laden under McRaven's command. Atsushi Takatsuka mentions the Kaiten - human torpedoes. They have manned suicide torpedo missions. One man would be seated inside the torpedo and drive it into the side of an enemy ship, exploding on contact. In the same vein, there were also suicide crash boats and tiny submarines that served similar purposes. By the very end of the war, that desperation really cranked up, as did the suicide missions. Sometimes, individual soldiers would put on scuba gear and hide just off the coast, armed with explosives on bamboo sticks, destroying ships that passed over them. Or there were their land counterparts - soldiers who strapped bombs to their bodies and hid in pits, blowing up tanks that rolled over them. Possibility of Saki and other drink. Although the Japanese first developed methamphetamine (generically called hiropon and sold legally until 1951), here is no evidence that the Japanese navy or army made a practice of administering it to “Special Attack” pilots, who, whether as volunteers or acting under orders, were motivated sufficiently by peer pressure regarding “honor” and the devastation of their home cities, evident all around them, to defend their homeland by any means possible. There were some instances of hiropon being tried out on night fighter pilots to enhance their alertness and vision-which makes a lot more sense than using it on suicide pilots-but it was soon discontinued due to concerns over the side effects. No one has a right to play with the minds of young people and send them to their deaths. It does not make any difference if you call them Kamakaze suicide pilots, Female suicide bombers, or VOLUNTEERS as Admiral Bill McRaven calls, them after he pumps them up as he does. They are all the same when maimed or dead, and all the ceremonies and rituals organized after that, are for the benefit of the commanders who sent them and not the greaving parents, nor those maimed or dead. This is what all the Military commanders refer to," MEETING THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES." which is done in many " apparent" manners including apologies and offering two sheep to a father whose five children were killed accidentally by US soldiers under McRaven's command. I pity all nations who think that a better world can be had if we use the Military to fight each other. To advocate all this, though sometimes necessary, All Military Commanders need to be somewhat narcissistic, playing Dr. Jekyill and Mr. Hyde or living in between being a Devil at war and being a Saint in public. Not an easy act or role for any human to play as there could be some mental sickness associated with that behavior, but even the Holy Pope did it in the Holy Wars, 16th to 18th century, and in Malta, we suffered the consequences of that in 1565, against Suleiman the Great not to mention WW2 1939 to 1945. The Military in any country should learn to weigh up their own mad leaders and if the need arises, then kill them and not to obey them and go to annihilate and exterminate the innocent civilians on the other side. Recently in Malta, we had a number of immigrants from nearby troubled countries and my colleague tells me what the parents of two daughters acting as a Female suicide bomber told her. The parents could not stop them as the daughters were drugged with the propaganda preached by those concerned. We must call them, " The fallen children of unfortunate parents and sane people who hate war!" Female suicide bombers are women who carry out a suicide attack, wherein the bomber kills herself while simultaneously killing targeted people. Suicide bombers are normally viewed as male political radicals, but since the 1960s female suicide attacks have been on the rise. From 1985-2006, 15% of all suicide attacks were conducted by female suicide bombers. There are many organizations, such as Boko Haram (which is the first group to use females in a majority of their suicide bombings and surpassed the Tamil Tigers in using more female suicide-bombers than any other terrorist group in history), ISIS, and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, that recently started using women as tools in their attacks, since they are normally viewed as less of a threat than their male counterparts. This includes women having the element of surprise, a hesitancy to search females, increased publicity for female suicide bombing attacks, and the female stereotype as non-violent
When I served as a Commander in a veterans organization, I had that scripture (Isaiah 6.8) on a small piece of paper positioned in my brief case such that during the course of a meeting I could view it at a glance.
