  • Ash Sarkar went viral after a heated exchange with Piers Morgan led her to blurt out "I'm a communist you idiot". Thanks to "comrade Piers" she has since been interviewed by Teen Vogue and she is selling t-shirts. But what does it mean to be a communist in 2018 and can it ever be distanced from the horrors of Mao and Stalin?

      "Authoritarianism". Communism and capitalism both produce piles of corpses if you allow it to become authoritarian. What we want is democracy, then a suitable mixture of capitalism and communism can be slowly arrived at. People would be able to acquire capital, but there would still be some domains designated as a commons. Anytime a community shares ownership of an asset, like a village wind turbine project you can call that a form communism...SCARY!

The notion that you can establish a system whereby everyone would be "working for the common good" is nonsense. Communism is a state run Capitalism where you as a person have no say. When they see this comment, just know that they will call you all the "polacks" under the sun and will sound no different from the average, unread Ukipper. Nothing irks a socialist, especially a white one than those they claim to advocate on behalf of showing them that they are not mere abstracts in their minds , but fully dimensional human beings.
      A bit like the presumptive white female "anti racist" who always manages, somehow to put Black men at the top of the "victim ladder" not acknowledging gynophobia happens upon Black women , too. The only thing that can knock said black man off of the top of said victim ladder is if they show themselves to have a functional sentimental life that doesn't involve white women. You'd be surprised how many black men have had to fight racism from these types who are always surprised when they bring a black woman "to the party."
      That's why I will ALWAYS appreciate White so called working class out the neck racism to middle class , Lefty, liberal paternalism. The Paternalism always comes with unsaid racist/classist caveats...ALWAYS. Just like the Salvation Army, apparently palliative, wouldn't offer help until one "turned to The Lord" .
      And anybody of a certain age knows that 'Queuing for cabbage and dry bread" is a narrative wherever Communism lays wrought. Damn that may be one of the reasons that Central and Eastern Europeans don't generally fanny about with the "anti tacky" Northern European./ Northern European aspiring middle class usually tertiary educated "lets; self present as badly as possible sand still have the nerve to think that we know what's best for you" classist and no doubt racist narrative. You've suffered enough and know the healing powers of a bit of "shine".
      They would never step to Black people so flagrantly with this narrative which they always starts itself in a "anti southern European mores" type of way. Even as they claim to hate their own culture.

Let's leave that aside, communism is an ideology that demands the complete overthrow of the current established systems, which are thousands of times better than any other system of government ever, in favour of handing complete control of industry, labour and power to the state (under the thinly disguised veil of serving the people). Capitalism MAY have created powerful and greedy corporations, but these corporations provide comfortable salaries to millions of people the world over. communism simply replaces corporations with the state, which is infinitely more dangerous-the obvious danger being that unlike corporations, the state controls the army too. It's the perfect breeding ground for authoritarian govt, and historical examinations of the rise of the Soviet union and Mao's china provide proof of this.

    The transatlantic slave trade wasnt capitalism, it was colonialism and feudalism. Capitalism came after and is what created an environment in the West that allowed people be wealthy independent of chatel slavery and to therefore give good people the opportunity and means to abolish it. The North was a capitalist group of states that pioneered industrialization, mechanical advances and abolitionist thought. This made them leaps and bounds more wealthy than much of the American South. In the south the slave owners used government power to subsidize southern tobacco, cotton, sugar and other commodities. They couldn't compete with the North without big government intervention (Fyi southern slave owners were by and large Democrats) no institutional slavery can exist without government support.

    • @erikengheim1106
      @erikengheim1106 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Dennis, the problem is that people who are pro-capitalism will tend to exclude anything nasty from capitalism while they will freely associate anything bad with socialism or communism. Capitalist theory does not suggest that people should be colonized and exploited, but it often end up that way. Likewise Communism does not really promote oppressive genocidal dictatorship, but it happens to often have happened.
      You cannot just cherry pick the nice things like for your favorite ideology while unloading all the stuff you dislike on the ideologies you don't like.
      There is this false belief that being a capitalist, democrat state somehow makes you automatically nice and civilized. Yet we know such states have engaged in unspeakable horrors. When Britain colonized and exploited almost the whole world they were not an oppressive communist dictatorship. Likewise when the US eradicated most of the native population and enslaved blacks, it was supposedly a shining beacon of democracy and freedom in the world.
      There is this false belief that only evil things happen within a socialist context. Quite the contrary, I would say the combination of socialism and democracy has been the most humane experience. Socialists have been in power for decades in Nordic countries without ever instituting a despotic dictatorship, enslaving people, colonizing or engaging in genocide.
      Now they never actually made a socialist state in any Nordic country, but that is not my point. My point is that merely being a socialist, does not make you a tyrant. Why not accept that good and evil may exist within any economic or political system.
      It is however my claim that free wheeling capitalism will eventually lead to misery in some form. Either it will spark a violent communist revolution, turn into crony capitalism or fascism. Free wheeling capitalism are not stable societies. At some point inequality grows to levels where society collapse onto itself or survive through oppression and exploitation.

    21st century communism is pushed to the public via media platforms by middle class elites like these two, and telling young people that communism just hasn't been implemented correctly and that its always someone else's actions that caused it to fail. communism doesn't care about working class's people. It only serves the elites in the party, and keeps the workers poor or worse. Id love to see Owen come on here and interview self proclaimed fascists. As far as I'm concerned he is sympathetic to communism and its followers. He has a double standard of far left and far right politics. On the one hand saying fascism is all about murdering millions of people and keep white people at the top of the social heirachy and was perfectly shown in Germany and Italy. But when asked about the mass murders and corruption of communist regimes. He defends the ideology that caused them atrocities and gives it a open platform to people like us saying that it just wasn't done right. People should never embrace fascism and should equally never embrace communism both lead to the worst of humanity. Learn from the past.

Capitalism is a currently based systems where wealth can be exchanged to a greater or lesser degree in different forms(free-market, liassez-faire, social democracy). When people use the word 'Socialist' they often mean they advocate for social democracy like Norway, which is actually a heavily taxed form of capitalism.

If I refuse to contribute, will a mob come by force to take me away and put me in a labor camp, like that of any other historical communist state? That, by the narrowest of definitions, is still the ultimate in forceful control of the individual. If there is no force, then there's nothing to stop anyone from following their own basic human self interest by becoming a taker instead of producer. This would inevitably spiral into massive homelessness and massive starvation. Communism by any other name is still communism, and it always has a bad ending.
