At a time when many video essays are going into the ninety minute zone, the Nerdwriter is keeping his videos at a tight average of under eight minutes. If this had been someone else we probably would have gotten "To understand where the paparazzi started, we have to go back a little bit: There was a massive explosion of energy that began expanding into infinity..."

One of the reasons for that is that Nerdwriter is sticking to the subject at hand and not giving us "his opinions" on the subject as if they were facts, which so many reviewers and youtubers do now, making so much stuff on youtube truly cringy and unwatchable with how biased it is.
@@NelsonStJames most of those essay videos have a large focus, which takes a long time to get all the information out.
I found this so fascinating. I had just asked my dad the other week why they’re called “spaghetti westerns” and I found out they were all filmed in Italy.

Actually, most of them were filmed in Spain! They're called "spaghetti Western" because the people involved in the making of the film were all from Italy, first and foremost Sergio Leone (greatest director) and Ennio Morricone (greatest composer)!
@@olmomecene I believe half of the crew had to be from Spain to obey the rules at the time.

Someone nobody ever mentions is writer Ennio Flaiano, whom wrote the script for La dolce vita and came up with the name paparazzo. In his book "la solitudine del satiro" you can actually read and get a first person pov on via Veneto rise and downfall trough his eyes in the chapters called " the via veneto papers"
I just gave an exam on italian cinema from the 40's to the 70's... This video is really on point👌
A former music professor myself, I used to teach a course on jazz history, and West Coast (aka “Cool”) Jazz, while somewhat undeniably influenced by the slower pace of life in SoCal as compared to the hustle & bustle of New York, Chicago, and even NOLA, was irreparably influenced by Rome, Paris, and everywhere Hollywood went. Because even in music (or maybe that’s ESPECIALLY in music) the answer is, as always: Follow The Money. Some of the earliest pics of the Jazz greats passed out in alleys with needles in their arms came out of Rome.
The image of Mussolini with a "failure" arrow pointed at him is absolutely hilarious to me.

My school teacher made us watch "Roma città aperta" on the last day before summer break. I hated Neorealism ever since. Thanks for restoring my curiosity for this genre. Much of the footage used in this video shows places I grew up in and it is a strage feeling knowing how important they used to be not only for us but worldwide.
@Morra Why didn't it age very well may I ask?
It's one thing to watch films in class (which, of course, is always fun!). It's another to actually discuss the film and ask questions of why it is the way it is. All of my favorite professors/teachers brought some sort of understanding and perspective to each film we watched and how it helped evolve the cinematic grammar we know today. My teachers didn't simply make us watch films because they were "classics". They taught us what they brought to the table to help us in understanding film, its history, and film making as a whole.
You hated the movement because of one movie or that was just the first neorealist movie you happened to hate?
Clint Eastwood riding a scateboard is the best picture I've seen in my life.
I took an Italian cinema class in college, but I learned more from this video.

I get so excited every time Nerdwriter uploads a new video. So much so that I won't watch it until i've cleared my headspace to make sure i can really savour every bit of it. Happy to say that I am satisfied.
I have never been this early before, but I had to immediately click on a Nerdwriter video as his work is wonderful.

As an Italian, Mussolini wasn't just a dictator, he embedded himself and his rotten ideologies in the minds of Italians is such a way that we still have explicitly fascist parties running in politics and neo-fascism is sadly doing a comeback in the public's eye...
Yet, Mussolini didn't just build Cinecittà, he instituted the "Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia" a.k.a. one of the first nationally funded film schools of Europe... he also highly endorsed and was part of the immediate success of the Venice Film Festival. It's so sad to me that almost every major film related thing we have in Italy is a direct byproduct of fascism.

@@HorridDave sono anni che la destra normalizza comportamenti filofascisti, atteggiamenti retrogradi e razzisti che stanno rinvigorendo quei piccoli partiti ridicoli tipo Casa Pound e Forconi Uniti... ci sono anche video raccapriccianti di centinaia di persone (numeri rafforzati da NoVax e FiloPutin ugualmente ignoranti) a Predappio per la commemorazione del Duce e di altrettante centinaia in altre città a fare raduni e ritrovi con tanto di saluto romano. E se la risposta a quel che dico è "sono in quattro gatti e son ridicoli", per quanto mi trovi d'accordo, purtroppo son cose che vanno prese sul serio, in particolare tra i giovani... nella mia vita ho dovuto interagire con movimenti studenteschi di estrema destra che mi spaventano moltissimo.
@@HorridDave e riguardo Cinecittà: il problema non è Cinecittà in sé, anzi... il problema è che gli ultimi a far qualcosa di veramente importante per il cinema in Italia son stati i fascisti... forse con l'eccezione di Umberto Eco ed il DAMS negli anni '70. È un po' uno scandalo che si faccia così poco in un paese culturalmente ricco come il nostro.
Free Speech leads to an honest discussion and if fascism wins that means fascism was the most convincing ideology. Notice how left wing and progressive ideas can only survive with extreme censorship and free spaces inevitably become right wing.
Look at it from a more positive perspective...an Italian institution and industry created for nefarious reasons was turned around and has become an important (and highly influential) part of film history.

The name Paparazzo is actually a common surname in the town of Catanzaro. In 1897, George Gissing was visiting the town and was hosted by a man named Coriolano Paparazzo. The writer used this name in his novel "By the Ionian Sea", and was later paid homage by Fellini in "La dolce vita". That Anita Page story. I swear to god, Mussolini was such a weirdo for being the stereotypical hypermasculine dictator. According to Romano Mussolini, one of his sons, he once witnessed him weeping while watching Disney's Snow White. This is documented in a 90s interview to him by La Repubblica (one of the major Italian newspapers) which is quite controversial due to his allegations of Walt Disney himself being there (something that of course the company has always denied).
To his (very little) credit, everyone cried at Snow White at the time, and the way we view crying at these things now is different than it was decades ago. But yeah, it contrasted with the hypermasculine and almost stoic image he build.

I kept avoiding this because I was like "Who gives a damn about paparazzi? They're the worst." but then I saw it was a Nerdwriter video I hadn't seen yet and immediately watched it. Wasn't disappointed. Really good stuff.

No, we didn't "see ourselves in those flaws," the paparazzi tapped into something else entirely, schadenfreude. Pleasure derived from the misfortune of others is even greater when those suffering are perceived as undeserving of their wealth and fame.
'We're All Fanboys Now' really is the phrase that will keep on giving as popular cultural trends and communities rise and fall over time.
I love that you posted this only a couple of days after the anniversary of his death.

The degree to which the mannerisms of Mussolini remind me of my old boss are frankly borderline PTSD-inducing. There's a certain brand of toxic, vicious, violent Italian masculinity which has endured through the ages.
