moved into an apartment where someone left an old keg in the backyard for a few years. Watched your vid and I emptied the beast! We did not drink it. Cheers!
I was under the impression kegs are made of stainless steel, at least that's meant to be the case around these parts (Ireland). I'm hoping to turn one into a bbq or weld two together and make a right beast altogether 😁
Easy Peasy. Use your tap to empty and decompress before valve removal. Craftsman 1/8 screwdriver. Start at the thin edge and work it around, it comes right out. Without residual pressure in the tank there is hardly and tension on the locking ring.
Not the worst video, at least it is effective in demonstrating the principle of how to open this type of keg. I would suggest however that the proper wrenches for pulling apart the retainer ring are mentioned. Also, if you're doing it by hand the back end of a wooden spoon would be a better choice for pressing the ball bearing. Also, if you just want to get the pressure, you can tilt the keg.So the absolute last of the remaining fluids are not picked up by the pickup stem.
Just did mine....... And did just like he said but found that a good set of needle nose plyers help out ALOT. I pushed that ball in MULTIPLE times. First 2 times a ton of air came out then stopped then I pushed it in all far as it would go and held it...... nothing so I proceeded to take out the stem and hit the ball by mistake. Next thing I know beer is pouring all off my face. Lol!! So I said screw it I'm gonna keep going. After 5 min it was out. Thing is that beer had been sitting in there for well over 2yrs & micro brewed so it smelt so damn rotten. That sucked!!! If you do this....keep clear of the stem at all times, even if you think it's been depressurized 👍
A word of warning: If there is beer in the keg it will build pressure back up if you don't get the lock ring out quick enough. It's usually not enough to blow it through your jaw but if you let it sit long enough after "depressurizing" it will get ya and you'll get a nice beer shower to go with it.
If that hits you when it's not decompresses it will kill you. So this guy is right when he says I cannot stress this enough. They don't call this part of the keg the spear for no reason.
Moser breweries use a three step cleaning method or they should. Put step 1 n 2 require hot water and the 3rd cold. Step one is a caustic bath and this is to kill/ clean any left over organic material. Step 2 is a poni acid and this is mostly to protect the stainless steel. And this is done because step one is very tough on the metal,it leaches compounds from the surface while cleaning so by step 2 you are pulling all the stuff in the metal from deeper within and putting it back closer to the surface. This will extend the life of keg. Step three is a sanitizer bath. Check temps on cleaning agents for optimal use. Then once your ready remove keg fill with water and chemical put cap on then what we call walk the dog. Lay keg on side and roll it across the floor. I would do this for atleast 10 minutes. Then tip and drain. FLUSH KEG WITH WATER BEFORE NEXT STEP! Hope this helps.
I used two metal Square tubes to leaver (one on each side) down on the ring with the wrong side of a 2 inch hole saw using a wooden block to leave down on the teeth of the saw
If you have a keg Coupler, take all the fittings off, put your hand over the top hole and push the handle down. All the gas empties out. Then with the Coupler still down twist anti clock wise will unscrew the stem. Your welcome.
Can anyone give me a measurement of the open top valve? I’m failing to find measurements. I want to place a silicon bung in the top to reuse but need to know what size. Thanks!
this video should be No.1 on any Keg BBQ search..
👍🏼
This is a great video! I converted the keg to a coal burner for a drum smoker. Your video kept me from cutting the valve and pipe out. Thanks!
Damn..... I've needed this video for 10 years. Thank you much!!

Why didn’t you drink it?
I just got a keg for my fuel cell. I was about to cut the top of the nozzle off. Ive already decompressed it. Thanks for the video.
What about using a coupler to decompress the keg?...
Thank you for this video. I got 3 kegs from a junk removal job and now I want to turn these in as clean aluminum

@@kylearmstrong3456 To my understanding Kyle, they are Stainless still.
Also turning one into a bbq and using another keg for a log burner.

Just got me one of these and have been breaking my head on how to open, thanks

Thank you ! Can you tell me… does a beer keg have an inner plastic lining ? Like a pop can does? I want to heat water using propane in one.
Thank you man, you’re a lifesaver. Cheers

Thanks for the video seems like every one out there is for the other type that unscrews easy.
thank you sir you’ve taught me the ways of a god.
True-- was knocked over from a keg that was under pressure (sitting in heat ) cap hit between the eyes. Crossed ever sense.
Lmao that's funny
Since when though?
If the keg has been sitting for over a year, will it still have a lot of carbonation?

Why not use the beer tap to decompress the keg? Same way you got the beer out.
Retaining ring is simple. Just find the end hanging down and work it outline a slinky.
Thank you! Dont want to end up with summer teeth!
Summer teeth, some aren't!

Very well explained Sir.
Simplest so far 👍🏼 thanks
How do they clean out the keg when it is empty and they have to clean and sterilize the keg ???
@@noneshere Got it fella. Thanks

@@Prickly-Brew Actually this really clears up any ambiguities I had with the process Todd. Now I can pay homage to the beer GODS. SALOOTE !!!
@@victoryfirst2878 if you want to know anything else just ask. I’ve been brewing beer on a commercial scale now for 20+ yrs.
@@Prickly-BrewShame you are not near my location Sir. Would love to try your beer. What is the hardest beer to brew ??
Hey once you open it can you put juice inside of it
no its illegal
You can do what ever you want to, just don't tell anyone
How do you re seat the circlip when reinserting the spear?
I used two metal Square tubes to leaver (one on each side) down on the ring with the wrong side of a 2 inch hole saw using a wooden block to leave down on the teeth of the saw
Just did this, on 2 covered with a towel and hit valve with a bolt and hammer, aimed away from me, worked ok
We we hear pressure being relieved so we know its safe to proceed?
I’m just tryna get the beer inside cuz i don’t got a tap🤣
Great video thanks so much!
I decompress a keg on its side so no liquid flies out

Thanks for this video pal
Any idea how to get the retaining ring out with handle stuck? I forgot about the fka and now it's stuck!! I've got some out
Go get your snap ring pliers from your auto toolbox nd use the right tool for the job, versus hacking at it with a screwdriver.
Danger! Please don't do this to your kegs! Use a sanke coupler with an open beer line to decompress.
Compromising pressure vessels is dangerous!
I've always wanted to remove the ball bearing from one of these.
Easier to compress the valve while getting the key ring out. It Takes the pressure off the ring.
Now I know how.
Thanks bud.
Bro just push the ball bearing in with your finger to release the pressure. Yall acting like this is at 8000psi
Cheers mate, just subbed
Great video.

The inside dimension is 2". A 1 1/2" PVC cap fits it good.
Thanks for that buddy. 👍🍺
This is a terrible instructional joke. Get a keg coupler, possibly remove the one way valve ball, fill out empty as required.
No this is how it’s done but he forgot to tell you guys that some stems screw in.
Better description of delating is like a tyre.
Mine is stuck in there and won't come out
Thanks
Where’s part 2 ?
Hi, what the fiting type is?
That's a Sankey D type
Nice
Nice
Lock stock an barrel
Man what happend to ya arm ..werewolf fight or some shit lol jk
.
European kegs are soo much easier and safer without any circlip crap
Verguita
Never mind. Too risky.
Thank you 🙏🏼
People have been killed before from those spears launching out
Why not lay it on the side and let it shoot to the side? SUP human beings?
Exactly what I just thought
now put it back. lol.
Wascally Wabbit I did that part. It was difficult. And now I can't undo it. So I'm here.
My Keg doesnt have the two holes on either side, So I cant even get it off at the moment
Midnigh7X is it a screw in. Release the pressure and then use screw driver and hammer on tabs to unscrew it to the left
Decompression
