You see, that's what I love. She's young. She's has a different sphere of reference. She's young. I didn't know Tom Waits, picked up Closing Time, in 1988. Fell in love with falling in love. Stupid romantic. Paid the price. But it was worth it. Your a gentleman for supporting her.

@@thebillryan what he wrote is correct. Waits is a acquired taste and for me it's a taste I want seconds for. Love Waits. Seen him live in Canada, United States and in Amsterdam a few times. Tom Waits has a huge following in Europe and very popular. Even more so there than in America in my opinion. Either way he is one of the greatest lyricist and musician and actors there is...that just my opinion. I second what Michael Reisel wrote

But the older I get the more I hear myself in his voice. I hear someone who has seen too many years and too many miles, but who still has beauty in his soul to share with others. When hearing the raspy, expressive voice of Tom Waits it is difficult for some people to understand what a treasure he is. The first time we heard him perform many, many years ago, we wondered if he would ever catch on, but he grows on one. The fact is he is a storyteller, a poet, a writer of tunes that usually don't find themselves on radio stations. However, his compositions have been recorded by numerous performers, likely because of their unique storytelling poetry. Some of the artists who have recorded his music include Johnny Cash, Bob Seeger, Norah Jones, Bruce Springsteen, Willy Nelson, The Ramones, and others. See: Tom Waits - Wikipedia

The best advice i ever received for Tom was to work chronologically... he evolved so much and reinvented himself multiple times (a la bowie).... this is pretty early on, but he was already quite different here than on his first record. True legend. Songwriting hero.
Loved seeing you get “settled in”. Like once the shock value wore off, you took the ride. Kudos.
Tom’s voice... i’ll say... is not for everyone. But i think there is a quality in it that some of us... some of us... see in ourselves. This song is about being completely down on your luck. Somebody who has completely lost everything. You cant have donny osmond sing about that. You need a voice that reflects it. Tom is that voice... and spoiler alert... most of his songs are... deep in meaning, and not very chipper. But believe it or not, he has a tremendous sense of humor. I think a lot of folks... myself included... can easily and readily identify with his voice. It can be grating and beautiful at the same time. Few other ls can make that claim

If you want him without the gravel, listen to anything from 'The Early Years' albums, although in my opinion this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. If you try to connect the singing with the story of the song it might make more sense to you. Another thing you might want to listen for is how completely pitch perfect his singing is, and just the general cadence of the song and again how it works with the story.

His voice hasn't always been like this. Tom Waits is someone you either get or you don't. I recommend exploring his discography, starting with the first album and go through them. It's worth it. Tom reeks of character. Brilliant songwriter, musician, and storyteller. One of my favorites and initially was someone who had to grow on me. Introduced my father to him and he grew to love him as well. He got remarried after divorcing my mom and that woman can't stand Tom Waits either. Can't say I'm surprised that I don't like her either. Usually don't get along with people who are incapable of understanding the beauty of Tom Waits. Who get too stuck on what's on the surface. Funny that your kid was more open to it and loved it. She's a cool girl.

Man did I fall in love with Tom Waits, I'm 60 now still love him(not the totally crazy stuff, I mean he can get OUT THERE) but 'Small Change' &' The Heart of Saturday Night' let alone hits for other singers 'Jersey Girl'( Springsteen) ' Downtown Train'( Rod Stewart) ' Old 55' (Eagles) then 'Bad as you' ( his latest). I love it personally. The song is an Australian bush ballad & is considered the countries unofficial national anthem, he took it & put a new spin on it. When people new to Waits are held back, at first, by the voice, they're often then taken in to the sweetness and compassion within.
And I don't mean sentimentality, I mean truthfulness.
Yes, there's the playfulness of the circus performer or gruff comedian, but Waits is the consummate artist.
A composer of true originality, a magnificent lyricist, an incomparable vocal stylist, a worldy-wise humourist. His work assimilates and transcends so much that is great from the rich seam of not only American music, but of 20th century literary, dramatic, poetic and visual arts.
Hence, just as the influence of Charles Bukowski's poetry is clear in Waits's work (not to mention the themes and moods of Edward Hopper's paintings), here is a musician whose seamless move towards avant-garde musical theatre is testimony to the fact that he's one of those rare few for whom innovation comes with age.

The first Waits albums have a more musical voice, and likely got his songs picked up by Springsteen, notably "Heart of Saturday Night." Then his voice grew into a mix of Howlin' Wolf, Louis Armstrong, and a thousand too many whiskeys with cigarette butts. Still, his lyrical fusion experiments after a while become a new sort of music, where the poetry, vivid imagery, and truly offbeat instrumental accompaniment meld into a unique yet authentic result. Your child gives him a 9/10; perhaps there is hope for us after all!
"Hold On," 1999, displays the full paradox of the best Waits - a plaintive, melancholy but beautiful melody, poetic allusional lyrics that touch down to the ground just enough to frame an impressionistic image of fraught emotional truths. Striking comments in the TH-cam describe real people in desperate moments, brought back from some dark edge by listening to Waits songs. Not everyone may feel it, but for those who do, there are so very few contemporary singer/songwriters who take any genuine risks, to move us to tears, and so we may find healing in the shared pain.
The HBO series "the Wire" used "Way Down in the Hole," and the video is genuinely frightening, in a way that ordinary shock effects can't replicate - the darker side to a full-on genius, like him or not: th-cam.com/video/Xw2MjRcVO4g/w-d-xo.html

I was in a Cathedral in Tondawanda NY and the deepest operatic voice was singing that day for mass and I kept trying to clear my throat. Tom is cool. He was the weapons seller in the movie Mystery Men. Maybe for little girls it's like a Grampa voice. I wonder how Quebec would take his meddling with the Waltzing Matilda song

The beginning was difficult to understand but as it went on it became very interesting. His voice will never be heard in an opera, but the topics he writes about and sings the stories about strangely enough. Fit his voice. Four Sheets to the Wind may give you a clue. I felt the angst of an aging alcoholic reminiscing about a friend from his past. Loneliness and regret are demonstrated by this song and by Tom’s performance. I’m going to look up some more of his work to check it out. Strangely enough it grabbed me.

I think people like Tom Waits' voice for the same reason they like the voice of singers like Louis Armstrong: it's a voice of a person that's lived a full life. For Louis, it could be considered a life full of happiness and optimism, where as with Tom, he's a man down on his luck holding onto a single image of beauty because it's all he has left.

First time I saw Tom was on Fernwood 2Nite. At first I thought it was a gag, but since, I have come to appreciate his style and the world he creates. Perhaps Traubert is not the best place to start. When he first started out, his style was more mellow but years of consuming cigarettes, liquor and drugs took their toll on his vocals and actually made the voice match the material. His albums have always been a step to the left of a bukowski reality. He created one of the saddest funny songs or vice versa. Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis, Try that on.

Tom Waits voice is the perfect example of a thing being both ugly and beautiful simultaneously. His voice can drive some away, but those who listen deeper eventually come to enjoy listening to him. One of the greatest songwriters of all time and also a very good actor. Try listening to his first album, his voice is a touch less gruff, and the songs are terrific.

If you had to pick someone to read out these lyrics to you, which do you think would have a longer lasting impact on you - your 28 year old cousin or your 87 year old grandfather? That's the answer to why people like his voice.

  • @jameswilson8433

"Why would anyone like that voice?" Because it's the only voice that can properly sing his lyrics. There has to be a certain level of pain and cynicism. Try "Step Right Up", a selection of advertising slogans strung together over a walking bassline in F. th-cam.com/video/yGShQsxiy1c/w-d-xo.html Incidentally, fun fact, the topless girl on the album cover is Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
