*gravelly vibrato* You gotta mow it east to west, trim it end to end, And when you're done the row, you gotta push it back again. Yeah, that sun beats down, but you gotta get it done. When your throat gets parched, Jimmy Beam's your friend. Yup. Seems legit to me. XD
I'm not a religious person. I don't believe in any god. But every now and then I feel like I have to listen to this song because I feel small and I need forgiveness or consolation like any other person.
For me it's just the opposite. I lost my mother and brother to suicide. Left me changed. This song for me is a call to come back to life from the cold loneliness of exile. Drop the burden, the old wound, the chronic complaint, and come on up to the house of your soul. Invite friends over.
Amen Brother… that was a cruel hand to be dealt, it’s more than enough to lose a friend in that manner 😔 I hope you have persevered & taken many strides forward into YOUR deeper life…☝️& invited your friends Up to the House 🏡 Cheers 🍻 & all the best - 🌻
This song is exactly about what you're experiencing - not the "opposite". Song is about acceptance. We all have our issues and everyone's flawed in some way, no-one's life is perfect and it's not always fair. The song is about climbing down from the cross of victimization and coming up to the house to join others and start doing something worthwhile. "All your cryin' don't do no good." i.e. stop whining and start chopping some wood for the stove.
I will never be able to listen to this song without thinking about one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever encountered in life. Strangely enough, it was in rehab, and we bonded over music. Even made beautiful music together. We discussed this song at length late into the night and I will never forget it. JJ, if you ever see this, know that you changed my life and I’ll love you forever. I hope you’re doing well and you have your daughter back. We will meet again someday. Come down off the cross, we can use the wood. 🖤
I was lucky enough to have first heard this song live During a Tom Waits concert. I wept Like a baby, sorry. But since hearing it, it has had relevance in my life many time times. Goddamn, Beautiful song. Thank you god for my family, and my life
Indescribably beautiful lyrics and a musician/singer talented beyond words. We owe a lot to Tom Waits for inspiring us in our darkest hours. I am from India and listen to this song daily. It pushes me to not giving up in the most adverse circumstances.
in my opinion the song is rather cheerful. i think "the house" represents a person or a group of persons that know exactly what you are going through because they have been there too. so whenever life fucks you up you can go to a place that will listen and provide support. thats a comforting thought
I just threw together some random chords on the piano, then looked them up on a website that shows the chords of popular songs and found this. this song is so emotional, so caring, yet somehow still happy at the same time. It's confident you will get through your trials, while also experiencing them in a complete way. It's a perfect response to what i was feeling when i happened to pick those 4 chords to play on piano. There is something about this music that carries that feeling of sadness yet confidence, even if there were no words. I don't know anything about the artist, but they put their whole heart and soul into this song, and i can feel that.
Don,t be nailed, come down and work with us. Come on up to the house. Father gets busy, and a Son never forget. So come on up to the house. If there is light in the tunnel, much came threw . Come on up to the house. If you dont believe in god thats true, your ancestors waiting for you. Come on up to the house.
The house is the peace of oblivion... From whence we came, so shall we return to non-existence... The world is not our home, we are just passing through... No light in the tunnel, no irons in the fire... No Heaven, no Hell... Tom Waits is obviously an unbeliever. This is agnostic gospel.
There is so much emotion within the tunes of this song. I instantly felt connected and at ease the moment I heard it. Very beautiful and calming lyrics.
I didn't think it was possible to love that song more than I already did, but this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen and complements it perfectly.
Saved my life. Alcohol drugs cutting myself putting cigarettes out on my arm(something that happened to me when I was young) I pushed people away because i din't trust and messed everything up because I thought they ere out to get me, on top of my own self abuse( whipped by the forces that are inside you) He really let me know its ok. That things happen for a reason. That if you let it go to what happened, you too can be ok. Listen to the man, he's more than another songwriter, he knows!
This is probably one of the best music video's I have ever seen. Incredible song, incredible video. "The world is not my home, I'm just'a passin' through". Beautiful.
Anna Reed if there is one thing my main man Tom is not, it's underrated. He's a world renowned genius with a decades long, rabid and enormous cult following of people who'd gladly take a bullet for the man. He's just not a fixture of pop music and that's probably a good thing in the end.
The OC used the word underrated which is an insult to this great man and musician. People who know about music, know about Tom Waits. And I'm talking millions of people across the world. "Most people" is not accurate. He's a legend and the sort of people who have missed this extraordinarily popular artist are not the determiners of how well rated he is. Just because ya'll haven't heard of him doesn't mean he is underrated. I wouldn't bother but it matters. Or maybe it doesn't. Whatever.
No offense but Orange is the new black.. seriously.. but hey I don’t watch tv series so I don’t know what I talking about.. just glad you found this song anyway.. cool 😎
This is a joy to play on my 36-string folk harp. Practicing it to play tomorrow morn at a memorial service honoring a beloved patriarch for whom I played said harp at a hospice where he died. The family requested Southern Gospel. This will fit right in. Thanks Tom!
This is the greatest thing that has happened to me today. I took a walk today after hearing this on Orange is the New Black. It was a very peaceful and pleasant one. It let me know that everything was going to be alright and that I can take my problems to God. The thing is I don't believe but I got the message...
I just heard this song for the first time in the movie,Change In The Air. I came looking for its soundtrack, couldn't find it,but remembered this song and searched for it. The song catches so much of the heart of the film. It will be in my head for days.
Tom Waits is one of my all time favorite singer song writers of all time. True musical genius. And if you haven't heard any other of his songs or seen some of his funny old interviews, even his parts in movies... definitely take a peek. Interesting and amazing.
Lyrics Well, the moon is broken and the sky is cracked Come on up to the house The only things that you can see is all that you lack Come on up to the house All your crying don't do no good Come on up to the house Come down off the cross, we can use the wood You gotta come on up to the house Come on up to the house Come on up to the house The world is not my home I'm just a-passing through You got to come on up to the house There's no light in the tunnel, no irons in the fire Come on up to the house And you're singing lead soprano in a junkman's choir You got to come on up to the house Does life seem nasty, brutish and short Come on up to the house The seas are stormy and you can't find no port Got to come on up to the house, yeah You gotta come on up to the house Come on up to the house The world is not my home I'm just a-passing through You got to come on up to the house, yeah You gotta come on up to the house Come on up to the house The world is not my home I'm just a-passing through You got to come on up to the house There's nothing in the world that you can do You gotta come on up to the house And you been whipped by the forces that are inside you Gotta come on up to the house Well, you're high on top of your mountain of woe Gotta come on up to the house Well, you know you should surrender, but you can't let it go You gotta come on up to the house, yeah Gotta come on up to the house Gotta come on up to the house The world is not my home I'm just a-passing through You gotta come on up to the house Gotta come on up to the house You gotta come on up to the house Yeah yeah yeah
It's a song in many ways about shelter, similar in ways to Shelter From the Storm, but Tom puts it in revival tent style to give it added depth. Sometimes troubles come from outside, ie moon/night, sky, seas or from inside, 'the forces inside you'. Just an invite from ole Tom to say if life ain't treatin' you well, come in and have some tea. This is all temporary.
Dylan's tune is an homage to the divine Goddess and the ' shelter ' she can bring . Tom's ' House' is a place of refuge for the weary soul . So yeah .... interesting comparison .
I watched this while high and it's like a mantra. The beating, pumping heart of resilience no matter what horrors it finds within itself. Terrifying, really -- the sort of thing that drives men to zen & creative ambition. To alleviate suffering, all hail, the Bodhisattva, the angel that chose to remain fallen to be within us, to give us hope from the other side that all can be well. The Kingdom of God, the same nothingness described by God/Jesus & Buddha -- the Grand Nothing, to whom Not Knowing is Most Intimate!
Wonderful video that to me really captures the song. Respect to all the interesting opinions on the meaning. My own take is that it is a song about getting help when you need it. 'Coming on up to the house' reminds me of an invitation you would get as a kid playing in the neighbourhood and you've had a fall or later in life after a funeral you would be asked.'come on up to the house' where you get comfort and strength from others.Oh, for some reason there's a smell of fresh bread in the house!
One of my favourite songs on the album along with Pony and What’s He Building In There? . Awe-inspiring. Magnificent lyrics too. ‘Come down off the cross - we can use the wood’.
this video is absolutely wonderful..... "The only things that you can see Is all that you lacking Come on up to the house..." what a brilliant piece of music....
I absolutely adore this song. And video... Its very raw but so incredibly real. And yes I agree- tears seem to just come up listening to this. "The world is not my home I'm just passing through" Biblical but honest about life in so many ways...
AWESOME!! AWESOME!! AWESOME!! AWESOME!! I bought this album when it first came out and this is the first time I have seen this. WOW!! His videos never cease to surprise me.

Tom could sing about the correct way to mow a lawn and it would still be captivating and heartwrenchingly beautiful

All the lawn is green
One of the best lyrics ever - "...Come down off the cross, we can use the wood."
I feel the exact same.
I agree!
And this - "And you're singing lead soprano in a junkman's choir"
Absolutely agree!!
I always thought it was “a drunk man’s choir”
I'm not a religious person. I don't believe in any god. But every now and then I feel like I have to listen to this song because I feel small and I need forgiveness or consolation like any other person.
My thoughts exactly....cheers
+Tuuli Hypén Jesus died for your sins...All can be forgivin'
Cmdr Jay It's all about faith
Fuck yourself if you don't believie in the God.
For me it's just the opposite. I lost my mother and brother to suicide. Left me changed. This song for me is a call to come back to life from the cold loneliness of exile. Drop the burden, the old wound, the chronic complaint, and come on up to the house of your soul. Invite friends over.
This is a beautiful thought on the song. I felt the same way. It opened up my mind
That's beautiful brother. I hope you came back home, to your soul. And I hope you had every friend over for a hell of a party.
Opposite? What do you mean by the opposite? Opposite to what?
Amen Brother… that was a cruel hand to be dealt, it’s more than enough to lose a friend in that manner 😔 I hope you have persevered & taken many strides forward into YOUR deeper life…☝️& invited your friends Up to the House 🏡 Cheers 🍻 & all the best - 🌻

The entire song is summed up by the line, "You know you should surrender, but you can't let go."
He is such a brilliant musician, and there is so much wisdom in his lyrics. Absolutely the most under-appreciated artist ever.
Worth remembering Hobbes lived into his ‘90’s🎉
My funeral song.

This song is so filled with true hope..... In my fathers house there are many rooms
I'm an atheist, but when Tom Waits sings the gospel then I want to believe.
it's not even about believing
I always listen to this when I have tough times or shitty days. Tom is a living legend.
I discoverd this Song today from the Netflix Docu "Sly" Nice Song
everyone should have to listen to this song at least once..
Thank you Orange is the New Black! For helping me discovering this wonderful song. I love it :D

I love this song. Its about forgiveness and grace and comfort after a long, hard road.
"Come down off the cross we can use the wood." Perfect. SO MANY PERFECT WORDS HERE. The whole song is perfection. 💞💖
in my opinion the song is rather cheerful. i think "the house" represents a person or a group of persons that know exactly what you are going through because they have been there too.

My 5 year old nephew just died a few hours ago. I think this is the time for good old Tom to set the mood
So sorry for your loss. Enjoy the music the best you can.
I love the reference to Thomas Hobbes in this song "...and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short". Amazing lyrics!
There is so much emotion within the tunes of this song. I instantly felt connected and at ease the moment I heard it. Very beautiful and calming lyrics.
Yea, well said Mikie
I didn't think it was possible to love that song more than I already did, but this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen and complements it perfectly.

Listen to the man, he's more than another songwriter, he knows!
His sarcasm is addictive, hilarious and to the utmost or most absolute extent profound! I love his Banter! Peace, Light and Much Love to All!!
Cry like a baby every time I hear it. Live in Paris in May 2000 this resulted in a standing ovation and applause that lasted for over 20 minutes.
You listen to this song when you're happy, but you hear it when your depression & anxiety is up.
This is probably one of the best music video's I have ever seen. Incredible song, incredible video. "The world is not my home, I'm just'a passin' through". Beautiful.
Tom Waits' genius is beyond under appreciated.
"come down off the cross, we can use the wood"
amazing inspiring genius
Tom Waits brought me here.
Sammeh92 Very underrated comment. Made me literally lol, which is rare, so thank you.
Now then, back to my sad songs.
glad people are finding this song! saved my life more than once. Tom Waits is one of the greats.
always tugs a tear
Without Orange is the new black I think I would have died without listening to this brilliant song because this is so underrated. Real talent

We're all saying the same thing. More people need to listen to him. Stay cool.
No offense but Orange is the new black.. seriously.. but hey I don’t watch tv series so I don’t know what I talking about.. just glad you found this song anyway.. cool 😎
Tom Waits was a giant section of my playlist when I was a bad alcoholic. It's really good drinkin' tunes. Still good now being sober too!
the world is not my home im just passin through. great!!!
This is a joy to play on my 36-string folk harp. Practicing it to play tomorrow morn at a memorial service honoring a beloved patriarch for whom I played said harp at a hospice where he died. The family requested Southern Gospel. This will fit right in. Thanks Tom!
This is the absolute best fan video ever for any band ever.
It's the most beautiful song I ever heared in my life. Period.
I always come back to this
This is the greatest thing that has happened to me today. I took a walk today after hearing this on Orange is the New Black. It was a very peaceful and pleasant one. It let me know that everything was going to be alright and that I can take my problems to God. The thing is I don't believe but I got the message...
I saw this many moons ago and I’m so happy it’s still here! It’s insanely good and creative. Should have millions of views
Tom Waits -- the greatest gospel singer ever!
"Well your high on top of your mountain of woe"...fantastic song, fantastic lyrics, fantastic Tom.
I just heard this song for the first time in the movie,Change In The Air. I came looking for its soundtrack, couldn't find it,but remembered this song and searched for it. The song catches so much of the heart of the film. It will be in my head for days.

this is the song i needed today
Only a genius lyricist can reference Hobbes. Beautiful song. Favourite line - "Come down from the cross, we can use the wood". Brilliant!
gonna get me a Tom Waits tatto tomorrow. Lived with this music for 40 years now. I´m sure Mr Tom´s face fits onto my right arm....
this is one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard
Wow!! I think Tom would love this. Hope he gets to see it at some point. Great work! Thanks
By far the best song about consolation I know...they may play it on my funeral.
Lyrics
Well, the moon is broken and the sky is cracked
Come on up to the house
The only things that you can see is all that you lack
Come on up to the house
All your crying don't do no good
Come on up to the house
Come down off the cross, we can use the wood
You gotta come on up to the house
Come on up to the house
Come on up to the house
The world is not my home
I'm just a-passing through
You got to come on up to the house
There's no light in the tunnel, no irons in the fire
Come on up to the house
And you're singing lead soprano in a junkman's choir
You got to come on up to the house
Does life seem nasty, brutish and short
Come on up to the house
The seas are stormy and you can't find no port
Got to come on up to the house, yeah
You gotta come on up to the house
Come on up to the house
The world is not my home I'm just a-passing through
You got to come on up to the house, yeah
You gotta come on up to the house
Come on up to the house
The world is not my home
I'm just a-passing through
You got to come on up to the house
There's nothing in the world that you can do
You gotta come on up to the house
And you been whipped by the forces that are inside you
Gotta come on up to the house
Well, you're high on top of your mountain of woe
Gotta come on up to the house
Well, you know you should surrender, but you can't let it go
You gotta come on up to the house, yeah
Gotta come on up to the house
Gotta come on up to the house
The world is not my home I'm just a-passing through
You gotta come on up to the house
Gotta come on up to the house
You gotta come on up to the house
Yeah yeah yeah
thanks
Th
e world is not my home I'm just a-passing through!
thank you, goodness gracious, thank you!
A real jewel of a song, one of Tom Waits best efforts.
Tom Waits has some fantastic, eclectic, and incredible music. But this one is my favorite. Everything about it just works so perfectly.
Tom "waits" still.... and forever
Great lyrics and even better presentation.
Terrific work. It's so good I won't link it till morning, when my east coast peoples are awake. Thanks!
The most beautiful song in the world
My God. His voice just gives me the feels.
Yes. Also your face.
This is the best song i have ever heard, Nothing could fit my life more than this. Im greatfull ! But im happy. Dont worry folks!
What a great voice... and song... and video!
The scream at the end always gets me.
So much passion in this blues man.
This song saved and keeps saving my life
"Whipped by the forces that are inside you'
It's so amazing to me. Every time I listen. I cry and feel a giant smile at the same time
Just amazing
Thank you
I watched this while high and it's like a mantra.
I always come home.
This is magnificent.
Thank you.
This song, along with "Cold Cold Ground" and "Dirt in the Ground" comprise the triad of Waits tunes I want playing at my funeral
Tom Waits is a living legend. Best songwriter ever.
thank god for tom waits
Tom Waits is simply the best artist today.
My favourite line is 'There's no light in the tunnel, no irons in the fire', just the way he sings it out is amazing! Such a beautiful song.
i think it's the most beautiful video made for the most beautiful song ever.
My dad introduced me to this man, this was the first song I heard while driving with my father, totally reminds me of him
Whipped by the forces that are inside you ... Oh! What poetry!
One of my favourite songs on the album along with Pony and What’s He Building In There? . Awe-inspiring. Magnificent lyrics too. ‘Come down off the cross - we can use the wood’.
I love this song so much--- Tom Waits music is such a gift. So is this video. amazing.
That voice is awesome
This is one for the ages! Tom, you sir are the man.
My heart beat is raising and there's a tear in my eye... Oh Tom!
Perfect Video, another Perfect song by Tom Waits....
Painstaking - and worth it. Brilliant. And pool, you did your father proud.

this video is absolutely wonderful.....
"The only things that you can see
Is all that you lacking
Come on up to the house..."
what a brilliant piece of music....
“Come down off the cross; come on up to the house!” Amazing lyrics.
No message, just a nice invite to a relaxing place of sanctuary. beautiful !
This song has especially touched me today...
