  • In this video we enjoy the fantastic lead vocals of Tarja Turunen, Anette Olzon, and Floor Jansen. We want you to answer the question: WHO DID IT BETTER? Come on, let us hear from YOU! (Respectfully, of course!)
NIGHTWISH - Replacement Singers - Who Did It Better? Tarja Turunen - Annette Olzon - Floor Jansen
Nightwish is probably the biggest symphonic metal band that's ever existed, which made stepping into the role of lead singer a pretty tall order.
We’re going to compare how Tarja Turunen, Anette Olzon, and Floor Jansen all measured but I want to hear from you! Who do you think did it better and why? Please share with me in the comments!
Tarja has a very operatic approach with pure, bel canto vowels which she integrates with belting and she’s able to go up into her upper register and throw down pretty hard.
We’ll compare her style next to Anette’s who brought more of a pop, ABBA-type sound to the band and we’ll finish by looking at the way that Floor was able to combine the two styles together.

Yes, Floor proves everyone wrong on anything about singing. To clarify, Floor might not be the best singer on planet but she's one of very few who don't just have a great voice or a good understanding of music. Floor goes one step further and combines her voice and her technical skills with her knowledge of music theory and her acting skills to play with emotions like no other singer I know ever could. So when she is on stage it's not just her voice, each move, each blink of an eye she does and every gesture is well thought through and helps to tell the storys and that is what Nightwishs music is mostly about, they are telling stories and because of that, Floor is the best choice for Nightwish, none of the other Singers were able to do that at this level.

Tarja was very unique at the time. Annette was put in a bad spot trying to sing the classic Tarja songs. Not possible. I do think like you that the 2 records with Annette may be my overall favorites from Nightwish. Studio was great, but live Floor takes almost all of them to a whole new level. Respect to Tarja and Annette. Floor Jansen 100%!!!!!!!!!

👍Do,i get what you are saying,it's funny in a way how people react to the studio albums. A lot of people like the two studio albums with Annette, but seem to like Floor more singing most of these songs.😆 Stylistickly and tone wise i like Floor the best, but i have great respect for all 3 singers.
Also ,with these "discussions",sometimes people bring up the MOST sold records, wich are Annette's albums, if i'm right, but i have searched the internet for DVD or B-Ray 's selling numbers, but couldn't find any. I gues that "showtime storytime" must be a best seller to and "end of an era" with Tarja also would have pretty good sales numbers.
Just saying, not knowing the whole picture gives a little distorted view.😉🤘

I just began listening to Nightwish this year 2021. I came across the band while watching "The Charismatic Voice" reviews on TH-cam. So, I don't have the years and years of history with the band as many others have. However, I quickly began a deep dive into their music, live performances, and other online reviews. I purchased two of their DVD's (one with Tarja and one with Floor) and bought a ticket to their concert next year in LA, 2022. The music and melodies of Nightwish are amazing!! I have to say that I've been impressed by all three vocalists in the band. And I agree with Ken that the recorded albums of Annette are phenomenal vocally and musically. With that said, if I were to choose a favorite vocalist it would be Floor. She's got it ALL!! I'm so glad I came across this band online. Better late than never!!

But Im in love with the old Nightwish, their songs, and the chemestry with music composition and Tarja's voice. I also like very much Tarja's solo career she has great songs very emotional and epics and she has also a classical career. You can find videos of Tarja singing ave marias, Puccini, Bach, etc and is amazing. Metal, Rock, Pop, Electronic, Classical, she can sing anything.
If we measure with points: Tarja 100, Floor 99, Annette 90. In my opinion of ourse.

I really got in to Nightwish because of Floor. I did try and discover everything with Tarja although I do like her voice and that she is a hell of a singer I just couldn't get used to her pronounciacion. Some people don't mind that and I tried really hard to see past that. But that does not take away that she is why Nightwish became such a huge band and that she is one hell of a singer. So it sad to see how some people attack each other because of the "who is better thing". To each their own, and in one way were lucky that we can pick from 3 singers who are all 3 of them really good.

    • @infinitydreamzz
      @infinitydreamzz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

" *the chemistry with music composition and Tarja's voice* " ... Yeap, those old songs were written for Tarja specifically and thus match her vocals perfectly which is why I find other singers loose a few points when performing those old Tarja songs. Just like you I also like the old Nightwish and their songs more, because they are younger, darker, more metallic, more powerful.. as they grew older and mature so did their sound become more relaxed, mature and melodic, still an excellent band but their old stuff are unsurpassed.
Current Floor has range, old Tarja had youthful energy, darkness, power, presence and supreme operatic voice; so it's both a shame that he chose one of her most quiet and melodic songs (Phantom of the opera) to "make the comparison fair" and that Floor's chosen live performance is of "Ghost love score" that is erroneously considered by some people to be the definitive version, when the original studio version is simply better.
It's the old Nightwish for me, and I think my preference has a lot to do with them being both young and wildly talented so I would most likely have chosen the old Nightwish even if no one had left the band and the band members were the exact same people. As another example of this my favourite Maiden are the 80s Maiden

I agree in some areas. The music written while Tarjia was the singer is better than while Floor joined the band. We will have to see what the new stuff sounds like. The last album was their worst though I can and still listen to it as well. It isnt because Floor or Tarjia did them just the music quality.

Dude, you are pulling off a Floor Jansen yourself with that high note at the end here, I`m impressed!. I like all four singers of Nightwish, Let us not forget Marco!!, he supported these ladies like no one could have with his voice. Marco on his own is an amazing singer, and great front man. Tarja is the sound of Nightwish, and will always be their Queen. Anette has her unique style too. Floor is off the hook as vocalist and front woman, Nightwish is lucky to have her.

  • @LojakZeRo
    @LojakZeRo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +75

My opinion this is kinda like the Queen debate. They all brought something to the table. But like Freddie, Tarja is "the sound" of Nightwish. A symphonic metal band with an actual opera singer (yes Ken she is very much trained, her whole early life was Opera, she's basically a national treasure) is almost unheard of. Annette brought that pop sound which has stayed with the band (influence) and then we get to Floor. Floor is the all-rounder. She does the opera elements enough justice and she absolutely dominates the pop and rock elements in ways I hadn't realized this band was capable of until Floor. So while my heart always goes to Tarja first and I prefer the bands sound with her at the helm, I must say Floor is prolly the best overall sound for the band as they are today, she's fantastic and possibly the greatest female rock singer out there right now.
    Great video and series Ken!

That's a nice balanced opinion, which I pretty much agree with. Oddly, I probably appreciate Tarja more now than I did originally. I always loved some Nightwish songs in the past (the whole Wishmaster album is a good example) but some of them I really didn't like, Ghost Love Score being one.... I know that's controversial but I'm not convinced by Tarja singing that song as it just kinda peters out at the end. But, I still prefer Tarja singing things like 'End of all Hope' and 'Slaying the Dreamer'. The bottom line is that Nightwish benefitted from both Floor and Tarja. Then of course, there is Anette, who, to my mind is on two of the best albums in 'Imaginaerum' and 'Dark Passion Play'. Not great live (of course), but actually I love her in 'Slow, love, Slow' and 'Scaretale' and I don't think that either Floor or Tarja could replicate her playfulness.
I just love aspects of all three!

I agree mostly on everything, still I think the reason why Anette didnt sound so good on live its because she had to forced her voice to sing Tarja songs and she wasnt there, she didnt get help to adapt the songs and probably dont have the ability to do so. On the other hand she had a sound that is different that the other two.
For me the three personify the facets of a woman
Tarja is the ethereal kind of angelic side
Anette is the woman, seductive somehow vulnerable, yet with a lot of personality
and Floor is the warrior, a force of nature, powerful yet gentle.

@@doglover7377 It wasn't until the last concert was over that Tarja received the open letter in her dressing room telling her that she was no longer in the band, so whatever they were crying for, it couldn't have been about that as neither Tarja or the fans knew about it at the point the recording was made. The press conference that was held afterwards, on the other hand, was very emotional and Tarja was certainly crying then. There were a lot of things that happened behind the scenes that led up to that moment though and, while it was not a popular outcome, it wasn't an easy decision for them to write the letter and it certainly took it's toll on the rest of the band, particularly Tuomas (and all of this has been very well documented in various places). Had they not wrote the letter when they did, I believe that Tarja had already expressed that her departure from the band was in the pipeline anyway. I absolutely respect anyone's right to have their own favourite amongst the three female vocalists (not four) and have already expressed my own opinion on this. Given that Tarja and Tuomas formed the band together, she was always going to be a hard act to follow but times change and I think that the evolution of the band, whether through necessity, choice or circumstance has cumulated very well and each singer has had a valuable contribution during their different eras. Nightwish, as a whole, benefitted enormously from the skilful compositions throughout of Tuomas and the professional, musical talents of each of the band members and everything combined has made them what they are today.

On the other hand, I really believe Floor, with her versatility, is the key that unlocks the true potential of Tuomas's songwriting abilities. I don't think we've yet seen their magnum opus and with Marco leaving the band there will always be the 'what if's', but nevertheless I'm excited for the future of this band and the stories they will tell!

I think that all three had some great songs with the band that I haven't heard covered any better than their own version. They had different styles which has given Nightwish overall a huge amount of versatility. It has definitely highlighted Tuomas' skill as a composer and songwriter in the different styles that he has been able to incorporate and the bandmembers ability to play them. I agree that it was rather unfortunate to have chosen Anette singing Wishmaster though. I didn't hate it but she was never going to be able to compare with Tarja there. I even prefer Tarja's version to Floor's if I'm honest but Annette's Rest Calm or Turn Loose the Mermaids is amazing!

First, I rarely ever comment on TH-cam. This is the first video I've seen of yours and subscribed immediately (I have maybe 4 subscriptions). I'm compelled to comment because I went to a music major high school where signing and music theory were required. I'm passionate about good vocals and have some training.
I wanted to let you know that you are spot on. I agree nearly 100%. My only small gripe is I think you give Annette more credit than she deserves. I agree, her CDs are probably the best of Nightwish. I never heard her live until this though. That was atrocious. You say she's a "good studio singer", but I think that doesn't say much. Shouldn't most singers sound good with the help of the studio? With what I saw here, she would have never have gotten a solo part in my high school. She's not even a good pop voice.
When I discovered Nightwish in the early 2000s, I really liked the music, but I couldn't completely get into the vocals. Tarja uses what my teachers called a "covered" sound and I think she just used too much of it. I absolutely love operatic vocals, but she just took it a little to far for that style of music.
When I discovered After Forever in the early 2000s, I fell in love with Floor's voice. "Lonely" and "Cry With a Smile" lead me to the conclusion that Floor is the best female metal singer and one of the best singers I've ever heard for any genre. I'm ecstatic that she's finally getting the appreciation that she's always deserved. She's indisputably the best thing to ever happen to Nightwish. With that said, Marko leaving is devastating.

The thing is, I really don't see Annette as having replaced Tarja, Tuomas probably wanted to take Nightwish in a different direction and was limited by Tarja's style, so when he got the chance he changed the style of the band completely. But I really feel Floor is the best of both worlds and has a better stage presence and chemistry, plus an ability to distort her voice to give her a harder rock feeling, which the other couldn't, or at least didn't.

You know, I don't even think she was a poor replacement for Tarja. I think that if Tuomas had just had Anette sing *her* songs for Live performances, it would've been fine. But he wanted to perform Tarja's songs still, and that wasn't fair to Anette. Bye Bye Beautiful also wasn't fair to Anette, or to make a music video of her singing it in; they might as well have put a neon sign over her head for fans to take their anger out on. And if they'd released The Escapist (instead of Amaranth) as their first hit single with Anette, she would've been welcomed by fans much more graciously. A much more solid song. Multiple mistakes on Tuomas's (and the rest of Nightwish) fault.

I think it's great that everyone can choose a favourite song of NW with one's favourite singer in it! Kind of a luxury problem 😉

All are great, Floor is my favourite... but still the 2 best Nightwish albums are the ones with Anette on vocals.

I love Tarja but Floor is a goddess! She gives me goosebumps whenever I hear her incredible voice! And her stage presence is absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you so much, Ken, for this video!! I really love Tarja and she'll remain my favorite forever. However, I think you're right as far as Floor having the whole package and she sounds amazing! I also agree on the Anette albums being the coolest! Tuomas must have been in a serious funk for the first part of Nightwish. The music is so beautiful but oh, so sad and lonely.
I'm an American who has never been anywhere near their concerts but even from my limited experience, we catch him having more fun in pictures now with his look and even cracking a smile sometimes. I think in the beginning, it might be that what they were doing was pioneering enough that he really wanted them to be taken seriously. Now that they're established and he's proven that he can write beautiful music to support really any lead voice type at this point, I can tell he's pretty proud of himself, as he should be! I get mad at him sometimes for how he handled that past stuff but I also love him. He's amazing and I admire him very much. He's pretty much just made it clear that at the end of the day, the band comes first. I am doing a TarTuo fanart to sort of help me accept their part of it, and I was looking for album cover refs yesterday. Their early album promo shoots are so weird. XDDD Especially the white ones where they brought Tarja clear up into our faces and set the other guys far in the back, or where she and Tuomas were brought forward and Marco, Jukka and Emppu were little ants. Weird. I just hope that sort of marketing didn't happen all the time back then or I can def see how even this could help promote a rift. While I'm clearly Tarja-biased, I love them all and I don't think marketing is something we can put solely on her as being a diva. It's a misogynistic lens that helped trap her in a diva box because marketing is like a reality show where it's all framed to make people look epically amazing or bad. If I had been Jukka for example, I can only imagine I would constantly not care to do photoshoots or I would have to just accept the shallow "reality" that no one cares about the drummer, only the songbird and the composer, which simply isn't true. With NW filmed on stage, no one fades into the background if they're a featured member. You see how great they all are at what they do (edit: AND how much fun they have and had together.) I'm glad that it seems like the group is all pictured on the same plane now with Floor to promote them all as equally important because the music would only be a shadow of itself without every single one of the bandmate's talents.
I think I might have an idea about Tarja's dramatic enunciation. For me, with her pure rounded vowels and maybe my language barrier, it was difficult to understand the lyrics at times in live concert footage without looking them up, but I totally understood every word of Phantom so she may have picked up the enunciation to compensate.
I really hope that Anette footage was just an off day. You're right about her look, Ken. I remember Tarja mentioning that on the End of Innocence documentary that this was a specific requirement by the menfolk (of the band maybe but probably more of the industry,) that her looks were a big deal and she needed to be made up. I love being comfortable and can barely be bothered, so I totally empathize but then when I see this Anette footage, I am starting to see why, at least as far as showmanship. Having our bandmembers decked out like vamps and rockstars up there takes us away to the fairytale so it's almost like you don't even notice past Anette's outfit to hear her singing. Then there's that whole sexual but yet unattainable songbird thing going on too that's part of the marketing. At the same time, I also appreciate that she didn't let that sort of looks pressure get to her and was liberating herself. Double-edged sword for me but ultimately, I love their costumes and lightshows so I am going to just be a bit of a hypocrite prefer how Tarja and Floor dress.
I need to find a good Floor album song that captures me the way that Anette and Tarja have, to start listening to the new stuff. Watching the video where Tarja and Floor sing together, where it's clear they like each other very much, really helped for me to accept Floor. From what I've heard of Nightwish's music overall so far, the ladies all inspire different moods for me. Tarja with the boys is like the very essence of passion and gives me the good chills, especially when paired with Marco. Anette is childlike, playful and sweet like a visit to fairy land and always makes me smile, especially Storytime, which is the song I'm currently obsessed with and prolly my fave NW song overall besides Planet Hell and GLS. Floor is more ethereal and reminds me of the Tolkien elves, at least for the slow stuff I've heard. I like the way all of it sounds!

Speaking of End of Innocence, did anyone notice how they showed us so much of how Tuomas was drunk and tortured all through that tour, even framing it with sad music? Tarja didn't look to be together with them much during all that, which doesn't look great on the surface for their closeness, but in truth, a single female alone with one drunk male or more, would be very dangerous for her. Even if they weren't drunk and gropey with her, they are all very hawt and would probably be hard to resist. I could only see her coming out of it quite pregnant. So I'm glad she stayed safe.

My favorite is Tarja cause she has some kind of an special connection or chemistry with the audience and with the band members, specially in songs like Everdream, Walking in the Air, Wish I had an angel, Nemo, Siren, Over the Hills and far away, Bless the Child, Ghost Score and of course Phanthom of the Opera. Just analyze Walking in the Air and you could notice how people feel like that, as if you were somekind of floating in the air. Definitely, Tarja.

Started listening to Nightwish from their Once album but I saw Nightwish first on their Dark Passion Play tour in 2008 and it was amazing.
It was everything I imagined and more the energy of the band on stage was out of this world. It was a small theatre very intimate and the sound was amazing. On subsequent tours they've played in larger venues. Watching them live I was in awe, Dark Passion Play's album really stood up to it's live performance.
I missed their next tour and then was really happy to see their 2016 tour with Floor. It was an absolutely great concert.
Annette gets overlooked a lot but you can't deny the quality of her albums. Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum stand toward the top.
    Floor is my favourite singer.

Wow, this is great ... thanks Ken for the most balanced assessment I have ever heard of these 3 women. Tarja is my least favourite but honestly probaby because she's the one I know the least.
Anette did sing on the best two albums Nightwish ever produced and she killed it in the studio. The official videos of "Amaranth" and "Storytime" done with Anette are incredible like short films.
Of the two albums Floor recorded "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" is the better one. With "The Greatest Show on Earth" Tuomas's opus of the story of all life in 24 minutes. At the end of the day, you're right Floor combines the sensibilities of both Tarja and Anette while bringing an incredible skill set of her own to the stage. Then being such a Rock Star while doing so, Floor is the greater of the 3 women. This was fantastic and you're so good with this series, love it.

Being able to bring a little bit of the other two women in each doesn’t mean that she’s greater. A jack of all trades doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s the best artist. You could be somebody who specializes in one thing and blow everyone else away. That being said, you have every right to prefer floor, I just thought that I would comment on that point. A lot of people don’t understand that TARJA is also very versatile and doesn’t just sing in a classical style.

Great takedown Mr. Tamplin! I like all 3 of them. But Anette did a fabulous job on "Amaranth". What a fantastic chorus! The last one when they raise the frequency a bit is just incredible. I cannot go to sleep now! Staying on youtube.

Tarja laid the foundation of the soprano led symphonic metal and then Anette filled in with the pop elements but the brilliance of adding Floor is that not only can she handle the back catalogue of both Tarja and Anette, on top of that Floor is also a full-fledged metal singer which means she is a more perfect fit for Nightwish than almost anyone else could have been.

I favor Floor, she is Dutch like me, but that's not the reason, although we see her do so much more than just Nightwish. She always shines. She also is a vocal coach and shows her own footage as well as giving examples and doing covers. She is a tall lady too which adds to her stage presence. Although I have seen Tarja and Floor sing together they match. But overall Floor is the best.

Thanks so much for the video ! As you said Nightwish might be one of the most under rated band ever. Their songwirting, playing, performing and even live mixing are impecable, really outstanding. They way the mixed the melody symphonic emotions with the rock energy and vibe is really unique. All respect to both Tarja and Anette, but Floor might be one of the most skilled and talented female rock singer of all times. Incredible range, unique mix of chest and head voice, vocal and stage presence, super technique.... In my opinion Floor took Nightwith outstanding work to an even superior level. Floor + nightwish songwriting, production and performance created a killer... huge band! If still don´t know Nightwish go for it and prepare for amazing surprise.

I had tried Nightwish a few years back and didn't get them. The Phantom thing was cute, so I shared it on my Facebook music page for my daughter who does musical theatre. Your breakdown is how I felt about both the singers not named Floor. I am a Floorwish fan and listen to no one else now.
I love your maleness in your reactions and have you up there with 3 other vocal experts. I am a drummer, closet bass player, born again guitarist and 1 fingered typist keyboard player who also writes, records and releases his own music. I have 2 singers I use and have been able to communicate with the right language that you use, what I hear in my lyrics and melodies. Now onto Hughes, Gillan and Coverdale, peace brother!
