Giant Calving at Helheim Glacier 2022

- This was taken at Helhiem Glaicer near Tasiilaq, Greenland. I was there for a research mission unrelated to capturing video. While we were completing a mission objective the calving started so I quickly threw my drone up and captured this video. Unfortunately the drone has no microphone as all you would hear is propeller noise but the noise coming from this even was incredible to say the least.
The wall itself was between 60-80 meters tall which makes the largest piece breaking off around 500-1000 meters wide.

That was absolutely astonishing to watch - I've watched hours of glacier calving videos on TH-cam and I'd hold this up to be the best I've ever seen! Its epic and awe-inspiring to see the living earth like this; we live in a constantly changing landscape and you've really brought it to life with your outstanding drone footage! Scientists just 10 years ago could only dream of getting this close to a calving glacier, yet here we are in glorious 4K with front-row seats to see every detail of this incredible process. Thanx so much for sharing!!

Even silent, the best calving video yet for picture sharpness and panning kept at a minimum allowing the viewer to focus where interesting events were happening from start to finish. This sort of footage is truly the hallmark of drone technology at its best application.
The guy who filmed this should get an award. This is absolutely amazing!

This is an amazing video and while it is gorgeous and beautiful to watch, and must be amazing to witness live, I wish it were something that isn't related to what is happening with the planet and climate change. Anyway, have you shared this with any media outlet? I cannot believe that I didn't see this prior to today as I can only imagine them showing this all day. Especially since the last climate meeting in Bonn in late June wrapped up and from what I can tell, the global inaction is a big problem. It is not a future issue as it is here already and will just get worse each year.
Anyway, thanks for posting this. I can only imagine what it sounded like. Ironically, I just heard the sounds from the solar winds that was posted recently also from the Parker Solar Probe. Creepy.
I am curious if the University that you reference is Penn State. It popped into my mind because I see a lot of media coverage related to climate has a lot of their guests from PSU. Thanks again. David
@@davidargiro8306 Thank you for the kind words! It is absolutely devastating knowing that this is due to climate change but still such a surreal experience. I am working on getting it to news outlets but it has proved rather tricky. The University I work for is The University of Kansas (KU)

Spectacular and the 2nd greatest filmed mega calving I have ever seen. Just mind blowing the size, EPIC footage. National Geographic or someone would pay for this footage.
National geographic is irrelevant now that we have social media and affordable drones

drone pilot, glaciologist to sit there for days or months until this type of thing occurs. That's
just the start for an entity like National Geographic because you then need someone to
speak or write about the event etc.

I've been waiting to see drone footage of something like this! This is so awesome! Nature is a marvel.
How does this video not have MILLIONS of views? This is stuff that 0.1% of the worlds population will ever see. Absolutely floored to see this from a birds eye view. Very close to the video of the glacier the size of Manhattan calving.

That must have been epic. While working as a biologist in Alaska in the 90s, our helicopter pilot dropped me and a coworker off on a little perch on the rock face overlooking a local glacier and left us there for a couple hours with a bottle of wine. There was no other access so we were just sitting on this exposed smooth rock. We got to see some great calving action and the sound was indeed incredible. But the wind coming up the face of that rock was so cold we were glad when he came back to pick us up. 🥶🥶 Thanks for sharing!

The scale of a calving event is staggering. When you say the wall is 60-80 meters tall, that's just the small bit exposed. Then you see them thrust out of the water and realize there is 600-800 meters under water you don't see. Amazing job capturing this.

There is a 360° view at around 4:00 into the video, which shows that the calving is pretty far from the sea shore.

I am very fortunate to have witnessed a major avalanche 30 years ago. after all that time, what a saw is now a bit hazy, But I can remember that sound as if it were yesterday. This must have been even more amazing

Trying to find or keep an eye on it is so difficult because there’s some much happening in this scene. Ice and snow and whatever else is moving in every which way direction. But it’s awe inspiring. Great video of it.

Phenomenal coverage! Reminiscent of plate tectonics and what world happen at the Mid-Oceanic Ridge, except instead of lava, it's ice!
This IS and will probably be the Largest calving on Air. Yes there are some but the Totality of these, are astounding.

Pitty there's no sound...
It took me a few minutes to realize that the chasm the drone was flying in was actually water at the bottom. Seeing the massive chunks flip on their side gives you a real sense of the depth of the glacier itself. You see what looks like 10-20 (despite being 60-80) meters of it sticking out of the water before calving then the the calved piece rolls up on it's side.
This is going to be amazingly incredible when it turns into a river. Can't wait.
I find it so awe-inspiring that this kind of stuff is going on whether someone is watching or not, on a bright clear day as well as in the middle of the night under cover of darkness...
The engagement with the audience makes it feel like a community.

Incredible video!!! It made me think of the movies, "San Andreas" for the scale and, for some reason, "Inception."(I guess because the last piece of glacier was square or rectangular and it rolled.) San Andreas was totally unrealistic from what I understand, so to see something like this in nature this was fantastical. Drones bring us things I could never see without them - or you! Just amazing.

This is the best glacier footage I've ever seen. How did you know to be there when this happened. Its amazing how every movement disrupted more and more of the glacier. I can't tell you enough how interesting this video is. Thrilling.
Unfortunately this is a quiet day. Around the peak tides the Geothermally driven outbursts from the head of the Greenland Volcanic Megaplume are blasting steam and Megafloods down the Fiord, and the whole shebang is moving at over 20km per day, 100+ km a day out the coastal exit. You couldn't get a ship or plane or drone near on those days. There's hundred km per hour + blasts of mist and entrained air streaming out to sea from 50 to 100km inland. You can see the Ash on the surface in the Video, and the surface of the Icesheet in a big Arc inland on Google Earth. You have to zoom in for the high Res tiles.

I was out there for a research mission and it just started to happen. I scrambled my drone as fast as I could to get video so it really was just a case of right place at the right time

This is great footage.
To improve the cinematic quality, use the 'ease' features in your drone controller so that tilt and pan operations ease in and out of motion rather than just jumping in. It will make it easier to see on future videos.

I have watched many of these videos before, But this one was exceptional.. The photographer was professional, They absolutely knew what they were doing, And it turned out to be one of the most spectacular calving events ever caught on film I'm sure! Incredibly well done !!!

3:52 into the video and then again a little bit further at 4:07 - 4:10 you can see a very large dark boulder that seems to have all kinds of colors of minerals inside it. I love the clarity of this video! If only there was a way to passively collect these glacier calving deposits and put them towards good use without disrupting the glaciers further. To be honest, the worlds receding glaciers could potentially provide a large portion of the funding and raw materials needed to ultimately save them.

I see that there are also Midgard and Fenris glaciers near by to Helheim glacier. All Norwegian and norse mythology names. I wonder by whom and when this names were given ? Are they related to Fridtjof Nansen, the Norwegian polar explorer, who crossed the "Inlandsis" near here in the late 1800s ?

so far away, relaxed, in a warm building, during the cold winter. But I'm only
left thinking, if only 'all' the drones made could only have cameras, and people

@@steveblixt9437 Just part of the LIFE of a glacier. Advance, retreat, advance, retreat. Yes, sometimes they die, and later others are born.
The climate is not changing in ANY manner that has caused this normal, calving.
Don’t worry, I’ve got a recycling bin. Also, I only use paper straws so, I pretty much got this covered. Yeah, nature!

Thanks to drones and small HD cameras and even mobile phone cameras we can now show what has been happening for hundreds of millions of years everywhere across the globe, of course much less in the tropics than within the polar circles.
This blows my mind! Where is this glacier? Is this a true calving? It looks more like a giant sink hole happens in the center of a glacier! This reminds me of the truly great video of that gigantic “calving” that was equal to the size of Manhattan. They both look surreal. I wish that, like the “manhattan” sized one, the perspective in the size of this one could also be demonstrated somehow. Fantastic drone work! Thank you!
This is Helheim Glacier on the east coast of Greenland near Tasiilaq. To put some perspective the height of the "wall" was about 60-70 meters tall so these pieces are between half a kilometer to a kilometer wide!
