I hear he did do a pilot for a talk show but it wasn't picked up. Essentially I think he got typecasted as a game show host and in the mid 90s game shows weren't "hip" anymore. @@ajk He came from my hometown of Hamilton, Ohio. I am news director for the radio station in town, and he always came back for charity work, or to run his comedy club in Cincinnati. I interviewed him on several occasions.
@@stevevaughn5365 Interesting and cool. How much interaction did you have with him in his last 2 years post Feud? Curious how you woulda saw him change/or not in that time.
@@ajk The last few years were mostly phone conversations. I remember in the fall of 1994. This had to have been after his wreck. Hamilton High School beat Princeton, a HUGE upset in local high school football. I believe he had a son on the team, if I'm not mistaken. He called the station to listen to the entire game on hold over the phone from California. When they picked up after the game, he was in tears. That game was a huge deal to the locals. Early on, when he first became Family Feud host, he was actually at the station, and called my wife and wished her a happy birthday at work. He did a local Family Feud fundraiser featuring officials from the cities of Hamilton and Fairfield. He also built a youth baseball field. He was very active in his hometown.
@@stevevaughn5365 He sounded like a really good guy, shame how things ended up for him. Had to be rough on you and others who knew him in the area when he killed himself. Can you clarify something for me incidentally? Bobby Heenan (RIP to him too), famed wrestler, manager and commentator from the 60's through the early 2000's wrote about Ray and his experiences being on Family Feud with him in the early 90's in his first book, stating that Ray felt demeaned doing a game show, but having as many kids as he had he had to support them somehow, so he did what he had to. Knowing him as well as you clearly did, would you say what Bobby said was true? How did Ray feel/like doing Feud from your perspective? Did he like it? Or did he really want more than that for himself ultimately?
I know. I used to like it when a real tall contestant was on and he stood on chairs and the like. He also got picked up fairly often by a winning family lol.
Tomorrow, on June 2, marks the 25 year anniversary of the day Ray Combs died. He was a great host when I used to watch him on Family Feud back in the day. He'll be sorely missed.
Shocking, but Ray was born the exact same day my mom was born, to the year, and she is also ambitious towards success, though not to the extent Ray was. He was a GREAT host and shouldn't have been fired (he would have been a great host for Jeopardy or Wheel or even Price Is Right after the original hosts' retirements or deaths). Ray as Feud host today would be as good, if not better, than Steve Harvey. RIP.
A lot of eery lines Ray dropped here, "I thought I was a loser til you walked up here", "a damn fine way to go out". You can see he's doing his best to keep it together and get through the show, true professional. So sad, RIP Ray.
You act like this guy killed himself 10 minutes after they taped this show. He didn't commit suicide until two YEARS later. You're reading way too much into something that simply is NOT there.
@@Igaveyoumyfakename You're right that it wasn't until two years after this that he took his own life. But it's not too far fetched to have thought that there could have been "signs" at this time. This really resonates with me. I was fired from a good job for ridiculous reasons. Wasn’t even allowed to go back and retrieve my things. It sent me into a deep depression. I pray I don’t suffer the same fate as this poor man.
same thing happened to me 6 years ago. With the perspective of time the best advice I can offer is to think of your life as a book that you're writing. Someone closed that chapter on you, but you still have the power to turn the page and write new chapters. When Ray gave up he allowed his story to be written by others. Don't give them the power to occupy your thoughts. Looking back, the best revenge I got was never having to see them or speak to them again. That gives me the power to keep that chapter closed, on my terms. It's your life and your story -- write it how you want it written.
Ray tried so hard to keep his emotions & humor in check in terms of keeping it normal, especially during Fast Money & the outro. You could tell something wasn't right, but us the audience didn't know what at the time... We all do now, & we're all sad for knowing the truth & how the rest of the story went... 💔
Notice he wasn't with the family at the end,...plus something he said during one of the Fast Money answers (2nd family) member that makes me wonder: other than the obvious (the suicide), was this episode his last because he quit or was fired?
@@LVSignChick _Family Feud_ was at a low point along with pretty much every game show of the early 1990's. After Mark Goodson's death in 1992, his son Johnathan took over & tried a bunch of things to revitalize the show. Most of them proved horrendous & the absolute worst one was ditching Ray for former host Richard Dawson. So Ray was ditched (fired) essentially for no reason & he was upset about it. Johnathan Goodson has since admitted that ditching Ray for Richard was his biggest mistake, especially now knowing how Ray's story continued from there until the very end...
@@LVSignChick Ray knew this one would be his last, and he had known for a while he wasn't coming back. On the next to last episode, as the Bullseye game lowered down, he comments "I wish that thing would fall on me right now." Interesting foreshadowing.

I feel so bad for Ray Combs. He was a great host and was my favorite one, but CBS decided he wasn’t going to be the host anymore so they could bring back Dawson, which didn’t improve ratings. The host wasn’t the problem. The show just wasn’t popular anymore because Wheel of Fortune premiered. The show was tired and needed a facelift, not a new host. Sadly, he was in a terrible car accident that affected him for the remainder of his life and caused massive depression which led to him divorcing his wife and later took his own life. I still remember the article about him in People Magazine where it showed his ex wife holding their son looking broken.
Exactly. As you said, the problem here was the format. What they should never have done was introduce the bullseye round. After that the show was never the same.
It wasn't CBS who decided that Combs needed to stop hosting the late 80s era Family Feud, it was the producers at Mark Goodson Productions on behalf of distributor All American Television (who would later acquire MGP from Mark's son Jonathan) who was threatening to stop distributing Feud unless if changes were made because of low viewership at the time. And the CBS (daytime) version was cancelled a year prior to Combs termination.
@@nathanrichards7930Jonathan Goodson wanted Richard Dawson as host again even though his father Mark Goodson volved never to work with Richard Dawson again.
Mark Goodson loved Ray Combs, but the son Jonathon wanted Richard Dawson and to me Richard didn’t have that drive he once had because he made a promise to his daughter that he wouldn’t kiss woman on the show no more because he got married plus when Dawson came back the family contestants was reduced from 5 to 4 players from each family.
So sad. In 1994, or 1995, Ray was in a car crash. Fast forward to 1996, he was sent to a psychiatric hospital after an unwanted tantrum at home as he felt betrayed and in debt. He died overnight on June 2, and the coroner told his wife as she was about finished with the laundry to go to a Mormon church with their kids that her husband died by hanging.
Man Ray Combs was funny and awesome, I remember back in 1996 I hear on the radio Ray’s passing it saddens me to hear about that. May he continue to Rest In Peace 🙏
I graduated about 3 months before the premiere of the current version of the show, which initially saw Louie Anderson as host in 1999. I wasn’t able to watch the premiere as I was having an absolutely miserable time in the U.S. Army, having failed basic training and just waiting for my paperwork to be processed and be sent back home. The detachment company I was in was pretty lax, but they only allowed use of the television in the rec room if you were on night watch duty. I remember some guy getting a PS and a copy of FF VIII. Not to go on too much of a tangent, but I’ve never cared for the _Final Fantasy_ series. I myself with my last or one of my last purchases at the PX while in the army was a CD player and a copy of the new TLC album, FanMail.
I didnt know he hung himself with bed sheets in a psychiatric ward while on suicide watch until right now. How could that happen? They would never leave a patient with noose material these days in their room. They were so neglectful in this case. I hope his family sued the pants off the hospital.
If Mark Goodson Jr would have been smart, when his Dad passed away, and he inherited his Dad’s production company,he would have sold the rights of the show to FOX instead of picking on Ray Combs and making his life miserable!!
Family Feud's Ratings were already goin' Rock Bottom after CBS cancelled the Daytime Version The syndicated version stayed on during the 93/94 Season, but Daytime Talk Shows were takin' over during the time including Oprah and Ricki Lake (who was in her 1st season during that time) and also, the BULLSEYE game was a bad decision and it took away from the traditional Family Feud and most of all, Feud was losing stations during that time
In an October 1996 issue of People Magazine is an article about Ray Combs’s family and the deep debts he left behind. A stand-up comedian who knew Ray said he didn’t manage his money, that he wrote a lot of checks to people in his hometown of Hamilton, Ohio. He funded two comedy clubs in that town, which may not be large enough to support one. In short, Ray spent money as fast as he made it. So when he was kicked to the curb from Family Feud, he had no safety net. Sure, he had a wife and six kids, but if he had managed his money, he could have held on until he found more work. I also think Ray should have found someone to help him deal with the ruthlessness of the entertainment business.
Hard to picture him, banging his head against the walls and destroying all his furniture 😢 I’m really really sorry he had so many problems and felt he couldn’t overcome them.
I remember this episode well because I wasn't in school and home sick. Ray was always sarcastic and as far as that went the show was normal. The reason Ray "left the show and didn't talk to no one" was they staged it where Ray rode (I believe in a Camaro) off the studio lot after the credits finished. While Ray wasn't happy with the show being cancelled I heard that after he left the stage they cut and he went back out and said bye to everyone in the studio. It was like every other taping except where he rides off and wish that CBS original episode was on YT.
This was the one where Ray Combs walked off the set and just drove home without letting them know and I can't blame him. Rest in peace Ray Combs you were definitely going through a lot. Losing your job can't find any work eventually fighting with and losing your wife that would be too much for a lot of men to bear. I am holding up but only because I have grandkids.

Ray Combs last Family Feud ended the same year (1994) when Arsenio Hall ended his late night show and WGN ended its Illinois Lottery game show $100,000 Fortune Hunt and replaced it with Illinois Instant Riches. At the time this last episode of Ray Combs Family Feud aired a lot of TV stations dropped Family Feud by then (like Charlotte NC) or placed it in the wee hours of the morning. My CBS affiliate WSPA channel 7 moved it to 1:35 am (Combs last season) until they dropped it and ABC affiliate WLOS channel 13 picked up Richard Dawson's return of the Feud that year.

@@jaketanner7496 He was fired for not being Richard Dawson, that's not exactly something he can help. Iy would have been okay, if someone would have helped him get other work, and transition to that job, instead of not have anywhere to go. You need to really take someone's mental health in the account when talking about these things.
Besides the ratings, there was also the death of Mark Goodson as well. Goodson remembered the issues he had with Dawson in the final years of the ABC/First Syndication run, and as such, went with Combs as host. After Mark's death, his son, Jonathan took over Mark Goodson Productions and that's when he was able to coax Richard Dawson out of semi-retirement and take back the hosting reins. All of the subsequent hosts were picked by those hired by Freemantle and it's predecessors that bought out Mark Goodson Productions.

For instance, they didn't take the last answer of the first money player when he said it at the buzzard, even though Ray stuttered through one of the questions. Then, they didn't accept truck but car was the number 1 answer. Normally they'd be counted the same.
If Ray had only been able to hold on, maybe they would’ve asked him to do the 99 revival. He had major emotional issues at the time though (depression among others I think) brought about partially by the announcement in 1993 that he would be fired in 1994 in favor of bringing back original host Richard Dawson, and I read he didn't even say goodbye to any of the crew or anything, just walked out, suffered more emotional issues later on (and a car accident in July(?)) and then committed suicide by hanging in June(?) 1996 and had attempted suicide multiple times beforehand, banging his head against walls hard enough to draw blood and destroying furniture in his own home
@@GameShowFan9001 let's just say that his financial situation was so dire that Johnny Carson, who helped give Ray Combs his big break on TV as a guest on "The Tonight Show", helped pay for his funeral.

It probably was very humiliating to have to find a job, and everybody knows who he is. I really feel for the guy. I just hope he’s in a better place today.😢 but I’ll say this he was fun to watch on family feud back then!
Did Combs have just the two comedy clubs in Cincy, or more elsewhere? For people slamming on his ex-wife, its worth remembering that near the end, Combs' behavior became erratic, worrisome even in the home. Banging one's head bloody against a wall is not far removed from lashing out physically against others. Milder expressions of this behavior may have happened in their marriage before they separated. When children are involved, their safety has to be the priority, no matter how much one loves their spouse. For people who have been committed to a hospital in his situation, shouldn't it be basic safety not to have a clothes bar in the closet?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t I hear a story while he was hosting Family Feud, Ray would be in his dressing room and he constantly hit his head on the wall or something?
@@alexwells9948 Incorrect. It was because Mark Goodson Productions unfairly fired him and replaced him with Richard Dawson, and his life was already going to shit.

Yes, sadly, this Friday, May 27, 1994 was last day of late Mr. Raymond "Ray" N. Combs Jr. as "Family Feud" host though for now, with its new host(only shortly) being again the late Mr. Richard Dawson, still, apparently, late Mr. Eugene "Gene" E. Wood was its studio announcer! Still so sad. I remember watching the Combs episodes of Family Feud on CBS during the Summer. He was good, but he just lacked the charm and the suave demeanor of Richard Dawson. He was a little too "stand-up comedian" for me. Then again, Steve Harvey has taken that and pumped it up by 10 to big ratings, but back in the mid 90s, game shows were a dying genre unless you were Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy or The Price is Right. It didn't matter who hosted the show, it was getting cancelled. But to hear that after this, he got in a bad car accident, separated from his wife and was dealing with financial woos... it's all so sad. RIP Ray Combs.
Two things about the fast money round. If "car" was the number one answer for the fifth question, I'm a bit surprised that "truck" wasn't used interchangeably (i.e. I felt that they should have been given the points). Secondly, the producers or whomever is in charge of the you've-duplicated-the-answer buzzer screwed up when the second contestant said "husband" - if that netted zero points then it clearly was being used interchangeably with "boyfriend." That being said, the second fast money player unfortunately seemed so unprepared that even if he was asked to give another answer for the fourth question, it likely wouldn't have made a difference. And yeah, RIP Ray Combs. As great as Richard Dawson was, Ray Combs will always always always be my favourite Family Feud host.
Honestly, I see it as the only way he knew he could hold it together. I’ve seen folks say it’s unprofessional but he likely had to and couldn’t hold his composure any lounger.
The producers wanted to boost the ratings so to that they brought back Dawson. The ratings were even worse than before and the show went off the air until 1999 when the modern version was born
I would’ve thought that would’ve been some personal gratification for Ray. If he had only been able to homd on maybe he would’ve been brought back for the 99 revival

There are so many worse people out there... being terrible with money and getting divorced is ANYTHING but a sin (I'm not religious though). In LA, it was cool having Family Feud at 9-10 AM then Price Is Right, meaning we got Combs and Barker back to back, even during 93-94, when KCBS got the syndicated version from KCAL 9 (I remember all this because my grandma was into game shows, so we'd watch Family Feud and Price Is Right, then the USA Network game show block, then Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune from 7-8 PM... this was when I was REALLY little, though I still remembered stuff from back when I was three years old such as Chain Reaction, Wipeout, and High Rollers being on USA, as they all left before 1992, though I only remember Face The Music and Name That Tune from The Family Channel rather than USA).

Since then, his career declined significantly, and it all came crashing down as if the moon fell from the sky within the three-day span. Two years after his last straw with Family Feud, Combs died after hanging himself in the psych ward of a Glendale hospital. He was aged 40.
You could tell Ray was really bitter about being replaced by the same man who had preceded him as host, Richard Dawson

screw the pandemic and screw china. ruined the world
I was a kid (early 80s baby) when Ray Combs hosted Family Feud, and when he did Family Challenge on the Family Channel later on but haven't paid him attention since. When I got in my early 20s I decided to look Ray up to see what he was up to, but I was crushed when I learned years too late that he was gone. I can only imagine what life would've been if Ray was still here. R.I.P.
He still kept his self-deprecating humor. He told me after his final show "they didn't even offer me a Tetley Tea Bag as a departing gift! 🤣"
How did you know Ray?
My favorite host ever. Dude was super charismatic and fun to watch.
I know. I used to like it when a real tall contestant was on and he stood on chairs and the like. He also got picked up fairly often by a winning family lol.

In the second to last episode he said "Oh how I wish [the bullseye game] would land on me now!" when it came down from the ceiling.
Regardless, RIP to him. It was a pleasure watching him.
@Alex Kanyima More like a slap in the testicles.
an absolute pro as he always was.

Thought I was a loser until you walked up here, you made me feel like a man!"

@@eric21200 I agree
It wasn't CBS who decided that Combs needed to stop hosting the late 80s era Family Feud, it was the producers at Mark Goodson Productions on behalf of distributor All American Television (who would later acquire MGP from Mark's son Jonathan) who was threatening to stop distributing Feud unless if changes were made because of low viewership at the time. And the CBS (daytime) version was cancelled a year prior to Combs termination.

So sad. In 1994, or 1995, Ray was in a car crash. Fast forward to 1996, he was sent to a psychiatric hospital after an unwanted tantrum at home as he felt betrayed and in debt. Family Feud's Ratings were already goin' Rock Bottom after CBS cancelled the Daytime Version
The syndicated version stayed on during the 93/94 Season, but Daytime Talk Shows were takin' over during the time including Oprah and Ricki Lake (who was in her 1st season during that time) and also, the BULLSEYE game was a bad decision and it took away from the traditional Family Feud and most of all, Feud was losing stations during that time
In my hometown Family Feud was on WKYT but it's not on the air anymore.
Charlotte NC already dropped Family Feud when this was aired so they missed out on this episode.
His name is Christ Jesus.
The comment to the guy after he got no points in fast money is haunting.

The way he was talking he sure Was upset and the way he look at the camera

Besides the ratings, there was also the death of Mark Goodson as well. Goodson remembered the issues he had with Dawson in the final years of the ABC/First Syndication run, and as such, went with Combs as host. Then, they didn't accept truck but car was the number 1 answer. Normally they'd be counted the same.
If Ray had only been able to hold on, maybe they would’ve asked him to do the 99 revival. I know getting fired hurt him, but I would’ve thought he had some gratification when the bringing back of Richard Dawson bombed big time. Since he was a stand-up comedy before I’m surprised he didn’t try to use his name recognition to start up successful tour. He probably could’ve gotten a regular spot in Branson, Missouri, which was starting to kick off around this time.

Ray was a bit of a dick to the Tran guy art the end. You could see he was very bitter
