- A look at Hornady's new FP design on their XTP Bullets. This bullet is desiged for long barrel revolver and rifles, so check out what happens with short barrel revolvers!!
Which bullet is best for running in as revolver and carbine rifle combo?? 1 of several bullets that I'll be doing similar testing with over the next several weeks.
A look at velocity, expansion, weight retention and penetration in the Clear Ballistics 10% ballistic gel block with 5 different barrel lengths!
Spreadsheet with data and pics near the end of the video!

Yup, we've come full circle. Bullet companies marketing the need for hollow point, expansion, energy dump, yada, yada. This isn't meant for a personal defense scenario.
This is a tough hunting bullet and emulates the Keith style bullet, but does have some bonus expansion. I'm giving it an A+.
@@yukon4545 Very true. There are enough consumers out there these days to justify making a greater selection of bullets with narrower uses. 👍🏻
Finally a gel test of the FP
I’ve been looking for one for years.
Thank you so much.
Looks like a great deer hunting bullet for Carbines.
My Marlin is happy
Out of long barrels, I like the 180 XTP-HP.
I've been using this bullet for about 3 years for whitetails out of a Smith & Wesson 686 with a 7 inch barrel and it is a very effective hunting bullet. Thanks for reviewing it.
this has got to be the best testing og bullets I have watched.FINE JOB
@@bendetwiler7719 Thank you!!
glad to come across you working on this. I am currently working with the same two bullets to make hunting load for this year.
Your 357 series is my absolute favorite gel testing series. Would be interesting to do similar series in other calibers.
Looks like this load would be an excellent hunting load for rifles or Ruger single action revolvers. Even in the 5" revolver you got good wound channel which reaches deeper with excellent final penetration.
@@mkshffr4936 I have a series up for .300blk and half way through a series of 8.6blk.
I hope to do .38spl, .44mag and .44spl later this fall as well. All with the multiple barrel length format. I’m intrigued by the deference the inches of barrel makes and seems like it’s a pretty popular format so far.
Thank you very much for responding to your subscriber’s requests! You’re a class act. This certainly answered my questions; this bullet will not do it all, but I’m going to give it a go on deer/hogs in my rifle/6” combo that I’ll be carrying on the hunt this year. Will need to pick up something else for my 2.5 and 4. The standard XTP would probably do fine, but you don’t always get perfect broadside shots, and that extra penetration might come in handy.
@@tombraley3212 your welcome! It’s easy to fill requests when I already have the bullets! 😉😂
I've been loading this bullet for carrying in the woods for extra penetration. Using it in a 4" barrel looks pretty iffy for expansion, but it will get the penetration.
@@craigbenz4835 Good point. There’s a sweet spot between expansion and penetration. Barrel length and bullet weight both play into it. Hopefully the data from all these tests will help pick the best barrel/bullet weight combinations. 😉👍🏻
I probably still have over 1000 reloads with 158 hardcast. They're going to outlive me it seems. :) Thanks for the tests.
@@Bob.W. 😂😂
Yup, like others have said....that is looking to be one heck of a whitetail getter! I'm hoping when you get done with this series you can give a summery of which bullet you think would be the best for a revolver and carbine....for self defense and deer hunting. Another great video, thank you for what you are doing here!
@@MikeJacobs-c4l that’s the plan. I have a few more to run though. 😉
@@kentuckyrangetime
That's awesome! Thank you!
Very interesting. I can definitely see a place for this in the XTP lineup. Especially when one wants the deeper penetration when shot at rifle velocities. I have been using the Rem. 158 flat point with the scalloped half jacket for this but think I will give the Hornady a try.
@@drewpackman2929 👍🏻👊🏻
While we are all worried about expansion let us not forget how many critters have died from the 22lr.
@@stephenwest798 true. 😉👍🏻
If you look in the manual you will see the useful velocity is between 1175 and 18oo fps ,I won't give my load, but out of my 8inch Trooper I chrno about 1500fps.
I discovered your channel the other day i really enjoy your videos i'm always interested in Bullet Performance God bless from Frankfort Ky
@@terrybarnes0712 Thank you! You ever stop in at Gilbert’s Guns down there?? Used to be one of my special trips when looking for local reloading supplies. 😉
@@kentuckyrangetime I haven't stopped in Gilbert's in a while but yes I've been in there a few times I know years ago he used to be a real good gunsmith
Makee sense 357 bullets made for pistol velocity would turn inside out at rifle speeds
So light loads for 350 legend.
@@Hunter-vl6ft well, you do have nearly double the case capacity. 😉
Bump
Algorithm
The comp and backbore on the Taurus is probably the culprit for the low velocities. I bet if you measured just the rifled portion it'd be closer to 5 inches. It's not a true 6.5 inch gun.
@@1awrenceofarabia that makes perfect sense! I’ll check that when I get home. 😂👍🏻👊🏻
Compare it to a 6.5 inch Blackhawk???
I've noticed that the GP 100's velocities have been either really close or faster than the Taurus, maybe it has a faster barrel. I love the Flat points for wood and hunting. Sometimes Hollow points don't work on the bigger animals here in Maine.
@@joeltowle2737 Inwas discussing the velocities on another video too. Best guess, the ports in the last inch of the tracker may be decreasing its velocity. That’s a whole different set of test for later, maybe. Lol
@@kentuckyrangetime I forgot about the ports. When did they come out with a 5" GP100? That's definitely different.
@@joeltowle2737 not sure when it came out but I like it! 😉😂
Great comparison video 👍
Those are revolver barrels.
