  • Flimed on July 8, 2024. It's the start of another busy week harvesting, spraying, planting and selling vegetables on our Ohio farm. Sweet corn is one of our biggest crops and even after 35 years of growing it I'm still trying to figure out the best way to control bird damage in our fields. Have I finally discoverd the magic bullet? Tune in to find out my latest technique to keep these pesky avian at bay!

    Build scarecrows from yard sale or Goodwill clothes. Hanging aluminum, as they turn in the breeze, pie plates is another suggestion that works for me, here in the state of Delaware. In the early 70s, produce growers here would use scare cannons, these days those are considered antiques.

      I did that years ago and I attached radios to them to play talk shows all night, it works in a small area, but when you got acres, and acres of corn, it’s worthless. I never did buy any of the scare cannons, I was fortunate to have a neighbor and my son trap over 600 of them a few years ago so that really lowered the population.

    • @wishwellfarms

      Well, believe it or not the birds do more damage than the raccoons by far. A flock of birds can wipe out an acre in one day. Don’t get me wrong, raccoon can be bad too, but they’re usually isolated to hotspots in the fields. It also helps that my son and our neighbor trapped over 600 of them in the last three years but they’re making a comeback now.

    To get your balloons higher, you could drive the same stakes but then attach a long section of bamboo to those with 3 or 4 zip ties.

    Wow, after all that hard work to raise that beautiful sweet corn, bam, then the birds arrive. Had no idea birds did that much damage to sweet corn. Know about raccoons and deer and worms, birds are as troublesome or more trouble than the rest of the pest. My gosh you’re a hard working individual. You’ve been blessed my man with that kind of love for what you do to make a living. God bless. You.

    Get your balloons up as high as possible and long string so wind blows them around. Otherwise birds don’t care that they are there.

    Nothing like the sound of a pepper coming off the stalk. Thankfully I don't get too much avian pressure. The crows around me love pumpkin seedlings, so the ol' Marlin model 60 is pretty good at administering lead poisoning

    Hope the balloons help. They worked for me for about 3 days then the damage resumed. I see some blackbirds in mine but my assailants are mainly swarms of the small sparrow type birds that leave the exact damage you show. I did not have much luck with the avian spray either. I only have to protect about 500 ears at a time so I use paper lunch bags to cover the ears when they begin to ripen. They have been fully pollinated by then and I've sprayed them with spinosad before this so it does not impact them to be covered. Most of the time the birds then leave them alone but there are some that will peck through the bag into the corn. It's more work so they usually give up. Obviously not a solution for you. Frustrating how fast they ruin so many ears. Best of luck!

    • @wishwellfarms
      @wishwellfarms  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't have too high of hope for them to work, but after a rain they do seem to leave it alone more. Probably need some bird cannons or other sounds that play over a loud speaker that I've heard other large farms using.

      Nothing other than a little copper with the foliar feeding, we try to avoid conventional fungicides unless downy mildew gets out of control. In a few weeks will be in a new patch and will let that one go so it’s not too big of a concern.
