  • Triptyque from L'orgue mystique: Office No. 26 (In Festo SS Trinitatis) by Charles Tournemire, performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church. Recorded on Saturday 3rd April 2021.
Charles Tournemire was born in Bordeaux in 1870, but spent most of his life in Paris. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire with César Franck, and later became professor of chamber music there. He succeeded Gabriel Pierné as the organiste titulaire of Franck’s old church, the Basilica of St Clotilde, a post he held from 1898 until his death in 1939. His most famous musical output is L’orgue mystique, a colossal series of 51 liturgical suites of plainsong-inspired versets for all the Sunday and major feast day offices in the Catholic Old Rite liturgical calendar.
Triptyque is the Sortie from Office No. 35 for the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The first section quotes the Vespers office hymn 'Iam sol recedit', representing the majesty of the Father. The second section, representing the Son, starts around 1'45 and recedes a little more into the distance. After a build-up of a chord only Tournemire could have written, the mystical Holy Spirit speaks softly in monophonic strains, paraphrasing the antiphon 'Benedicta sit sancta Trinitas'. Described by Ralph Downes as 'a perfect musical sunset', the piece ends softly with a quote from the 'Te Deum' on a single flute stop.

Bravo à l'organiste. Celui ci va peut-être donner à la musique de Tournemire une interprétation plus inspirée, plus vivante avec un orgue qui convient mieux à Tournemire que les grands Cavaillé Coll ?
