What Makes Hungarian Tokaji Wine So Special?

  • Tokaji wine has a long tradition and is one of the most expensive wines in the world. In their works, historical greats such as Goethe, Schiller and Beethoven immortalized this special wine. Back in the day French King Louis XIV even called it, the “king of wines.”
But surprisingly, it doesn't come from one of the world's famous wine countries like Italy, France, or Spain, but from the Tokaji wine-growing region in northern Hungary. There, different methods are used to make the wine with different degrees of sweetness and quality levels from moldy white wine grapes. The Tokaji Aszú and Tokaji Eszencia varieties have been appreciated by wine connoisseurs for centuries as precious fine wines and classics of the wine world.

We LOVE Tokaji Aszu! The first time we tasted Tokaji was in a wine celler near Sátorjaújhely in 1991 and we tasted 3,4,5 and 6 puttonyos quality also!

When I see good Tokaji Aszus for sale in my area, I load up. Then the herd follows with barely anything left. 😁

Furmint can be grown elsewhere as well. Its outstanding acidity and mild fruity flavour are suitable for both sweet wines and barrel-aged dry wines.

The nutrients overrun the grape fields into the river for fermentation; 600 grams of sugar in one tablespoon.

HOW to avoid the fake products - A good Tokaji wine full with tastes is rather oily and has caramel colour. You can check it without opening the bottle.

because that is Marc (brandy) made of a botrytised wine - it has a special POPPEYSEED-like character. But that is a very niche product, a by-product of the wine production, more like an interesting drink. Also, very inexpensive so I wouldn't bother with a simplified comment like that.
