    Hey Tom....Great idea.
    Really enjoyed the quizzes.
    The only question I got wrong was the organic soil one.
    I pondered this question too long due to my insides shouting out,"How do you know its really organic soil especially if you are at a nursey?"
    I panicked....I knew you were going to pull the trigger on the answer so I got it wrong.
    I really enjoyed this.
    I have been listening to you,Alex,Richard,Kat,and of course Count Dracula....Petko for almost 2 years now but have not jumped into this hobby yet.
    But,very shortly.
    Made up my mind to start with 4 different types but can't decide which 4.
    I agree with the others,yes,to more quizzes.
    Good stuff.

      Hey, same here! I got my first tarantulas in January this year after watching and talking to a lot of other keepers for the past 3-4 years. It made everything so much easier, and I was comfortable enough in what I had learned to get some slings. They're all thriving and growing and I feel that it was a 100% worth it to be a quiet observer and just suck up all that info before getting my own. 🙏 All the best to you when you decide what you want to get!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! It sounds like you did great, Rebel! I included the organic one because I fell for that back in the day. I bought some "organic" dirt that smelled like poo and came infested with flies. haha And let's go! Time for you to jump in. ;) Seriously, I hope that you get your first T soon. Thank you!

    This was actually fun!
    A few in the first section tripped me up, but I did a lot better than I thought I would.
    The last one really had me uncertain and doubting myself. In a shocking twist however, the correct answers did manage to surface. My own self-doubt would have probably killed it had this been an actual test though. Lol
    I definitely appreciated this! It’s given me a good idea of where I’m at with the basics and just how much I’ve managed to retain from all my hyper-focused tarantula information consumption. Apparently I know more than I thought I did.

    That was brilliant Tom, really enjoyed it and it was fun,to say the least, anyway i got 2 wrong, the first one was the Urticating hairs in the true or false and the second one was no 32 in the multiple choice and the scenario question, no 33, the spider hadn't settled in especially if the spider was rehoused, I'd say that wasn't too bad considering im only in the hobby a few years, I'm looking forward to your opinion on how well you think i did, thanks for a really fun video Tom.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this and would want more. i got all questions right although one or 2 i had a brief think about because of how the questions where phrased. I can only keep a certain amount of T's due to having to move back in with my parents. So I have started trying to research on the more heavy scientific and behavioural side of spiders. Also started trying to illustrate them. I would be interested in way more nerdy and heavier topics and more advanced quizzes in the future. Keep up the good work.

      @@TomsBigSpiders Listened to the second one last night and the only thing i didn't know or got wrong i guess was about the Pelinobius muticus slings digging right to the bottom and not coming up and starving themselves. It makes sense that there would be other small prey items/animals that would burrow and live underground too. I just thought that if they where on the brink of death that a T would always be out and active. like with most my terrestrials and arboreals i can easily tell when there super hungry as i see them out and about being a lot more active.

    Hey, I nailed almost all of them (I only could think of 2 reasons for the G. porteri to stubbornly stay on the glass, didn't consider the possibility of a newly acquired spider) while working simultaneously! Funny thing is the hobby doesn't exist in the country I live in and I'm not planning on snatching a Grammostola vachoni, a Homoeomma uruguayense or something like that from the wild and then struggle to take care of it for lack of available resources. So I watch YT videos and learn about something I won't be able to do unless I move abroad. Ah, well, at least I'm learning the proper information

    I got 2 wrong on the T-F questions, the organic topsoil question and the misting. I thought this was great! On the last question, I lumped the substrate answer together, that the Tarantula doesn't like the feel of the substrate because it is too moist or too fluffy. My third answer was that the new pet Tarantula is a mature male, and the only thing he wants to do is get out and cruise for chicks. Unfortunately, there are sellers out there who will sell a mature male to a noob without them understanding that the Tarantula is nearing the end of its life. And yes, please, make this a regular feature.

    On that last question I got the first 2 possibilities fine, the last one of packing it down was eluding me and I was sitting here like “what’s a third possibility? ….I dunno, maybe the spider just ain’t hungry?” In hindsight packing down the substrate makes a lot more sense lol

      That one isn't one you would normally think of; I've just received a lot of emails and comments from new keepers who put in fluffy coco fiber. haha Most do NOT like it when it's all fluffy.

  • @fullonsociopath
    @fullonsociopath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah it's a G. porteri. What does it look like? Well it's light grey and black striped, with yellow stripes on the undersides of it's front legs. Really moody too. Lmao.
    I missed the light one. I personally have no lights shining on my t's, but I don't really like brightly lit rooms myself. One thing I will say, during rehousings, if I keep the new enclosure darker, with a towel or something wrapped around it the T seems to shoot in pretty quick, as opposed to having everything lit up. Just my opinion.

    That was a lotta fun! I just got into tarantula keeping 6 months ago and only got one question wrong (the one about organic topsoil) and my tarantulas all seem healthy and relaxed so I'm feeling pretty good about my husbandry. I do have a question though! What was that tarantula with the green legs and carapace that pictures kept coming up of during the quiz? I've never seen a truly green tarantula before and it was gorgeous!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      About the webs...true spiders use their webbing to actually capture their prey (almost like a sticky net). Tarantulas do not use it in that way. They will wrap it up after they have killed it, but they use it more as tripwire so that they can detect incoming prey. They also use it for molting. Not bad at all!

    But about organic substrate. I have to disagree friend. I often mix in little cowdung, say 10 % in the substrate for enclosures that i have live plants in. Eigher i collect dry cowdung in my area or buy soil with cowdung included. I never have had any problems with doing so. I am doubtful that it will create or atracked bacterias? I have tanks with such substrate set up for years. In the wild tarantulas in some areas are living in conjunction so cattles, like in the african savannahs. If springtails and isopods are inserted i think the tarantula, cleanup crew and "maybe bacterias"? Are living in an happy community?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought of you when I did this one! I had actually recorded it before we had our conversation. I think that the problem is that you know where your cow dung is coming from. Here, we get a generic label on bagged soil saying "animal dung" or "animal waste", and we don't know where it's coming from. Many will actually use chicken waste in their soils. I should definitely clarify that in the future. Thanks for chiming in; I was kind of hoping that you'd hear this one so that I could explain. haha

    • @klaskristian1
      @klaskristian1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomsBigSpiders Yes. I sometimes pick up dry cowdungs. It sounds narly maybe. But they dont smell anything. I use gloves and crumble them into the substrate. I notice that plants thrives. Yes i think it depends on the area. I live in Öland. Its a rural island in southeast Sweden with lots of plains where cows are living. If there where dangerous bacterias i dont think flies, dungbeetles and other critters would be able to live in them. I think chemicals addetives in soil is dangerous, but cowdung is not?

    Have you ever had a hamster, a mouse or other tarantula-sized animal living in a burrow? They ALL do the EXACT same thing with their water dish: they throw dirt and other stuff in and on it, and use it as a toilet (that's why hamster water bottles were invented). Since this behavior is so common in small laboratory rodents, it is not a mystery but thoroughly researched, and even used for certain drug tests... as a measure of anxiety! This behavior was found to be a fear reaction - in this case of open water, which totally makes sence for a terrestrial animal that's not the best swimmer and living in a burrow. And if this animal likes it clean, it will put all the stuff it is disgusted by (including its own poop) in the corner with the other disgusting stuff, e.g. open water. So, this behavior in tarantulas is most likely the so called "defensive burrowing" and fear-based.
    But why do they still drink from their water dish, isn't that a paradox? Well, it's just like arachnophobes collecting spiders - such contradicting behaviors will always remain a mystery to outstanders. ;)
