Absolutely brilliant job
Thank you for your coverage, I found a lot of the videos quite interesting. Your interviews were insightful and you asked challenging questions. If time allows, perhaps prepping the interviewees on the trickier questions you planned to ask would have yielded even better responses, since some people sounded as though they weren't sure what to say (the guy with the speakers for example). One thing I noticed was that a bit odd was how you followed up to some responses. You listened and gave a somewhat dismissive comment relating to their answer, and then quickly moved on to your next question. It seemed a bit awkward. I would find a specific example but given the amount of stuff you've released recently it would take a long time! Interviewing is hard, especially on a crowded floor when everyone's knackered, so good job overall!

@5:15 Filadry -> They are solving an issue which does not exist for PLA. PLA is thus the perfect example to scam a drier like this. PLA being in the water has been shown to have exactly 0 effect on printability. Tho their device might work, but they should be showing it off using Nylon which absorbs moisture like crazy.
Wrong. Some of my PLA becomes extremely brittle if I leave it out to the point where it will spontaneously break just before the extruder.
@@videblu That is a known issue with PLA that can not be explained via humidity alone
Also even if that was solely due to humidity of filament, we still wouldn't see it during the print process. They want to show you that their machine makes filament look like it was stored dry - so no bubbles, no stringing etc. - Good luck getting PLA to a point where you actually notice humidity, it won't be after two weeksin a fish tank
Seems like the Filadry is a gimmik, if you look at some testing of it, the filadry does absolutely nothing. Would think maybe running it through a Dehumidifying Bucket you can achieve better results.
@@michaelbiri6676 Calling it a gimmik is too kind, it's a scam. The guy is lying about the thing using "vacuum" and "chemical tricks". Another youtuber, Kuntry 3D, has done a teardown. It's some poorly glued together pieces of plastic, a pair of fans and a heater cartridge that achieves nothing except creating a huge fire hazard. They didn't even bother with basic overheat protection so at best it does nothing, at worst it produce a pile of burning plastic.
Most awkward handshake/fist bump attempt at the end there. Great stuff.

That string printer has potential! One motor and counterweights.. Very cool! I don't see why string can't be used more. Years ago I worked on a sawmill and the 40 foot bed was cable drive powered by a vw engine and eventually a 300 straight 6. I really look forward to building bigger and better things like many in this video.
I met a maker at san diego maker faire whose first 3D printer they built themselves out of a CD rom drive. It's incredible.

And still I don't get that. When I upload a 1080P video of 20 to 25 minutes, it's available in all resolutions in less than 3 minutes.
Maybe because I am Dutch and Google has an extreme server park in the Netherlands, but I never have to wait more than 3 minutes, really.

About that printer shown at 11:00 with the long unsupported arm on which the printer head moves in and out... a huge improvement would be to install a dynamic counter weight driven by the same cable that drives the head. That way it would not sag when the head is out at the end of the arm.

Thanks for the tip. I'm currently working on ways to improve it. It actually doesn't sag so much it the z axis as it vibrates in the x. I think a weight on the end would prevent these vibrations

I feel like it says alot about the quality of filadry that they choose to use PLA, a filament which absorbs very little water comparatively, instead of filaments which actually have issues with moisture like PETG and nylon. Yeah after a week im sure itd soak up enough water to affect the print quality, but it still makes me suspicious they wouldnt use the filaments that actually need drying. Ive left a PLA spool out for half a year and it printed fine. I left my spool of PETG out for a few hours and it was unusable.
There's been several dissection videos and it's a complete pile of trash. There's possibly an actual good product like it from thordsen 3d though just this month. I messaged kuntry 3d to take it apart like he did the filadry, hopefully they do.
Nothing is going to replace a tote dehydrator with bowdens sticking out from it.

Interesting string design. I tried spectra in a older reprap design. it works ok for a while then it starts to fray, and the frays would catch and cause layer shifts. I suppose since his mechanics are larger, the frays dont catch.
granted, only have a few hundred hours on the printer, no fraying. But also using fat, 1.2mm 8-strand, 300lb. test. The 80-90lb. I used for the counterweights stetted a bit more than hoped.
My favourite is the idig3D because its rediclously cheap with some modifications it could print amazing as proven by the Piper thingiverse project. Alloy extrusion is better and easier a lot more parts exisit like brackets and T nuts but the cost effectiveness and quality of a piper is a clear winner for me.

~ @4:15 the patents has been stiffling 3D printing from get-go. Home 3d printing was delayed by at least 10 years thanks to Stratasys having the patents and not allowing others to build 3d printers. Patents are the enemy of innovation.
I disagree that they are "the enemy" in general, as patents DO promote innovation when people know they will be guaranteed protections for their work when they bother to invent something - BUT the manner in which our CURRENT patent laws are set up are absolutely the enemy of both innovation and the public. For example, if you hold a patent but do nothing with it for a period of time, others should be able to use the patent by paying a reasonable royalty - you shouldn't be able to deny the market access at all costs. Also, if your patent covers something that has a "captive audience", like pharmaceuticals or medical equipment where people have no reasonable alternative or substitution, there should be a reasonable cap on your profit margin. Some reasonable limitations on patents would go a long way toward improving the market for both producers and consumers.

Cats Pajamas I agree with this. Patents, as a concept, support innovation because they force people to come up with new ways to make stuff work (ailerons are the classic example)l
Yeah, patents are just a way for big companies to prevent any new players entering an established market thus killing innovation and competition. It was controversial when introduced but now it's valuable to the powers that be, so it's hard to get rid of.

Does the Filadry have a consumable life span? If it uses a silica powder (according to comments on the FB page) does it lose it's effectiveness with use/time? I like so many want to see what it will do with a old roll of unprotected TPU or Nylon setting on the self for months and see how it does. One of the biggest issues I have is prepping the filament in a toaster oven...

When will we see your working review on the MMU
The Filadry thing looks interesting, but he really would need to be doing the demonstration with nylon to convince me it's really able to dry so quickly. Do they limit everybody in there to PLA only if doing demonstration prints? Let's say there is a silicone gasket the filament goes through, and a vacuum is being pulled - that has to be pretty noisy (never seen a quiet vacuum pump - even the hand held carrying type could wake the dead), and what chemistry trick could he be talking about? Anytime I hear chemistry I think consumable - does it have some kind of chemical you need to replace for instance? Maybe he could get you a review unit and you could try some nylon and polycarbonate - if it works that's so much easier than what we've all been doing so far trying to seal things up tight and then having to bake moisture out when it didn't stay dry over a long storage period.
Edit: Wait, 12V, 3A - and it has a heater. Can it really have the power to pull a vacuum too? I did rewind, and watch again - he definitely said vacuum right?
I'm pretty skeptical of the entire "vaccum" and "chemical" thing, too. As I understand, the "vacuum" part is a fan sucking air out of the enclosure faster than the heater blows it in. "Chemical" - no idea.
In the end, it's probably not more than a nicely packaged and presented low-power blowdryer.

Jacob R I did a rough BOM and my TowerBot parts cost under $400. Under $350 if you skip the Raspberry Pi running Octoprint with a camera.

Air conditioners set to cool can dry filament. I accidentally found that out after installing one in my office and resurrecting a few brittle 4-year-old ABS spools.
I have a idea for a 3D printer design, it’s mainly about my motors, and oddly enough the bigger the better. But also the “style” has never been done before, making it better than Cartisian and Delta, it’s design is closer to a delta but still sooo different. The most rigid design possible. And my motors give me speed and micron precision. Once I make this every one will want to clone it. But I want to be able to sell it as a kit. What should I do ?!
Some nice printers and ideas there, haha Microsoft 3D Builder is underestimated 😂 it's my go to besides tinkercad, I can't get to grips with the more advance CAD software either.
The Maestro also supports stealthchop, which to me is a huge advantage and an unfortunate omission from the Duet Wifi.

I hope somebody does a White Knight kit, and keeps it at 400x400x∞. I've sourced all the parts for printers before, and it usually will cost the same or more than a kit would (and obviously takes a lot more work finding/ordering/keeping track of it all). Plus - a kit manufacturer would be able to source the stuff like that extra large Buildtak sheet much easier.
Wish granted...... I've partnered with Printed Solid to produce a kit version of the White Knight. I'll be posting more info on my channel and twitter as it becomes available..

I am really liking the FilaDry. I even consider buying it. But is it worth the money? Does anyone know if it's really good? I usually print with pla and i've had some issues with bad filament and i also want to try nylons and petg on my ender 3. Do you think it's good for me? 12:38 Reminded me... Anyone have a lead on a GOOD Ramps board or seller? Been having a "fun" time finding boards (Ramps/Arduino) that last for more than 3-6 months. Bought a few from Ali that were DOA and most via Amazon have only lasted a year.... But my old (4-5 year old Ramps/Arduinos are still going strong.

stratyses (makerbot) has a patent on the conyeyor belt design to release parts after printing. Bill steel ( creator of belt printer idea and printrbelt) got around this by printing continually on the moving bed.

Is there any program for raspberry controlled 3d printer?.
I think the nearest is Klipper. Iit uses the RPi for the processing, but still uses a microcontroller to move the steppers.

Is there any advantage in printig 45°? I actualy see none.
The advantage is that you won't get sued by Stratasys - they own the patents to 90° on a belt thanks to Makerbot.

and the 45 degree angle is what gives you the ability to print a continuous print, otherwise you would be constricted to the size of your build platform. In theory as long as I support the print as it comes off the belt, my only length restrictions are the size of my room and the amount of filament I own...
