I was at Covent Garden for this performance. I have never seen a more emotional audience including me at the end . Everybody had tissues in their hands. When Ermonela came out to take her applause . She was still in the part . And found it difficult to walk along the stage .Puccini composed some operas with very sad endings. But even more than Butterfly, Mimi, Tosca, Manon and Liu. Angelica in this performance is the biggest tear jerker.
Absolutely wonderful performance by Ermonela. And know what; tomorrow I’ll see Il trittico premiere here in Barcelona - with Ermonela participating. A German production and I am so excited. Also saw it last season at the Swedish Royal Opera. Have a great day all party poopers and party lovers alike. Embrace life ❤
Saw the revival of this in 2016 with Ermonela at the ROH. Afterwards they were carrying people out of the auditorium and people here sobbing hysterically in the hallways.
I am so grateful for this post! I don't care what the production is like, honestly, since I am sitting here at my desk at work, listening to the audio. Ermonela Jaho sings the hell out of this, and tears are running down my face.
After people keep complaining about the ending I had a look at some other productions. This one is the best one by far in my opinion. I think not seeing what Suor Angelica is seeing adds another layer of complexity and tragedy, while not ruling out that what she is experiencing is real. Anything else would just look too cliche in this day and age. Some things are best left to the imagination, and Mother Mary taking her to heaven has got to be one of them. Ermonela Jaho is just amazing. What a voice.
One of the most moving scenes in all opera, Victoria de los Angeles being my favourite here. Better just listen to the music, directors often don't understand what it is all about.
The end doesn't revolve around faith; it centers on love! Motherly love.... Sour Angelica appears to be in a hallucinatory state during her last moments, confusing one of the hospital children for her own son. This illusion is driven by the love she feels for her son. I would argue that this is mirroring the essence of what the holy virgin represents. Meaning she is clearly present....
The beauty of this opera hinges on the fact that at the center of reality exists a God who has compassion on the brokenhearted. The attempts to secularize art are just as dead as the nihilistic worldview they emerge from.
Not badly sung but the production is ghastly. Take the final scene as a hallucination if you like but the audience should see what Angelica is seeing. With the ending here, the audience sees one thing but the music is saying something else altogether.
Always interesting how others are affected by the ending. Puccini’s open ended issues at the end are an enduring legacy for humanity to debate.. However in this production Thank god for the music, quality of orchestra and the voice bcs the staging of this ending was clinical, emotionally lukewarm, and nonsensical IMO. I’ll definitely come back to this recording but without viewing it. Fortunately this music binds us together and we are free to interpret the story from our personal perceptions which I think is the greatest attribute of verissimo opera
